Great video Jim, this really helped me put things into perspective. Maybe the people with all lot of LS experience, already knew, "OR THINK THEY KNOW" everything you touched on in this video, but i am new to the LS scene, and I've been searching for 2-3 weeks now, and have not found anything this informative to a newby. I was looking at the FAST intake, and aftermarket heads, and throttle bodies, and cams, excetera excetera.
Not only is this information overwhelming, but some of these parts are very expensive as you pointed out.Most of the information out there are advertisements! OR shootouts about peak power. This video is very well said, and well put. I know its gonna take money to build a strong and solid engine, but after watching this video, I have a better understanding of where to spend that money.Thank you. I am now a subscriber, and looking forward to your other videos.

I am planning an ls swap for my 66 Nova. I found many detailed builds online in hotrod magazine I think. They have probably 10+ different 5.3 builds completely detailed and dynoed every step of the way as with just 1 motor they test many different configurations and also bore and stroke some to 383. They also have 4.8, 6.0, and 6.2 builds. Tons of info for a noob like you and I. Good Luck
If youre new to LS engines, its all about getting them to breathe. A decent set of headers and a few other bolt on upgrades you can put down 375-400hp no problem. Once you start getting into the bigger cams and heads, they really wake up. A good heads cam exhaust combo can get you 500 or more NA. Also theyre really strong and you can boost fairly high on the stock bottom end without a rebuild. The best thing is theyre cheap and many companies make swap parts for basically any vehicle. My 88 s10 has a stock 6.0 in it and its pretty damn quick for a stock truck motor
You are correct. I watched a video on LS intakes and unless you are making 600 to 800 horsepower the LS 3,6 or trailblazer intake is just fine.
Ls3 intake is for square port heads. The ls6 and tbss are cathederal port and the tbss is actually better than the ls6 but its not as good looking. Stock intakes would support 800hp just fine. Unless youre planning on spending most of your time at high rpm making peak horsepower or you need to show off to the world you have a thousand dollars to blow on a F.A.S.T. intake and need to make 10 more horsepower at peak rpm then go for it. They did their homework on this series engines a lot of the stock stuff doesnt even need to be upgraded
@@tommys2979 finally someone else can point out the obvious. The stock intakes are more than capable, that's why they never get changed on a lot of the junkyard turbo LS builds. The reason they're getting pulled from the junkyard is cuz they're cheap, they're definitely not spending a grand on an intake manifold that isn't going to make a horsepower difference. 😂
Cylinders, CYLINDERS, NOT CHAMBERS. Chambers are are the combustion chambers in the head.

I did however click on this to see a specific parts list for a good LS build . Good points were made here. Would like to add the weight of an oil cooler / turbo piping / intercooler / is also more weight than a good N/A build or most supercharger setups .

HELL YEAH!! You are a straight shooter. Love it. I have seen so many of these youtubers do exactly what you described. They pump up the 5.3 and 4.8 liters saying that they can hold more adders but never talk about the real value of them. RIGHT ON MAN! I am a new sub for sure!

I was thinking of this exact video when watching a PowerNation 4.8 LS build. They got a 4.8 junkyard engine that had internal damage, then they added $1500 in parts to it. They would have been money ahead, just finding a good 6.0 (even if they had to pay $1000 for it), and done a cam and rockers. And the 6.0 would have much more potential for additional power with more modification. It helped show off fancy aftermarket parts, which I think was the goal all along.
I wouldn’t consider a 4.8 it would be the slowest one out of the bunch.

Good video. The truck engine/intake is definitely the best for low to mid range street driving and will definitely support power. If anything just port the truck intake and heads in a way to increase port velocity not opening them up so much that you loose low end and now need more mods to make power through in a decent cam nothing too crazy tune it and it will have you pretty happy especially if put in something smaller.

