    Yes, we need an entire episode on splt dark slides, their creation (DIY), who makes them commercially (Chamonix), known challenges to using one, advantages and disadvantages over the alternative methods of roll film back or just cropping a full sheet in post. I've made my own for 4x5 (6x12) , 5x7 (6x17) and 8x10 (4x10) and they are fun to work with and handy for one-off shots while out making work on full sheets primarily.

    This mask slide is fancy but it waste a lot of precious emulsion... I use a slide I cuted to take two 2,5x5 panoramic on a 4x5 sheet (minus 1mm between the two frames). It's a classical way of doing it... Of course you have to be organized not to do accidental double exposure but it works perfectly. And to use the sharpest part of your image circle you just have to shift a little...that's what a LF camera is made for...
    Congrats for the 15k and greetings from France...

    Congrats on 15k! I hope another year from now 15k feels like peanuts, your channel is great and I'm sure it will keep growing!
    That Intrepid 8x10 Mk III looks sexy. I've been shooting their 4x5s since the Mk II, currently using a Mk IV and was VERY intrigued with the Mk V announcement. Seems like some really significant quality of life improvements in that model.
    Many times I have toyed with the idea of getting an 8x10, and if I do it would definitely be the Intrepid. Alt process contact prints from that bad boy would be so much fun.

    May I tell you why I am into analogue photography? because it is not perfect und the unperfectness is a part of the charme and gives me the apologies for all the little flaws. Just everything I see at your channel is perfect and a masterpiece 🙃. maybe you could share from time to time something not perfect? things, that didn´t go completly right. photos witch you like despite little flaws?

    When I saw that split dark slide, I immediately thought, "what a waste." It seems absolutely worth the upfront cost of making a twin set of split dark slides; one for the upper portion of the film sheet, then swap out the one for other and take a second exposure of the same or a different composition exposed on the bottom portion of the dark slide. Is there a practical reason why that cannot work? I think a 4x5 film renders an image at 95 x 120mm. So a true 6x17cm (60x170mm) will not work. But you can still get two of the same aspect ratios on one sheet of film, no? Something like 42x119mm ~ 2.833333

    Wow looks like you are set with a ton of videos ideas 🙂 The contact print with the full smile looks great. If you don’t frame and display that one, not many LF shots deserve to be on walls. Don’t overthink the vanity aspect of it; promoting LF is also showing these wonderful prints. I am surprised your significant other didn’t get it on a wall already 🙂

    What are the dimensions of that cutout for the dark slide? I assume aspect ratio is same as 6x17. I have a da-yi 6x12 back, a 6x17 would be sweet. And yes! Let’s get an episode about it

    this is the second reference to a new version of the Intrepid 8x10 I have seen but still nothing on their web site no mention of new features (i am guessing more like my black edition 4x5 but with wood standards) it would be great if you could do a quick first impression of it. An in depth could follow later

      I may do a YT short about the camera, it has some important new features, most notably being the fresnel on the back, some detents for movements on the front and rear standard, and light seals where the lens mounts.

    Speaking of alternative process, happy World Cyanotype Day! And a small question that maybe you've covered in a video; are there any kits/chemicals you'd suggest for a C41 newbie? The leaves are changing here in Northern Wisconsin and I'm missing color film, but I'm worried about environmental impact/disposal/startup cost. Any advice welcome. Enjoy that new intrepid!

    I have a question or should I say a request. Over the last year year and a half I have bought 2 Japanese whole plate and half plate cameras. Neither one of them actually have a makers name so they're just sort of the generics that you buy. In trying to find any information on UA-cam about Japanese plate cameras there is absolutely nothing. Would you mind doing a video on the history of those and just in whole plate and half plate cameras in general. They are the kind that use the book style holders.

    • @MatMarrash
      @MatMarrash  Рік тому

      Hi and thanks for your comment. That's an interesting topic suggestion, and if I had access to any Japanese plate-style cameras it might be worth looking into some more. The only downside of working in technology as old LF is that it spans much of the history of photography itself. In those ~3 lifetimes, many cameras and designs have come and gone.

    Why wouldn't he make it flippable, so you can shoot two pano frames on one 4x5.

    • @MatMarrash
      @MatMarrash  Рік тому

      I've seen several designs of split darkslides, many of which make room for the flip. I will say the extra "meat" left on the slide does make it slightly less likely to bend.
