If the GOV wanted to make trucking safer they should require all truck driver to be paid by the hour not CPM it would be something like this calculate how many hours it would take to get from shipper to receiver legally and pay them a good hourly fee that cover all the expenses and give a profit. Then that would take out any reason to speed and be in a hurry. And do not let the receiver unload early

  • @SL-lu3sw

I’ve seen these trucks on the interstate. They still have a driver in the vehicle. But, I can definitely see this happening with mega carriers first.
Particularly with in-line routes. Old Dominion, UPS, Walmart, Amazon, Yellow, type of carriers. They probably will end up building their own fuel stations for service to fuel or switch batteries, clean sensors, inspect trucks, ect…
But, to deliver the goods to the customers, they will still need someone to actually unload the trailers. Traverse locally in places like the New York metropolitan area, and to dock in places that are not fit for a “ driverless truck “ to traverse.
Would definitely like to see a driverless truck go into the places I have to go, like junk-scrap yards, or those places that the dock is in a blind corner and behind trees and sunken in.
Point being, mega carriers, from point A to point B, dock to dock type of loads will be first to go. The yard Jockey jobs as well within these companies will also be taken.
But, companies that extrapolate goods from the places that are not set up , or designed for driverless vehicles to traverse and dock into their facilities will still need an actual driver to operate the vehicle.
I only have about 7- 10 more years before I decide to retire, or leave the country. Or both… I am lucky enough to work for a relatively small company that produces their own products. But the places I have to go for raw materials and products, I seriously doubt a driverless semi truck would be practical.
The pot holed, dirt-gravel lots, and blind-tight spots would be enough for the driverless truck to be invalidated. Not to mention the dust bowls we go into clouding the sensors and throwing mud everywhere.
Also, would like to see who would be responsible for the weight distribution on the trailer.. who is going to responsible to slide the tandem’s, and who is going to stop the shippers from overloading the trailer? Who’s responsible to secure the load? Where are these trucks going to park when the weather gets rough? Who is going to be responsible for going out to the middle of nowhere to clean the snow off the truck?
If you think we have a supply chain problem now, just wait for the time when you see hundreds, if not thousands of driverless trucks stuck in route because of a heavy downpour or snow storm.
Last point, they can boast about driverless trucks all they want, but the practicality is far reaching, and our infrastructure at the moment is subpar at best. There are too many factors that make this impossible for the United States to go fully automated.
Going to be funny when an automated truck stops because a gust of wind blew a little too hard.
They are going to find out that a driver does a whole lot more than just drive. ( THAT WE AREN’T PAID FOR!!!! )

They're trying to prevent accidents involving trucks, huh?? Ooooh, so they think accidents involving trucks are mostly caused by truck drivers. Well, if they get these self-driving trucks approved, they will find out what really goes on on the roads and how many accidents we actually avoid and prevent by giving up our right of way, etc, while braking and maneuvering in a manner that will protect the cargo we are hauling. People test us all the time - all impatient but mainly young drivers. They love to jump from behind us when we signal and speed up next to us to prevent us from chamging lanes and also cut across our trucks very closely from the middle lane to the exit last minute. That is why I don't drive in the right lane on multiple lane roads in areas with many exits. I'll never forget the car that cut infront of me then brake last minute at the light. I had to brake so hard, the cargo ripped the rivets out the etrac rail and bent the rail. I had the distance calculated and was braking accordingly when he took away my braking distance and I was very heavy. These are just a few of the challenges we face on the roads on a daily basis. They better tes, test, test and test well because every mile can bring you a new challenge - after 5-years, I still experience new challenges from regular drivers (Non-CDL) just about every day I'm go out on the roads. Some things I would never have thought a driver would do around a very big and heavy piece of equipment, risking their lives and others around them. I reiterate, test well. Test well.

It’s not happening soon. There is too much going on that a robot truck can’t account for yet. The ONLY way self driving semis can be a thing is if ALL cars are autonomous and no one is allowed to drive anymore. Otherwise there is too much to account for.