Richard holdener has great videos on LS Motors I suggest you go there. He has plenty of videos showing differences in motors, intakes, cams and heads. He also provides the charts that you can see the gains from low range RPM and high range RPMs. Common sense when watching like you noticed. You’ll be able to see the RPM band where you usually see yourself driving and you can determine okay which one has the best HP gain in my usual driving

This is all great when talking about 2 valves and when talking about 2 valve against 2 valve there is no replacment for displacement other than boost or nitrous but hes right on fair fields but everyone knows 4 valves on small motors do very well on turbo apps through rpm which accually works better for street racing at a better power band and not blowing the tires off plus not all engines are the same some are aluminium some are iron and iron weighs more but can take a better pounding.

Great to hear some comon sense for a change, rather than performance parts manufacturer hype and misinformation. Getting the best gains per dollar should be the goal, and to understand the hows and whys of that gain.
Exactly. People need to understand engines are about the combination of parts you put together to accomplish how you will use the vehicle. You also need to take into account the existing transmission, rear gears, converter, clutch....

Great video...if someone's on a budget..try building a 6.0 with some small chamber 5.3 heads..invest in a cam and spring kit and have some fun..if it blows..get another engine at the boneyard .
on a budget would be a 5.3 or 4.8 the 6 liter is usually much more expensive and hard to find. the 5.3 or 4.8 might be smaller but they also have thicker cylinder walls to hold more pressure..aka more boost. also their better as they can spin more rmps as well😜😉😉😉😁😁😁😂🤣🤣 I'm as budget as you'll find. when i swap in my ls/vortec 5.3 I'll get it up and running good stock then later swap in a tbss, tsp stage 3 Cam larger injectors and flash a new tune. and much much later a single 66 turbo. if your looking to spend and have more money and don't plan on a ton of boost the 6.0 use great.. if you want to eventually boost it alot do the 5.3 or 4.8 you'll also get way more rpm as well from those two... again they are cheaper to buy as well

It's also worth pointing out most gen 3 truck blocks the 4.8/5.3 is one block, the 6.0 is a different block. A 4.8 5.3 can't be bored out to a 4 inch bore to be a 6.0 since the 6.0 and 5.3 are the same crankshaft. There is some stupid rare 4.8 5.3 6.0 blocks that are typically 99-00 blocks that can be bored out to a 6.0 but they are wicked rare. Where I live you can pull a 5.3 out of the junkyard yourself for a little less than 400 but the 6.0s are just hoarded by the vultures and flipped on fb marketplace for about 2k. I went to the yard at opening for 2 weeks trying to find me a new 6.0 for my truck and they would always be picked by the time I found a car that had it. I got lucky and found out my old 6.0 seized up due to rods and the mains had survived so I'm building it into a 408 stroker.
For those who do buy a 6.0 gen 3 motor. a quick tip on how to make some cheap power out of it is to buy a set of 706 or 862 heads from the junkyard which are readily available, the smaller chamber will bump the compression up a nice bit and make power. I took the liberty of porting mine as well cause I got mine for 60 bucks and if I ruin them oh well I'll go get another set and try again and get better at it.

Your thumbnail was misleading, but the information in the video was on point. The average person assumes the same gains you get on a 6.2 or 6.0, you will get on a 5.3 or 4.8 Plus like you pointed out, most horsepower numbers are highlighted at 5k rpms or higher. Unless the engine is being used for a strip or road race application, those numbers are not relevant for regular street applications.
As a ford man I have to say the L77 with a L98 cam and a DOD delete is a solid little block, I must admit.
I have the L77 but no L98 cam.....I have a VCM 3 cam, Manley Dual valve springs, ARP cam bolt set, ARP balancer bolt, VCM pushrods, solid flywheel with DOD delete, twin 3 inch Harrop exhaust with massive custom headers and a heap of other stuff lol, I want a bigger cam but i'm going to be putting a Turbo on it so i can't go too big with the cam.....But at the moment it's pushing 322RWKW with 700nm torque, they definitely are a very solid engine....angry as hell when your right foot gets heavy lol

I have not since I am personally sticking to naturally aspirated. Due to the lag, if I needed more HP, I would probably go for a super charger myself However, I did see about a year ago that someone was making a "lag-less" turbo. Not sure if it is out yet, but I might have seen it demoed or discussed on PowerNation.

