Yall wanna know something ironic? I recently did my final English project for the college semester, and I did mine on why video game adaptations perform better in TV and in film, and one of my reasoning was familiarity. And I used this movie as an example. I cannot describe my satisfaction rn. Its like schadenfreude.
37:55 to be fair, that is how the big bad of borderlands 1 went down as well. Commandant Steele had little to no presence throughout the entire game and then just gets impaled by the Destroyer and that was it.
I can't understand why they made up the Atlas character when he is by all means basically Handsome Jack, his role and story is basically Jack's story but for some reason they decided to write off probably the most iconic character on the franchise 😅
My guess is that Gearbox didn't let them use him? Maybe because they knew he's one of the most iconic characters from the games and that this movie might ruin his reputation or something?
Only reason I ever visit imdb is to check cast lists. Like if I'm watching a movie and see someone and think "that looks like the dude out of [blank]. I'll check." And it's mainly for that reason I don't bother with anything else. Good on you for scrapping it.
25:50 is probably a refernece to "Face McShooty" from Borderlands 2. the thing that actually disappointed me the most, was the lack of guns. Borderlands has so, so many iconic weapons and only 1 was in the movie (infinity from lilith).
This is how I also feel about about live action Disney movies. It feels like the ppl making them just heard about the cartoon version and thought "that would be great to be live"
Disney is the ones who made it so your comparison doesn't really work. They're just remaking their own work, which themselves are largely just adaptations of books and stories. You can't really call out the live action movies for not following the animated movies when the animated movies barely follow the stories they're adapting.
i hate that so many video game movies HAVE to be PG-13, even though the games themselves have heavy lore, or simply a lot of gore. Do directors know video games are not only for little kids, and can have huge adult fanbases
Movie also influenced by executives and sponsors decision, they think R rating would not sell -andtheyhategamers- I don't know much story behind Deadpool, but I heard everyone involved have to work hard to convince higher ups that Deadpool need to be R
There's still a very strong, incomprehensible belief within hollywood executives that all videogames are played by children, and therefore, the movies need to be accessible for them.
Weirdly I feel the same about the fnaf movie. I really wish it was a horror film and that the animatronics looked more gore-y and broken down. I also was excited to see spring-trap, but since William was still alive in the movie I knew that wasn't the direction the movie was going to go in 😒.
@@blueismylove3128 omg yes, FNAF is what I was referencing with the "heavy lore" part of my comment. I wished it was an R rated movie. They couldve done such a great job with the springlock scene, and the animatronics attacking the main character. But no no, the game about horrible deaths and insane lore is for kids
@@markimlem I feel like it could have been an AMAZING crime thriller with all the lore even if they'd have to dumb it down a bit. Sorry for any errors, I'm using speech to text.
Calling it a movie is probably the best compliment you can give. Its more like a childs story they make up in their head when they are playing with borderlands action figures.
Isn't that what the games tbh , and they aren't exactly pieces of high art , pretty much all u do in the game is a fetch quest / fetch quest with extra steps so guess they got that right in the movie.
look i dont expect people who dont play games to sit down and play an entire game or seires, but god damn theres youtube videos of just cut scenes, theres videos of character break downs, they didnt have to play the game to know the character and what people liked about them, theres just a rule in hollywood that if you adapt something the less you know about the source the better for some reason

Came here to say this! Tbh it would kinda fit - he's writing a screenplay for Best Served Cold, so maybe his agent got him on the writing team or something to get a feel for film work. If true, I can't imagine much of his material has made it into the final edit, given how good he generally is at dark humour.
Me and buddies all said the same thing. Terry Crews is no stranger to serious roles, which, Roland is. In fact Roland is like the one serious guy in borderlands.
Look, man, the editor easily steals the show in this video. As someone that does editing as well, the personality OOZES, and it makes me happy to see that. FanEPack, if you're reading this, you did an amazing job!
Benjamin Byron Davis is such a great and versatile actor to me because he can do super distinctive, definitive roles like Dutch in the Red Dead games while still pulling off smaller roles in shit like this or Guardians of the Galaxy. Unfortunate that he doesn’t get more substantial roles in more stuff.
