    I bought the Z9 a few months ago. I absolutely love it. My main video cameras are Red, but I've been exploring the HDR capabilities of the Nikon's Z9 8.3k/60fps. The Z9 provides gorgeous HDR content. Also, the AF is fantastic. The ability to get top-notch video capabilities with the AF is a time saver. I've been testing the Z9 on my Steadicam because of its AF, and I must say it does not disappoint. Once it locks on to a subject, it does not let go. And on top of all this goodness, it's also a fantastic picture camera. lol. The almost 50mp of RAW images are a delight to edit. Thanks for this review. Like so many others have said, people are sleeping on the video capabilities of this camera.

      @@makatron These Z9 battery lasts a very long time. I believe I can continuously shoot 8.3k video for a few hours using their one battery. I’m not 100% sure but I had an HDR gig that lasted a few hours. I don’t remember having to worry about switching batteries. Hope that helps. Good luck!

    Here's the deal, I've used Nikon for decades as a PJ and got front covers on WSJ, Washington Post etc. Never failed me once. My Z9 took on assignment to Western Mongolia minus 25 degrees and it was my hero. The images were fantastic and not once did it make a mistake. The battery lasted all day etc. Most reviewers only use the camera for a few days and take shots of their dog in their yard and think its wildlife . As a working pro the Z9 is bar none the standard in pro camera gear.

Unfortunately if you delete anything through the "Storage Management" window...it's just gone immediately. No recycle bin 😐

    Nikon ergonomics are legendary but that could be just that I started and stuck with them. I still believe this because for the past 15-ish years I've been using Canon digital in commercial studios and I still favor the Nikon ergonomics. I started with the FM2 back in the early 90s when I got started, then bought a bunch of old used ones, Titanium F3, F2AS, etc, then a slew of newer AF film bodies. The D2x was my first digital from them, then the D3, and the last one I bought was a D700. I'm finally getting into motion, and I've already decided I want to land on the C70. I bought a C100 MkII as my trial balloon and love it, even running all Nikon glass on it. I think really (and oddly) this goes back to my love of Nikon. It seems to me Canon with their cinema cameras have taken the approach of buttons over menus, and that just feels more like home to me. I will probably never consider a camera without built in ND. I don't think I'll ever consider a Nikon for cinema/motion. Canon and others are just too far out front to have me believe Nikon will ever catch up.

    Nikon was late to the game on video and getting great autofocus, but I'm glad they finally got it right. My first nikons struggle with auto focus for videos until I upgraded to the Z series. Just like your experience, I never had to think about it. It just works now. Excited you had an opportunity to try out the Nikon Z system. That keyed out intro, hm, giving me some great ideas. And purely.. how creatively you got yourself out of the trouble. Honestly Tom, I haven't seen a single video of yours in the past several years, that didn't give me some "ahaaa" moment, I'm so grateful fot the inspiration 🙂 And speaking of inspiration - NIKON was my first real camera, then I got me two Panasonics that I loved but realized (after learning about.. sensor sizes and physics..) that I'd still need a full frame for my photography. Entry made by Sony A7III as soon as it came out, never looked back. But yes, this NIKON is a very inspiring camera, the ergonomics and the grip, materials, thanks to your great B-roll, it felt as if I was holding it in my own hands and feeling it haha... Or is it just my insane imagination, really felt so well done.
    I'll tell you, if there were same camera mounts on all cameras, people'd be switching brands much more often 🙂

  • @ElGrecoDaGeek
    @ElGrecoDaGeek Рік тому +1

    Tom, the Z9 is a Sony *manufactured sensor, but it was 100% designed by Nikon. That has been the case for most of their sensors though some have been made by other manufacturers. Even those that are Sony designed get tweaked to death at the hardware level before they slap them into their cameras. There are a few websites that breakdown who designed and manufactured their sensors.
    As far as shutterless goes, in the next 2-4 years Sony/Canon will join the shutterless party. The lack of shutter shock is actually a huge plus for photography, especially when you get into exposure times of less than 1/30th. Less so obviously for video.
    SD Cards are also on the way out for professional cameras because of the limitations regarding speed and durability. I switched to XQD when I adopted the Z6.
    As far as other systems, I shot with Canon for 20 years starting with film. I switched to Nikon with the D750. I really loved the ergonomics of the dual control/command dials which Nikon introduced back on the Nikon F5 in the early 90s. I believe the R series cameras have introduced that dual command dial nature which I much prefer over my older Canon D series DSLRs. A friend of my who has the original Canon R did not have that. He really liked that as well but again I believe the R5 introduced something like it. Back in the day, Minolta (aka now Sony) had the same setup which made it's way into the original Alphas.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  Рік тому +1

      Ooh, the shutter shock point is a good one. That's definitely a big deal for certain situations!