Not sure where your getting the boosted 4.8 vs 6.0 numbers. Stock 4.8 makes 288hp vs 325 on a 6.0 if you add one atmosphere 14.7 psi you would essentially double the horsepower at this rate you have only lost under 100hp from 6.0 to 4.8.
Also a 4.8 can be spun to 8k and on turbo application makes it very favourable. Also usually less than 1/2 the price of a 6.0
I have an ls 4.8 and it makes 305 I want to put a whipple on it to just have fun lol
These numbers are correct for the engines that were tested with other mods. I am just holding all things equal and using this as a baseline to compare just the boost across multiple engines. However, I can see how you might have thought it was stock with boost.

Most people think adding parts give big gains. Also many do not understand that while you may not see gains in one part of the torque or power curve with one mod but may change it somewhere else. Example the truck vs car intake….. the truck intake gains more low end torque because of the long runners and more air sitting in the intake when you begin accelerating but the car intake gains more power in the top end and lose some low end torque. The difference being around 5-10hp/torque but only shifted in the curve.
No replacement for displacement. Weight of the vehicle is one thing but unsprung rotational mass is even more significant.

Have a blue 1984 Monte Carlo SS it got a Scoggin Dickey parts center new custom 6.0 LS2 crate engine in 2008 with CNC ported LS3 heads with a GM single plane intake a holley HP 850 carburetor a cam with 236 duration with 600 lift 112 intake centerline and LS7 hydraulic lifters 1 7/8 longtube headers on a engine dyno minus accessories with a 15 percent underdrive pulley made 542 horsepower at 6900rpm and 470 foot pounds of torque at 5200rpm at the crankshaft it runs off a LS MSD box pulls very very hard from 3000rpm to the 7200rpm redline idles decent with a slight chop at 800rpm cruises well from idle to 3000rpm with good maintenance oil changes and so on its still in the car runs as good or better than when put in 2008 I'd have to say I've been more than happy the last 12 years with it still enjoying it in 2020 it has other transmission mods 700r4 a 3000 lockup stall converter a buick GN 8.5 rearend with 4.10 gears suspension has rear lift bars and moroso drag springs front and back that is simple and works very well the car has embarrassed most very expensive supercars in the quarter mile in the last 12 years from ZL1s ,ZR1s, Hellcats, GT500s, modded 5.0 coyote mustangs and modded LT1 and LS3 camaros challenger 392 Scatpack to name a few but it has lost to some that have been modded with suspension and race prepped with drag radials

Guys tell your opinion. I have a 5.3 with a full exhaust system and a stock air intake filter. Before I tune my truck, do you think it’s better to install an aftermarket air filter or is it ok ?

My parents have a Yukon Xl Denali with a Lq9 and i’m already a gear head at 16 but i don’t want to do anything to the engine because it’s in a 5,000lbs Suv lol

You can easily make 600whp with a sbe 4.8 and 5.3 cam and springs go along way with a couple wootang spinnny bois

In the end the 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 all react differently depending on certain mods. Each engine is special in it's own way, even though 90 percent of everything is shared between each other. It's like a Lego set, millions of choices. But they will always be unique no matter how you build them.

I just don't know the type of tranny to use my thoughts are a turbo400 with a 4,000 stall. Any and all advice is welcome. I plan on doing a start to finish build on my utube channel. I just don't want to be the slow guy or known as the gate keeper anymore. Wish me luck on my first build
Turbo400 is old school tech. If you're looking for an automatic transmission for that motor,look at the 4l60 to 4l85e. Those are found in trucks with the 6.0 motor.And they are easy to install, because they are already behind that kind of motor.