As a hardcore borderlands fan who grew up playing the games, this film just felt like a punch in the face. Honestly kreig was probably good thing that I enjoyed because he was perfectly casted and I myself am a huge fan of him, it's just I wish they didn't make him into some sort of pet for Tina when he himself is one of the most in depth and interesting characters in the series. Overall, like a day after I saw the film I completely forgot about it and went on with my life which sucks because I was so hyped when it first got announced :
Eddings, the original clap trap voice, has ill feelings towards Randy due to doing the voice for free and after it became a big hit he offered to voice the third game for free if he could get a cut of bl2 profits and was fired. So he has openly said he has no interest in returning to that character ever
These directors and actors need to accept one thing: NOBODY is looking for them to be cranial and “experimental” with known content. The fans want the same stuff that made them fans. They need to stop treating popular IPs like they’re their personal brainchildren because all they did was snatch up an already established piece of amazing material in order to leech off the fanbase. If you want to make something “fresh and new and creative” then CREATE something new.
The dropship having a lot of empty space and the mom like "nope, its your problem now. Not like his dad is rhe most powerfull individual on the planet with the biggest army and the most resources. Just take your cinema trope"
Marvel fans: "We want VENOM to be R-Rated." Avi Arad: "VENOM will be PG-13, so everyone can bring their children to watch it. It will be fun for the whole family." Me: "þussy"
At least Venom and Eddie got into some gay shenanigans. So that's a win for me. But seriously, I think they're being PG-13 to hopefully widen the audience. Kids go shit over hero movies after all.
@rillwyacandelario7449 it's not a bad idea... depending on the original material. Toning down Venom meant also toning down Carnage... and if you're not using Venom and Carnage as more brutal reflections of Spider-man... then you might as well be making a Spider-man universe without Spider-man. The Deadpool movies are a textbook example of not watering down what made something originally appealing in an ironic bid to try and make it more appealing.
a borderlands movie SHOULD be really good, youve got all you need for a movie, characters with predefined motives (loot), and actual character. A VERY BASIC plot that can be expanded upon in so many different and fun ways, and a universe thats super flashy and basically made for cinema with 4 people being able to take out literal HORDES of enemies and a giant basically godlike enemy. it lends to a movie so fucking well
As much as I disliked it, I’m just glad I was able to pick apart “Oh hey, that’s from that game” or “They mentioned that?”. (I’m just at least happy that they didn’t tamper with Kreig.)
"What's in the box" myst be a reference to the unique weapon called "The Gwen's Head" that can be found in boxes in The Dust in BL2 which has flavor text that says "Whats in the box?" In reference to the movie Se7en.
The director of Silent Hill had his crew watch him play the games. The movie was what ever, but he got the atmosphere down 100%. It was probably one of my favorite videogame adaptations. Aside from the live action super mario movie.
It definitely did some neat stuff but it's also where a lot of the worst aspects of the franchise shine brightest like being forced to wait around and listen to really terrible jokes for WAY too long
Funnily enough, the way Atlas dies is basically just the way Commander Steele dies in the 1st game, she just shows up at the end to be revealed as a big bad, then gets impaled by the vault monster and dies instantly. And i remember other reviewers who are more familiar with Borderlands, say that the Infinity pistol Lilith has, is the only gun in the entire movie that you see reloaded onscreen... the one gun that never needs to be reloaded (I havent watched the movie, so i cant confirm this, i just heard it in other reviews)
If you think it's a good idea for the actors to have played the video game. I've got two words for you: Henry Cavill. He knew what the showrunners were trying to do the Witcher wasn't right and he lost his job for his troubles.
@AC-hj9tv no they can't. He stood up for what he believed in and got fired for it. Granted it's not the same for him as it would be for you or me. But he still got fired. Was he right? I recently did my final English project for the college semester, and I did mine on why video game adaptations perform better in TV and in film, and one of my reasoning was familiarity. And I used this movie as an example. I cannot describe my satisfaction rn. Its like schadenfreude.
Wow interesting
37:55 to be fair, that is how the big bad of borderlands 1 went down as well. Commandant Steele had little to no presence throughout the entire game and then just gets impaled by the Destroyer and that was it.
I can't understand why they made up the Atlas character when he is by all means basically Handsome Jack, his role and story is basically Jack's story but for some reason they decided to write off probably the most iconic character on the franchise 😅
My guess is that Gearbox didn't let them use him? Maybe because they knew he's one of the most iconic characters from the games and that this movie might ruin his reputation or something?
@@Noxbandit0shouldn’t have called the movie “Borderlands” if they didn’t want the IP destroyed
I guess they couldn’t afford Dameon Clarke
Only reason I ever visit imdb is to check cast lists. Like if I'm watching a movie and see someone and think "that looks like the dude out of [blank]. I'll check."
