In this video, we teardown the Ubiquiti UniFi USW-Leaf switch and see all of the cool technology that the company's first foray into primary data center switching and networking has to offer. The USW-Leaf offers 48x 25GbE ports and 6x 100GbE ports at $2,000 making it one of the most intriguing low-cost switches to date. The USW-Leaf has a new price equivalent to used Broadcom Tomahawk switches. We take the time to give some pointed feedback at what works and what does not work in Ubiquiti's first data center switch offering (excluding low-end 1/10GbE offerings.)

Unifi stuff would (hopefully) never make it into a data center, even EdgeOS would be a tall order. While they produce great gear, my whole house is Unifi and I always rave about it, it's in the SME/Prosumer space, Unifi for Small/remote offices/pro house setups. Then EdgeOS for WISPs, last mile, etc (thus the edge naming).
But yeah, the video editing shops is probably where this makes most sense, "we want fast with easy controller and affordable cost!"

Exactly. We're a small office. But we do a ton of simulation work, editing, CGI, 3D art, etc. We've moved everyone's omputers to a rack since they all WFH. A dual 25GbE card in each machine is c pretty cheap (£220 Nvidia Connectx-4). But then for new employees and especially freelancers on a server, and we can put up to 16 on a server if we need to stretch it, then in downtime we can just turn that same server into a rendering machine, and that's connected by dual 100GbE. Speaking of which we also connect several smaller rendering machines via dual 25GbE.
It will help users connect to our traditional TrueNas servers with spinning rust and edit 4K directly. But of course that won't saturate two 25GbE links.
They main reason is so we can build an all flash ultra high speed storage server in the future. With customers requesting things like 8K or even 12K+ footage (for virtual display led grid walls used in the background of scenes). Having the ability to have a high speed flash server use those two 100GbE links is crucial.
I think this is what these are designed for. Not for data centres...

We keep seeing Ubiquity releasing new products and they are incomplete and major features are not working and it usually takes six months to a year for Ubiquity to get them fixed. We typically won't touch new products from them for 12 - 18 months because we cannot afford to be their beta testers. The problem is by then a lot of their products are EOL and ubiquity is on to something new. Not enterprise-grade or mature enough for a high-value DC.

I find it very unfortunate that they mount capxon capacitors in a switch of this type, if nippon chemicon can be mounted, that switch would be the best that has ever been manufactured.
In characteristics it is very good, but wanting to save a few dollars in capacitors makes its reliability lower than that of a higher priced Switch with Japanese capacitors.
Because of these cost savings, it causes network systems to have high failure rates ...
I've seen modems, routers, switches, etc ... break because the capacitors explode.

If you have issues with the design and or performance of this early access product, it would probably be best to share those opinions with Ubiquiti directly in hopes of improving the item before it is released, rather than steering consumers away from what very well could be the best budget switch for its class, once it is officially made available to the very audience you are addressing.

I mean for $2000 this isn’t bad, but for around that money you could get some S-series Dell switches that are much nicer and more mature from a refurb outfit (albeit for 10/40Gb not 25/100). As somebody said this is really meant for a onsite deployment for people who want 25Gb ports that won’t necessarily want stuff that you typically see in a data center switch like VLT/VPC. This is basically an office aggregate switch for L2 stuff, which it will sell great I assume considering Unifi’s already great offerings for SMB.
As for the troubles with discovery, you need to set the inform address in the CLI if you aren’t in the same network as the controller. I also chalk it up to alpha/early release stuff. I’m actually really excited for this. I wouldn’t put it in the middle of a vSphere cluster or at the core of my network, but for an office aggregate switch that connects a bunch other access layer switching it may be a good pick.

This is in the Unifi line, therefore its for workgroup / campus environments. You would be a lunatic to use this in a DC environment, and that's obvious from the outset. This is exactly the sort of switch I'd use in the main comms room to aggregate fibre links out to other Unifi switches within a large office or a campus. I'd expect this to be used as a distribution switch in University / Education or high bandwidth corporate networks (maybe media companies?). I see 4-pin fan assemblies, and I wonder if Noctua or any other so-called "Silent" fans are compatible with that configuration, specifically the form factor (aka fan size height/width/depth and screw receptacle)? For context, I usually replace any fan for any product with something "Silent" while staying in accordance with thermal envelope. I'm operating a home lab in a dedicated media closet attached to home theater, so silence is important, but not so important to risk poor thermals. I'm very interested in this switch, because the rest of my home network core is currently all 10BASE-T, but that's kinda slow. If my math is correct, 25GBe is about ~ 2980 MiB/s using the math: `(25 * 10^9) / 2^20 / 8`. So that's about enough to saturate a single m.2 PCIe-v3 NVMe storage stick on my various lab systems, and possibly even a Synology NAS with read/write cache enabled. My only gripe here is wishing for something smaller ~24 port instead. But at this price I feel like this is already a huge discount, other vendors sell a fabric like this in the 5 digit range. So I'm not complaining, I guess just pointing out that I'm in Ubiquiti's market segment of smaller customer looking for the Apple of networking kits, because my family sometimes needs to login and fiddle with the network.

Ubiquiti are doing some really strange shit atm. They have this high speed segment but no proper thought put into it.
They have the low cost segment with features that ruins the performance.
They have a low cost segment with fewer gui features but no AP's to go with it.
They keep on wanting you to use their Unifi system but they never put enough thought into the Unifi system for it to be a good and solid thing to switch to.
If you need 10 or 100Gb networking, you either want to go the cheap way or the expensive DC way.
There just are not a lot of usecases where prosumers or small bussinesses needs or wants 100Gb networking and if they do, they tend to run critical services over that network. If they have critical systems running they know that they need a very short downtime if anything would happen to both the main and the failover path.
This switch doesnt tick any of the boxes for the high speed, reliability and service time requirements for critical deployment areas.
And with the lacking software set im not sure id even consider them in this segment. Id rather go with an EOL Cisco set tbh.

Instead it's targeted to small and medium businesses with high speed networking needs (Linus Tech Tips being the first example that came to my mind), where they want to try out the cool stuff but don't want to pay the premium to do it properly and is willing accept some downtime as a result of that.

The caged power supplies are a clear sign this thing was "designed from a catalog", as we like to say. Zip ties for cable management will help you much? You will need to carefully strip them without stripping cables, which is harder than removing sticky tape, so why it's better?

I had high high hopes for Chris Buechler joining Ubiquiti and being put in charge of the UniFi team, but sadly it seems in hindsight that is when they started going downhill. I don't know how we ended up here, but things they promised years ago are still incomplete, buggy, or entirely missing. Simple stuff that beggars belief that they did not consider and still haven't remedied like total lack of any ability to setup a redundant switch stack without a huge, fat single point of failure at the router. I have invested tens of thousands of dollars into UniFi gear at my workplace, and I'm increasingly looking like a fool. I've had multiple occasions now where all LAN-to-LAN traffic has completely died (traffic between two devices on the same LAN and switch, and internet access unaffected though), at the switch boundaries for no explicable reason, no trace to find in any log. Just dead until all the switches are power cycled. If it happens again, I don't know who's going to rip the entire stack out of the rack quickest, me or my CTO. I've used UniFi wireless at home for years without many unsolvable issues... my mistake was trusting it for routing and switching at work.