Thinking of restrictions rather than multipliers may help. Splicing a section of 8" wide pipe into a 2" hose isn't going to help much. Replacing the intake (or whatever) is going to have little impact if your old intake was flowing enough air, more if your intake was choking your heads and cam.

I will add make sure you watch Richard Holdner's channel and you need specific power at a speciifc rpm range for you application.
For the most part people are adding a turbo to these junk yard motors because the stock blocks and internals can handle the extra horsepower. These motors are capable of 800-1000 with that clunky truck intake and a turbo.
Hi, great vid. Have 01 Suburban 2500. So weight is around almost 7000 empty. Lq4 in IT. What IF i have Sub for hauling lot of stuff and family on highways and doing about 3-4000 rpms because of hills and higher speed limits. IF i want more kick when i am about 70 mls and want speed up to almost 95. And lot of other situations when you need quicker speed ups. IS it realible to put turbo to this thing? What about transmission? Its 4l80e. Have some good kit advice? Thanks you.
Highway passing. It seems turbo might be the ticket or getting you a ticket. LOL 4l80e is rated for ~ 700 hp so you should be fine.
Yes lq4/lq9/ls2 are awesone if you dropped them in but, the 5.3 loves boost way more then the 6.0, and if you're adding performance your probably tagging the rev limiter often
Why would a 5.3 like boost more if the block is the same design?
@@greenespirit4973 The cylinder walls on the 5.3 are 1/4 inch thicker than the 6.0. 3.78 inch to 4.0 inch. More clamping strength with more area between the cylinder. So you can boost the hell out of it like 10 psi all day long and not hurt it even if you have an aluminum block. For added insurance get s thick deck head with ARP fasteners.
I know this video is 2 years old but I am planning on making a truck from scratch. I need a lot of power for hauling metal and trailers. Definitely need a ton axle and 4 links because streets here are like the moon surface. What block will be ideal for lots of power and to haul the weight of the truck plus another 8k pounds? Is going to be a working truck basically but needs to look good for the business
You need torque and reliability. I would start with a stock 6.0 or 6.2L and keep the stock truck intake since it has more torque than the aftermarket intakes. Any specifics from there, we will have to have the community chime in since I am more familiar with light street cars.
I'm thinking of 6.0 chevy engine for my 85 crewcab flatbed. Currently has 454 and I get about 8 mpg.
I will be hauling my welder and weld gear on-board..... What do you think about horse power and it not being sluggish... Is it worth it for for advantages of gas a pulling power.
LS will be way more gas efficient. Go for one that has the most torque if you are pulling.

You make since but ,chamber size in your heads and flow numbers don't always add up. If you're running naturally aspirated, dished pistons and a decent cam work great with 706 heads that people love to junk. If you want a 400 hp street rod, a lot of aftermarket stuff you don't need. Chevy designed those intakes pretty well. If you are running forced induction and want 700 hp it's not that reliable for fun on the street. The only thing I would do is eliminate vats , add a proper cam and springs longtubes if you have the room. The Trailblazer ss intake is nearly as good as any Holley on the market for under 500hp. A good tuner is a must. Nitrous is a lot cheaper for added hp, but rough on the motor. I could see using an after market fast or holley terminator or something if swapping into an older car, just to avoid the hole harness deal. Turbos are great and so are blowers but that's for much added power and larger chambers, flat tops etc. Just do your research about what works together well for a street machine before you decide on a bunch of crap that don't do right for your needs.
The stock 6.0 fuel rails intake with springs, cam, same injectors can get new ones or decap old ones or run stock and get close to 500 and thats na .. so if you plan on buying all new sure its expensive. Adding a turbo your talking about more upgraded springs rods injectors fuel pump now you're almost doubling the amount you spent on the 500hp set up to gain about 600 650 hp.. a 500 hp set is a very good application if you're building a meet vehicle and cruising around with your buddies alot of people don't realize just how much 500hp really is. It's pretty damn quick
James Winchester yea I can never understand how people act like even 400hp is nothing lol. 400hp in a old truck for example is enough to get you thrown in jail! 500 will get you thrown in a little quicker LOL 😂. People aren’t real impressed with 350hp in stock trucks but they are super heavy and 4x4. When you drop 350-400hp in a old C10 2wd street truck it will rip!!

