I remember these running around when I used to travel to visit family in Guanajuato as a kid. In later years, the Nissan Sentra took over, under the Tsuru badge iirc.
Sadly the Tsuru is on its way out too, now there's no cheep, reliable, and fuel efficient car to take their place
You can't improve perfection
You should do one in Cuba with all their classic American cars? Unfortunately most of the engines have been swapped out for newer ones. Just fascinating how they keep them running.
Level
Newer as in literal soviet-bloc industrial diesels and lots of ingenuity and rigging.
You might be interested in Havanna Motor Club...
American motors were pieces of shit back then anyway so its only smart to uprade em
Mighty Car Mods did a vid down there.
God bless these cabbies and their cars. Good on them, keep the tradition going!
I was just in mexico and they are scattered everywhere. some beat up, some stripped down, and some clean and modified. Such a cool little car and it was cool seeing them all over the place. (except those nissan tsurus, those taxis are at every fucking street corner)
my grandmother had 3 or 4 of these. she sold her last one to my uncle, a white one since she didn't drive, and was restored with new paint, tires and parts
Mexico also has the most JDM car that you can get in the Americas. The nissan hikari turbo
The Beetle MK4 are also interesting especially the lifted ones! Viva los Vochos y Beetles!
Ive always wondered why there were so many classic looking bugs in mexico
I heard that they made the old beetle in Mexico until 2003 whereas in the us production stopped in 1979. They made the old beetle for so long in Mexico by the time they stopped production the new beetle had already been out for 6 years
@@agrisimfarming you heard correctly
I wish I had a Volkswagen Beetle. I honestly do.
Had one hated it throughout the ownership. Then again I like to go fast!
But the sitting position for me (5.11 ft.) was horrid.
you're in luck because one in good condition will only run you 6 or 7 thousand dollars
Just come to any part of mexico, they're dirt cheap, like 1000-3000usd in good condition and clean
@@900108Chale I'm 6'4 and they're usable. The giant steering wheel hitting my legs is the only real gripe I have
Man I would love own one of those!👌🥰👍
Hola,yo te go un Vocho 1975,desde nuevo y despues de 48 años es el mejor auto que he tenido, saludos desde Guadalajara Mexico
I used to look down on these rigs, wimpy little flower power cars I thought, now I just wish something so simple and robust could be marketed today, I'm starting to react to the term "infotainment system" like its a vile oath. Although something along the lines of the Thing or the older Kubelwagen might be more my style.
When you consider that the last ones left the assembly line in 2003 one has to consider even the newest beetle is 2 decades old (not counting the new beetles which were based more on the rabbits).
Trust me those fucking bochos are tougher than the 2030 silverado 4x4 haha
we need more vochos
Can't hate, I'd daily that
What about the Ford Maverick?
That car was the preferred Taxi in other towns closer to Acapulco which share similar characteristics to this city, Taxco. Same reasoning applied: sturdy trannie, never over heated, easy to repair and cheap.
At some point buying a used Maverick in Mexico was expensive, since Taxi drivers would buy them all. I am talking 90s and early 2000s.
When Hitler called it the "People's Car" he forgot to mention the word: Mexico. Before that.
Well you could add 'Brazil' too... these two countries had significant investments in the factories by vw. As they were both large territories and in a moment where the economies were starting to take off - it was a wise move - post war of course. In every sense, the Beetle was an international success.
A Hitler se lo olvido decir "coches del pueblo latinoamericano"
Amazing how long things last when you don't fix what ain't broke
Funny thing i have the same color bug in mexico foot to the floor with them hills😂
I was wondering about that,.. those hills look steep in Taxco. Too bad you can't hear the engine note in the video.
Very popular in Brazil too, so popular that production stopped in the 90s. The Samba Bus version only stopped a few years ago.
SÚPER VOCHO. El auto del siglo XX
Aren't laws wonderful......1000 of them still in use in the city, they are illegal, but still going. That is free enterprise flourishing in the face of stupidity. Rock on little Capitolist Beetles!
i think the video refers to Illegal in Mexico City where they were original from, but after the new law they became illegal in Mexico City. Most Mexicans cities dont share the same regulations since Mexico City has it's own ambiental problems. I see Vochos too in my city at Mexico
Were I to be there - a beetle I would seek also in which to travel.