  • @shaneamundson1192
    @shaneamundson1192 2 години тому +1

If we want to win the battle against driverless vehicles, (and other potentially dangerous robots) let's stop calling them autonomous vehicles. The term gives the impression that nobody is responsible for it's actions. The truck may be driverless, but that does not mean that there isn't someone who is still morally and legally responsible for it's safe operation.
A human being, who makes a choice to put a driverless vehicle on the road is responsible to operate it. When his vehicle commits an error, resulting in a collision, injury, or death, it is the owner who has failed to operate his vehicle in a safe manner. He needs to be ticketed and prosecuted personally. If we the people hold people personally responsible for the operation of the devices they own/operate, regardless if that operation is by using his mind to control his body to operate that truck, or if he uses computers and artificial intelligence to operate that truck, we can bring this threat by greedy corporate thugs against our jobs and our freedom to a grinding halt.

The pay is good but inflation has chipped away of the salary making it feel like we don’t get paid a lot anymore, therefore making it not good and companies aren’t really focusing on that aspect
Inflation and the government continuously printing money combined with self driving will slowly push out drivers non stop regulations and this is a recipe for Self Driving to thrive

I'm not a trucker. But have driven Ulber/Lyft and do use the map function a fair amount. 1st thing is they have to get the maps a lot more accurate. I've often been directed to places a half mile away and on the wrong side of an interstate (which took a 5 mile trip to get to the place across the interstate). Easy to do in a smaller car. Much harder to do in any large truck.
2nd, fair weather day testing is so far from real world driving during "non-fair" weather. My guess is that in the snow or icy conditions that either these trucks just stop in their traffic lane or the truck will end up in the ditch.

What they are currently doing is not practical now but, it may create some useful tools for future use. But the changes nessasary will take a long time to develop. I'll be long gone by then, so I'm not worried.

The problem is under test conditions it is a controlled environment. If you want a real test, put it on a actual busy road way, with the unpredictability of others on the road.
Not all truck and bus accidents are on us drivers, often times it is the actions of others. Just like that "Texas crash, where the drive of a passenger van lost control and hit a truck. The family of the one who caused that accident filed lawsuit against the trucking company and driver off the truck. "I believe that happened" i think they won? Which is wrong, if they did.

People worry to much , all this stuff is great when there’s what 3 cars on the road. What about 3000 cars. One day when everyone is using flying cars then you can have self drivers but it’s so far off. Just remember this every time you see the news where drivers are involved in these deadly accidents it makes them work faster to accomplish this.

They are testing this on a closed test track roadway, where it is a well maintained surface road. What about real life roadways, with potholes, uneven lanes,, or edges that catch the tires and make the truck swerve ? Or the four wheelers driving like they do around trucks ??

Introducing driverless semi truck vehicles is just greedy and dangerous... the roads are in terrible condition and a truck will flip easily... other bad drivers issues, sudden equipment failures problems... its just a terrible idea..

So, they should get the worst drivers on the road that like to tailgate trucks, stay next to trucks so they can't merge quickly because the 4 wheelers want to save fuel. Then they should do this test. This is a controlled test on a controlled testing site. Again, not real world scenario that truck drivers have to deal with everyday.
All police officers/ Highway patrol should have to be with local state truck drivers for a month to see what they have to put up with on the road every day for a month before the officers gets to work Highway patrol. This goes to show, that police officers and the FMCSA still look at truck drivers as criminals.
Many moons ago I got pulled into Banning California with all the other truck drivers and I could'nt help but laugh because on the highway next to Banning there were U-hauls, Ryder trucks , Motorhomes etc that could be carrying all kinds of illegal stuff and they were pulling in commercial trucks. Can you say DUH! I am glad I don't have to drive a commercial truck in California any more.
This video reminds me of that garbage where its what the Police and Greedy people (Gov/Corporations) want, not what is best for the driver. There are many times as a truck driver that you can't just pull right over right now garbage. They know this, that is why they will still have a person sitting in the seat so they can have someone to blame when the technology fails, like it always does.
Remember, your not just a truck driver you are a revenue generator!

Normally would just brush this off quickly but for some reason this stupid topic keeps being brought up. If your a veteran truck driver you will know the answer to this. So for the ones that are new ,confused ,worried, or concerned this idea of mass self driving trucks could only happen if there's a CDL driver in that truck! Why? There are way too many variations of events that happen daily with a truck/trailer the list is unlimited! Fmcsa should make 1 statement only and it should be we now will focus on fixing the shortage of truck parking!!
