Awesome report, love hearing about the ride, not just trail footage.

Did you find you were a little rear weighted? A little loose in the front wheel on climbs? Nice gear all around

Yep, this setup was too light on the front-end. In another iteration of this setup, I kept the rear rack and added Widefoot mounts on the front fork, which can hold quite a bit of bulky gear in a set of Sea to Summit Big River dry bags, or Revelate Designs Polecats. It's a much more balanced setup!

very nice vid. I noticed the seat post is very long are you using a size smaller than recommended? how many inches of the seat post are in?

Yep, lots of post there! It's a size Medium and I'm 5'11", so I bet I could go with a Large but in the last couple years it's all about the bike you can get. I generally like having a high seat (especially for those climbs) but also because it has left plenty of space when I use a saddle bag.

Thanks for the video. I'm somewhat a recent transplant from Washington state and the almost limitless gravel/bikepacking possibilities have been a huge surprise. Where was that closing shot pizza? That looks tasty after my next Brevard area ride.

Welcome to NC! There is a ton of riding - everyone in the video is from the Raleigh area, so feel free to reach out if you're nearby and would ever like to ride or do a trip.
The pizza is from PIE.ZAA Pizza in Asheville; it's basically my new tradition to stop on the way home and have a beer from Burial and a couple massive slices of pizza. Can't recommend either place enough!

Awesome video … is that the surly rear rack? Any problems fitting it ? Do you see any need to do the surly rear disc rack instead? I only ask because it looks like your setup works well.
    Thanks

Glad you liked it! That is indeed the Surly rear rack. It's a great setup, but I actually wouldn't recommend the rack. There's nothing "wrong" with it, but for the money I'd go with the Tumbleweed Mini pannier rack tumbleweed.cc/products/mini-pannier-rack. I know it's not always about weight, but the weight savings from the Surly rack (1,260g) to the Tumbleweed (560g) is considerable. I also love the setup of the Tumbleweed rack. I always felt like I needed a third hand to set up up the Surly rack, but the Tumbleweed rack is a breeze. If you check out my latest video you'll see that we're all using that rack, except for the one Tailfin setup.

Hi Jaime. At 5:06, there is a nice purple Krampus with interesting looking front and rear racks. Do you happen to know the brand and model? Also, I noticed afterward that you included the original route plan on Tide with GPS, which I very much appreciated. Thank you for sharing.

Hey there Dimitrios, that bike belongs to my buddy Rob. He loves it! The racks are the Blackburn World Touring racks. He's really enjoyed using them.
