Clear explanation and super helpful! I watched this video and scored a gyaku-dou ippon in our internal shiai, just a few days later. I seized the opportunity and kept my hands position, hasuji and posture as well as zanshin. The hit was not crisp enough tho. But the shinpan awarded it immediately.
Also you have to keep in mind a samurai would were a wakizashi or a saya at least on that side of the body, that's why the hit has to be on target and stronger than a normal do to be considered valid.
kabyl Makeshov actually that’s a common misnomer - the strike has to fulfill the criteria in the same way as all other Waza - no consideration has to be made for any imaginary Saya, Armour, or other equipment 😉
@@TheKendoShow I'm fortunate to have a former team US member as one of my sensei, Travis Hill. I've seen him score some awesome gyaku-do. I''ll try them in shiai but haven't raised any flags. Good video as always Andy-san. Hoping to get back in the dojo so I can wear my Vangaurd and Shinobu bogu sets again! Really liking the Victory Kote too.
I am loving seeing all of the team mates' reactions in these clips hahaha
I laughed at the "his men himo is triggering me" - Thanks for reminding me I need to adjust mine during lockdown!!

I learned that it's hard to make an ippon because of the imaginary saya in japan.....
Tozando blog speaks about this subject this week : weblog.tozando.com/why-is-migi-do-called-gyaku-do-vol-1/?mc_cid=b2fd5a7ca7&mc_eid=68938969c0
The hardest part of scoring gyaku do is having shimpan that actually know it's a point.
That’s part of the reason I made the video 😉