And it's mainly for that reason I don't bother with anything else. Good on you for scrapping it.
Those casting choices....fuck me.
@@SK-mw8vd but but the masses want ancient wamen 😂
They should have all been Chris Pratt
They could have saved so much money casting smaller actors that fit the roles
*looks at Jamie Lee Curtis's outfit in this* yeah me too please
@@glassofwater281exactly, younger up and comers. And couldve literally used the claptrap va from the games instead of paying jack black money smh
"Tina, you go right. Roland you go left. And CL4P-TP you just be CL4P-TP. Alright team, We ARE the Borderlands!"

i hate that so many video game movies HAVE to be PG-13, even though the games themselves have heavy lore, or simply a lot of gore.
That's the type of FNAF movie I wanna see, but no, we got a kid's movie, which itself was fine for what it was trying to be, I guess. It could have been great tho😔.
Sorry for any errors, I'm using speech to text.
“Respects the characters and the themes” 💀
I’m genuinely curious how he said that with a straight face
- Weird alien clone Tina
- Krieg was Tina's pet
- Tannis was like 80
Calling it a movie is probably the best compliment you can give. Its more like a childs story they make up in their head when they are playing with borderlands action figures.
Isn't that what the games tbh , and they aren't exactly pieces of high art , pretty much all u do in the game is a fetch quest / fetch quest with extra steps so guess they got that right in the movie.
@@ak-ub1ymIMO even with most of the quests being fetch types, the humor, story and settings do a pretty good job making up for it (mostly in B2)
It's always a good sign when Elvis takes half the video just talking about surrounding controversy before even getting to the movies story. XD
look i dont expect people who dont play games to sit down and play an entire game or seires,
but god damn theres youtube videos of just cut scenes,
theres videos of character break downs,
they didnt have to play the game to know the character and what people liked about them, theres just a rule in hollywood that if you adapt something the less you know about the source the better for some reason
YES
I still love I got recommended a clean dvd rip of this movie on UA-cam out of the blue a couple days after it released in theaters and it stayed up for at least THREE DAYS. Of course I watched it. Of course I agree with this review.
“Let the movie entertain you” sir I would rather garble marbles
Joe Abercrombie is an OUTSTANDING gritty fantasy writer, so I assume it's not him lol
Came here to say this! Tbh it would kinda fit - he's writing a screenplay for Best Served Cold, so maybe his agent got him on the writing team or something to get a feel for film work. If true, I can't imagine much of his material has made it into the final edit, given how good he generally is at dark humour.
Idris Elba would've been a perfect cast for Roland imo, with a bit of makeup he could be made to look younger
Also too old
Kevin Hart's so small I can't even see him
@@davidkymdell452 I don't think making Roland and Lilith basically the same age would've been a terrible idea actually
i heard terry crews' name floated back when it was just trailers, that coulda been great
Not that age seemed to be a concern at all
Arguably the funniest part about this Movie was when Randy Pitchford said this Movie would launch a Borderlands Cinematic Universe lol.
14:49 editor put in that REAL work 🤘
I actually like Pre Sequel, the zero gravity was a fun gimmick to the shooting, and I like more depth to Handsome Jack backstory
My theory is that Liliths gun ran out of batery and everyone forgot that its supposed to spin.
I think the scenes where it doesn't spin are part of the reshoots
Literally no one had hope for the borderlands movie, it's not baffling that it failed
Terry Crews would kill it as Roland.
Id rather see him as Mr. Torque, and Idris Elba as Roland. Crews has the oerfect energy dor Mr. Torque
Me and buddies all said the same thing. Terry Crews is no stranger to serious roles, which, Roland is.
In fact Roland is like the one serious guy in borderlands.
That would actually slap, not Tiny Tim
I think Mike Colter (from the Netflix _Luke Cage_ series) would have been a better choice.
Hell yeah he would have!!!
how come nobody on set just once was like "hey, this is insanely dumb, why are we doing this"
Rhys is my favorite Borderlands character. I'm so glad you mentioned him ❤️ Tales is wildly underrated.
I think he's going to be in Creature Commandos as Rupert Thorne.
Theres a non zero chance the Joe Crombie is ChatGPT
they did my favourite game dirty ya'll
Bro I feel you.
theyve been shitting on this franchise ever since bl3, its like no one at gearbox actually cares about borderlands anymore
Tiny Tina's wonderlands did it for me, still never gone back to get the plat
Borderlands being ur favorite game is already dirty enough
You kinda deserve this garbage fire if BorderLands is your favourite game
This movie is a bigger bomb than any explosive Tiny Tina made.
