Back sometime in the 90s I went on vacation to Nassau. I could never forget this song because it played constantly everywhere I went there. Restaurant, cabs, in the streets. Awesome to find it again finally! It never left my mind. As a dog lover I guess it affected me.
This has been a personal favorite since the mid-1990s. Such a great song and fantastic lyrics. I first heard this when traveling to Cat Island via Mail Boat; we landed and cassette tapes were on sale, so I thought I’d try one. Having lived on Andros, Potcakes are dear to me; they are loyal and just want love. They can eat crabs and find water just fine.
This is amazing. All my dogs my whole life. I loved all of them. But a special place in my ❤ for Waylon, my beloved Potcake. Rest easy my friend. It will be better next time
My husbnd and I adopted a Potcake a couple of years ago from Marsh Harbour and he "Nipper" is the most spoiled dog I know. I wish more people could be informed as to how wonderful and loving these dogs are. We visit the Bahamas regularly and have seen these dogs but never knew of their plight. As a huge fan of Phil Stubbs, I only found out about this song when we were in Lucuya and heard it on the radio, I thought Bone Fish Folley was my favorite song until this. Pat Bounds. Fort Pierce, Florida
Best thing I've done - adopted a pup from Eleuthera. He is sweet, loving, gentle and extremely well behaved. Kelo will turn 1 next week and the past 9 months have been filled with tons of smiles and laughs.
went to turks and caicos this summer to find "lil bear" is a potcake.... he is a very sincere and brilliant doggie at 2 years and rarely does anything to piss me off other than greeting me at the door wth jumping and running circles under my feet... i
Great dog! Mine's a tad hyper and bit obnoxious but if I get mad she acts so sad. She was the alpha of her pack XD which explains so much. Stubborness!
Back in the day a pot cake was a little brown dog. When GPS was invented it put an end to the tranquility of the Islands. GPS gave us people who "drive" sailboats.
Lord I weak day not talking but the dog only a real Bahamian will understand kml...........my kids 14 and 17 year old daughters came in my room 6:00 this morning Kissing me smiling I love you mommy
i can't speak highly enuf of the potcake:D being a resident of one of the family islands, they have earned a great deal of respect from me. potcakes are highly resilient. unlike those pure breed dogs that seem to get sick if you so much as sneeze on them or give them table scraps. potcakes are REAL dogs. had one that got his head cracked open and he still lived (that's WITHOUT medical attention). for 14 years i might add, his life got cut short by a drunk driver however:(
Listen carefully: Though "Cry of the Potcake" is, on its face, about the plight of the national dog of the Bahamas, that is but one and, depending on your point of view, merely an ostensible meaning of the song. To my mind it has always been about politicians only remembering the voters at election time. Truly apropos with the mean season of politics bearing down on us here in The Bahamas, and very shortly in the USA. Best of luck to us all... VOTE EARLY AND OFTEN!!
Love my potcake their smart like hell and act like humans. my dog was seeing this dog whom she never lets us see her with she sneaks him in at nights an runs him in the morning. we would be in the yard her man in the road, no lie he makes to come in the yard and she just gave him one look and he curled his tale and left couldn't believe it. she was like a teenager being sneaky playing the good female untel driving home one day they got stuck doing it when she saw us passing she just bent her head in shame no lie lol. love my pebells r.i.p sweets
i just adopted a potcake :) She is very shy, and shows signs of aggression towards strangers, but we are trying to work with her. Anyone have any tips they could give me about potcake aggression?