400 hp is alot of power ! Get into 500 Hp you better have rebuilt the stock transmission and get ready to replace the rear end / bearings / clutches

Stock 04 LQ9 with ls6 intake and long tubes no cats married to a t56
Stock lq4 makes 300 horse. With a car intake youll make more top end power over the truck intake. As for long tubes and going catless youll need a tune. If you really want to bump up your numbers either deck your 317 heads .030" or get a set of 243/799s and a cam upgrade. You can acheive 4-450 hp out of a cammed 6.0 easy. If you really want big power swap some square port heads onto it with an ls3 style intake, a fat cam and long tubes can get you 500 hp pretty easily
You turbo sa ls put a turbo cam in and run close to 15 psi and you will be really close tonthe 6 to 700 mark with ease.
Best bang for the buck is probably a 4.8l and you throw a 4inch crank in it and bumps it to 383 maybe a little more if they bore it out at the machine shop

Only 1 problem. The 5.3l specifically the L33 is the best for high boost due to the thicker wall and flat top pistons or compression ratio. It is well know you can get more power out of a 5.3l boosted than you can a 6.0 due to the limitations of the bored cylinder and weaker block..... food for thought
The l33 already has excellent heads... 243/799. My truck actually has 1 of each from the factory. 243 passenger side, 799 driver side. The truck intake is perfect for trucks or anyone that wants big torque down low and mid range. If I ever change my intake it will be a dual throttle intake. Other than that your wasting your money. Unless of course your building the rotating assembly. Then take this mans advice and build a 6.0. And if your boosting it a 6.0 make sure to build it for boost. Otherwise stay with a 5.3l. It’s all in the money you want to spend
L33 is the way to go!
Stock 6.0 bottom end survives 1500+ hp on Holdener's big bang series, and it's not the block that fails. How much boost/hp are most folks planning on running that the theory of the cylinder walls could come into play? Is there some documentation that the block becomes the limit at some level and what hp is it?

5.3 with nice heads and a big cam can give you like 60hp
Dude a properly tuned one with a cam change only will get 100 HP
You can still make plenty of horsepower with a stock intake as opposed to getting an aftermarket. Larger throttlebody, bigger injectors, cam,long tubes with free flowing exhaust and call it a day.

Off the top, I think it would be all about the same. Most of the LS engines have small differences. Other should chime in.
jim i have 2010 sierra 5.3L i would like to swap it with 6.0L engine from 07 Escalade can I do this swap without going through major rewiring? in other words can the newer ECM handle older engine?? appreciate your inout
If you are saying they are both LS engines, it would work if it is the same generation. i.e. both using a Blue green computer for instance. However, unless your 5.3L is dead you might just want to spruce it up instead of swapping since you are already in the LS family. Cam/turbo/springs will go a long way.
So, all you're really saying is what's been said since day one whether it's an LS engine or a vintage iron block- 'There's no replacement for displacement:. period. Good insight for sure... what's the bottom line then? Get the largest LS engine you can afford with an aluminum block- only mod as needed based on driving conditions. I"m very strongly considering doing and LS swap on my Porsche 964 (911 Carrera 4) and have been holding off based on what LS I should buy. If I'm mostly driving this as a daily driver- rarely every really into the pedal- and looking for reliability and dependability- I should get the largest LS I can find- leave it stock- but if I end up wanting more power- simply bolt on a turbo and have low-moderate boost. Whacha think?