    • @ElGrecoDaGeek
      @ElGrecoDaGeek Рік тому

      @@tombuck prior to mirrorless it was the same with DSLRs/SLRs and so called mirror flap. In many situations you could lock the mirror up after composing your picture to avoid the shock from the mirror. The advent of live view made it easier to compose in those situations. Live view being the precursor to mirrorless. My old Canon 30d didn't have it. I think my 7D was the first camera that I owned that had live-view.

  • @BBEEKKAY
    @BBEEKKAY Рік тому

    Glad you tried it. I used Nikon cameras for over a decade and then switched to Canon R mount bc they had affordable mirrorless cameras with a decent ecosystem and support for video, without being as pricey as Sony bodies.
    To be honest, I miss Nikon’s build quality, dynamic range, button layout, and sharp AF. The Canon I have now is great for video but I know the difference with the dynamic range compared to Nikon, especially for stills.
    There’s a great outdoor/nature photographer who shoots documentary style with Nikon named Morten Hilmer. Great examples from his YT videos.
    I hope you get a chance to work with Nikon again. I truly loved my experience.

    Terrific video. Nicely done.
    In reality, at the "flagship" echelons, the cameras are better than a lot of the photographers who buy them. When I got my Z9, though I have been shooting for over a half-century, I forced myself to sit down and read the manual for two weeks. It's humbling to hold technology whose capacities you know, deep down, surpass your current abilities. (And, thankfully, very provocative.)
    Me, I love my Z9... An awesomely powerful camera, be it with video or stills.
    Folks, If you haven't shot Nikon and think Sony and Canon are the only contenders, you are doing yourself a disservice.
    That said, Tom, what gear were you using to shoot those luscious closeups of the Z9? So tight and crisp.

    • @tombuck

    I started my commercial shooting business back in the day with the Nikon D1 as it was the first and best when it came out. Invested heavily in Nikon glass. All good. Great feel of the camera. So, when Nikon announced their new camera with more megapixels, of course I jumped on it. That was the D2H. Probably the worst camera Nikon has ever made and I think it was the last camera to use a Nikon sensor. The white balance and exposures were wildly erratic. The good and bad news is Nikon is one of those corporations that does not really listen to their customers and despite the uproar from professional shooters I think it took another 18 months for them to release a new body with maybe a Sony sensor. I sold all my glass and switched over to Canon. The lesson I learned from that is not to get overly invested in one company and nowadays there are so many niche cameras that I have a quiver of Sony, Fujifilm, DJI, Insta360, etc. From what I have seen, the new "ZED" series from Nikon is a reasonable evolvement.

    Hi, love your videos but have to tell you about some problems the z9 has that make it unprofessional:
    1. Nikon's focus is rubbish next to the competition.
    2. It is not possible to record on 2 cards at the same time. Meaning not suitable for professional work.
    3. There is no smart hot show different from the competition.
    4. There is no articulated screen, there is only a strange and clearly incomprehensible screen.
    5. The camera is limited to a recording time of 125 minutes haha, all competitors have already done unlimited time.
    Summary: I recommend that you look for another company for video shooting...
    A camera that is sold at such a high price should include at least basic things for which it is intended, and I can tell you that I would not do any paid photography with it without backup on 2 cards at the same time.

      Always good to have some counterpoints. I'm impressed with the Z9 myself, but sticking to my Sonys because I really love them.

      I don’t think an articulating screen is actually a valid argument. At this price point if you’re using it for professional video, get an external display.

      @@Joe-hm1zk Do you want to shoot with an external screen for 6 hours at the event?
      And what is this answer that will take an external screen? So why am I paying exactly $5,500 for a camera? It's better to take any other company that isn't Nikon and I'll get these basic things..

      @@gavriel_adi Man those poor people shooting on cinema cameras. If only they knew small bodied mirrorless cameras existed.

      @@Joe-hm1zk I don't shoot film, I make video at events.. What about the Z9? I'm supposed to be sure that one memory card won't fail in the middle of the shoot, and then if it fails, I get a claim from the couple I photographed for losing the material of their lives..
      It is Nikon that does not back me up with such claims and therefore I will not buy Nikon
      Not right now.
