    Yikes! Those are some expensive borders on that print! I'm a big fan of the glass rod technique for applying sensitizer - makes for a print area much closer to the size of the negative, so you can use less of the hideously expensive chemicals.

    Great video Mat. I saw Roger on SFLAB mention you guys doing this exchange so look forward to seeing how it pans out.
    The Platinum/ Palladium process is one I have wanted to try for a long time but the cost of it is the down side. Watching this video and seeing the results just adds more inspiration for me to get on and do it, so well done. I'm sure Azriel will love it.

      Thank you Steve! Roger's video was great and now I need to catch up on the rest of the folks' videos to see all these prints. Real excited about being a part of this exchange. Understandable about the cost of Pt/Pd. The price barrier is a shame and I intend to explore some more alt processes that are similar and share them on the channel.

    I started doing Platinum Palladium prints last year, and I really love it. In fact, I haven’t used my standard darkroom at all since I started. I wish it was a little cheaper, but to get around that, I started making Kallitypes and toning them in either platinum or palladium (or gold), and it’s saved me a little money. Really love printing this way!! Thanks for the video, I always enjoy them!

    Mat, you were commenting on the expenses of platinum / palladium printing but how does it compare to the price of photographic quality inkjet printing?

    • @MatMarrash
      @MatMarrash  3 роки тому +1

      This is a tough question to nail down since both are prints, but that's where the comparison ends. Inkjet prints have a wide range of prices, but even at the high end are still less expensive than Pt/Pd. So many considerations like peripheral technology required for each process, so I'll sum it up with Pt/Pd is pricier every day of the week; inkjet isn't exactly cheap, and also isn't as archival.

    • @BobOgden1
      @BobOgden1 3 роки тому +1

      @@MatMarrash perhaps the important consideration is more like value for money which, given the archival properties, is clearly Pt/Pd

    Worth whatever I have signed up for already! This is so cool. Not going to do it in my closet though! I just got a Kodak contact print frame and set of those lights. Just one pack of 4. Will that just make 4x5 contact print exposures longer? Keep going on the Alt process. Any other UV processes? So glad you are out doing this. Getting inspired!

    • @MatMarrash
      @MatMarrash  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for signing up Peter and very cool to hear you've got the alt process setup going! 4 UV LED tubes positioned < 6" from the contact print frame should give similar exposure times. If I rebuilt my exposure unit, I would do so with a little less space from the bulbs to the print frame. We're just scratching the alt process surface, and throughout the channel I plan on showcasing some that I've practiced and a whole bunch that I haven't.

  • @alanhuntley55
    @alanhuntley55 3 роки тому +1

    Nice intro to the pt/pd process, Mat. Have you checked the price of palladium nowadays? Not so cheap anymore; almost the same cost as platinum! I still love the process, though. One trick I use when mixing FO from powder is to put the bottle in the pocket of my pants and walk around with it for a day (after it cools a bit, of course.) I think the jostling and the heat from my body helps it go into solution better. I still don't use it for a day or two, though, to ensure it's mixed thoroughly.

    • @MatMarrash
      @MatMarrash  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the comment Alan, and yeah it's pretty amazing how close the price of the two metals has come over the years. In studying up for this video, there were a few folks mentioning carrying it around in their pockets. There was also one about short 5 sec. pulses in the microwave, but it was strongly cautioned against. Naturally I went with the microwave trick then kept the bottle in my pocket until filming started. Cheers!

  • @geogi_bodies
    @geogi_bodies 2 роки тому +1

    It's absolutely brilliant! Will definitely give it a go one day. It seems there is no way to dodge and burn like making a silver gelatin print. Does that mean the negative has to be pretty much perfect in order to make a good Pt/Pd print?

    • @MatMarrash
      @MatMarrash  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the comment Geogi! I've never tried dodging and burning with a contact print process but it's probably very difficult to do. This need for a very precise negative is why many will make digital negatives (with inkjet printers) with finely tuned curves.

    Matt does is it posible make this process in a high gloss paper?

    • @MatMarrash
      @MatMarrash  3 роки тому +1

      This is a great question. I've never seen anything with a higher gloss than a super flat, hot press bright paper. Back when commercial papers were available, there were some made on a Baryta (like Ilford FB glossy) papers. I think the problem with DIY coating a glossy paper is the ability to flow the sensitizer evenly. Even on a forgiving paper like the Platinum Rag I was using, sloppy brush strokes are punished in areas of even tonality on the print.

    Hey Matt,
    Are you making any conscious choices when both exposing and developing your negatives with alt-process contact printing in mind..?

    • @MatMarrash
      @MatMarrash  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the question Matthew. One of my "cheats" in developing my negatives is using a staining devleoper, namely Pyrocat HD, whose amber/brown stain has additional masking for UV processes. One of the better "dual purpose" developers out there, but man there are some downsides to using it. Hoping to make an episode down the road about developers for LF, only problem is I haven't used many of them!