I love Borderlands, this made me so sad
“Turn off your brain” is Hollywood for “brain dead”
As a hardcore borderlands fan who grew up playing the games, this film just felt like a punch in the face. Honestly kreig was probably good thing that I enjoyed because he was perfectly casted and I myself am a huge fan of him, it's just I wish they didn't make him into some sort of pet for Tina when he himself is one of the most in depth and interesting characters in the series. Overall, like a day after I saw the film I completely forgot about it and went on with my life which sucks because I was so hyped when it first got announced :
You know what woulda been interesting?
A movie where handsome Jack successfully took over Rhys’s mind and had the full power of atlas.
the guy who plays marcus in the movie is also Dutch from RDR2
I feel so bad because Benjamin Byron-Davis is so good, he deserves better
Dutchhhh
I have a plan Aurthur
He was also Dutch in RDR 1.
Calling the pre sequel bad is absurd, imo they have the best vault hunters
Eddings, the original clap trap voice, has ill feelings towards Randy due to doing the voice for free and after it became a big hit he offered to voice the third game for free if he could get a cut of bl2 profits and was fired. So he has openly said he has no interest in returning to that character ever
Aye, Pitchford needs to be Pitchforked.
classic gearbox
Its been a while since i listened to an almost hour movie rant from this channel since resident evil and still so satisfying.
These directors and actors need to accept one thing:
NOBODY is looking for them to be cranial and “experimental” with known content. The fans want the same stuff that made them fans. They need to stop treating popular IPs like they’re their personal brainchildren because all they did was snatch up an already established piece of amazing material in order to leech off the fanbase.
If you want to make something “fresh and new and creative” then CREATE something new.
But they cant create something new :(
Your sarcastic impersonation of the writing would have actually been more on brand for the real borderlands writing than what was attempted😂😂😂
10:20 lol if they were going to direct the actor to a different character as reference for Tina they could have directed her to Louise Belcher
You know a video game movie is bad when Uwe Boll pops up and says "i bet you wish i made this movie"

Avi Arad: "VENOM will be PG-13, so everyone can bring their children to watch it. It will be fun for the whole family."
Me: "þussy"
@@merphul yeah. Like how they made Venom more curious in the last dance (I hate the humor tho). It counts since this is just... Venom being Venom.
22:52 : - This character has a "Niko! It's your cousin! Let's go bowling!" vibe. 😀
I think if the movie had just been rated r, and more gun focused like the game, we could have overlooked all the other issues it had.
If that were the case it could've at least been entertaining, like the director was implying it to be in the beginning
a borderlands movie SHOULD be really good, youve got all you need for a movie, characters with predefined motives (loot), and actual character.

Slag exists, so that brings down the quality for 2.
I gotta give Ella Purnell credit for Fallout, she took time out to play the game legitimately after being cast.
"What's in the box" myst be a reference to the unique weapon called "The Gwen's Head" that can be found in boxes in The Dust in BL2 which has flavor text that says "Whats in the box?" In reference to the movie Se7en.
Dutch being Marcus is my favourite thing about any of this movie
As a borderlands (THE GAME) enjoyer, I was so ready for this video
The director of Silent Hill had his crew watch him play the games. The movie was what ever, but he got the atmosphere down 100%. It was probably one of my favorite videogame adaptations. Aside from the live action super mario movie.
Jamie Lee Curtis is a treasure and it is tragic that she was not able to play Dr Kureha in the one piece live action show
Nice idea, let's put all those actors who have no touch with videogames to act in a movie about a videogame, just incredible!
21:24 pretty sure that's a reference to "What's in the box?" a Se7en reference that was used in borderlands 2. It was pretty popular at the time.
A borderlands movie directed by *_Eli Roth_*
THIS SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN SUCH A FAILURE, THANKS RANDY
Calling Pre-Sequel trash made me very disappointed.

It's bad for actors to have standards?
@AC-hj9tv no they can't. He stood up for what he believed in and got fired for it. Granted it's not the same for him as it would be for you or me. But he still got fired. Was he right? Yes do I support him? Yes. But at the end of the day, You do what they say, how they say it. If not they can find someone else
@@AC-hj9tv Yes, if they want to get "any" roles. You know, job security and all. Which is not something you really have as an actor. The majority doesn't have that, only a couple of few are so beloved and always "in" that they can get roles like crazy. RE: Borderlands.