Why won't Volkswagen just rebuild the good old Beatles that they use to. They would make so much cash.
Modern crash safety standards might get in the way, emissions would be easy enough to update for, but the safety standards would be tough.
Regulations! And pollution control, those VW air cooled boxer engines are nasty pollutants.
Same reason the S10 died, cheap vehicle that never died means the owner is less likely to buy a new vehicle anytime soon.
^ i think you mean old japanese trucks like the nissan hardbody and toyota hilux (now these mini trucks TAKE A BEATING while still being reliable and affordable)
ya, they wouldnt make any cash... these cars sold for 2,000... this is the reason why they did well, because mechanically speaking they are very basic and in these days almost nobody would buy them. everyone wants a self driving Tesla.. Not a car that requires 5x more maintenance than the regular car.. And still costs more to drive.. although i love them, realistically they are terrible cars... They are just super basic which makes them hard to kill, and easy to fix.. nothing more.. This is the reason why people bought them.. then after a huge following happened large companies started to supply parts for them.. This is why they stayed around
I daily a 1963 beetle. I take it everywhere
Jacob Holbrook You are my hero.
Kevin Buck oh I'm not special. Plenty of these cars are on the road.
I "daily" my 1965 beetle in the non-winter months. Glad to see others are doing the same. With the ease of maintenance and reliability, its great to be able to drive such a special car everyday; people love it.
i daily a ‘72 super
67 drag car in my Garage right now
What was the last year of production for the air cooled VW including the Transporter? This might surprise people as in SA they were made for decades long after production had stopped in US and Europe.
Production of the T2 Transporter and Kombi survived a full decade longer than the Beetle finally ceasing production in Dec 2013.
Cool
I wonder if they ever worked on the rust issues
It's pretty dry out there in Mexico, so it's like a SoCal bug, not much rust to watch out for
Cut and weld a new metal plate.
Parts abound down here. And yes that City, Taxco, is pretty dry. The Bug's most difficult issue down here are the rust in the floor panels, where you cut and weld...
Other cars dont rust?
They survive in spite of working as taxi.
I want to import a rust free vocho to Tennessee!
i own a 1999 mexican beetle that was a taxi not in the best shape but i plan on giving it a 2nd chance at life and to take good care of it
cool
How easy / hard is it to buy a bug from Mexico and bring it into USA?
They are cheaper, but the paperwork to legalize for USA would be expensive. From lawyers to bakers own vochos in Mexico as well.
@@Spiritusanto16 ...I know it's not simple and I've seen folks do this from Europe for Grey market cars when that was in vogue....but it still would be good to know if someone has done it here who can comment and maybe also give guidance as to the cost doing it. Thanks.
@@TheWilferch I just was told that is not expensive all the paperwork here in the USA, the hard time is when crossing through usa-mexico. Here is the link if you want check it out some bugs in Mexico; mercadolibre.com.mx
just type volkswagen vochos and do some convertions 1us dollar = 20.18 mx pesos and km to mi.
@@Spiritusanto16 ...many thanks for this information ! However, NOW I see that the Mexican Beetles ALL have the old swing-arm rear suspension !!.....why would anyone (VW, VW-Mexico) do that? The changeover to IRS was done on German cars in 1968....so NATURALLY I expected the Mexican cars to be likewise updated.....oh, man... no !!
@@TheWilferch well because as the guy in the video said why change something that works
Es un auto increíble yo tengo 3 y la verdad nunca los venderia 😂
Must be needed to Cuban taxi drivers who are still using old school Havana taxis to be replaced
Most of them are engine swamped or the engines are just mostly dead already
Im Cuban and my father was a Taxi driver of a 1953 Chevrolet from my Grandpa
“surviving” ?
the vw beetle was still being produced in mexico up until 2003
the mexicans also got rid of the air cooled system, now they’re water cooled
not true, the "Ultima edición" vw beetle still air-cooled
Hindustan ambassador vibes
"no other car has kept the same design for such a long time and been a success?" you forgot the land rover Defender
Sir Shanks and lada niva
defender changed body styles MANY times... no car comes even close to the VW bug for production time.....lol
not even close to the VW Bug. Defender in name only.
@@glennhansel9411 Bug '45, Series 1 '47. Both been long staples but the latter loved through generations. "No other car" the video says
