Notes:
This is the longest track in Halo CE.
We've reached the point where songs such as Rock Anthem for Saving the World and Covenant Dance are being played for the second or third time. I decided to have some fun and re-arrange the loops of these songs to create a different listening experience, and I continue to do this throughout the rest of the soundtrack.
The intro to Truth and Reconciliation Suite plays when you first grab a banshee at the bottom of the control room pyramid.
This time, the On a Pale Horse loops get played at random.
"Hand over your construct. Or I will be forced to take it from you."
"That's not going to happen."
"Very well. Save his head, dispose of the rest."
@Anon Anon Seriously, Joe Staten wrote so many incredible quotes in these games. This was always a favorite. 343 GS goes from cheerful goofy ally to conflicting and suspicious in this cutscene, then to cold murderous machine with that last line.
We can't let the Monitor activate Halo. We have to stop him - we have to destroy Halo. According to my analysis of the available data, I believe the best course of action is somewhat... risky. An explosion of sufficient size will help destabilize the ring, and will cut through a number of primary systems. We need to trigger a detonation on a large scale, however. A star ship's fusion reactors going critical would do the job. I'm going to search what's left of the Covenant battlenet, and see if I can locate the Pillar of Autumn's crash site. If the ship's fusion reactors are still relatively intact, we can use them to destroy Halo."
I think this is the level where Halo 1 goes from "great FPS" to "fucking masterpiece." The entire ring is now a complete god damn warzone, Covenant and Flood just blasting the shit out of each other while you come rampaging through them like a force of nature on your way to the pulse generators; and sure, Half-Life and Marathon had made set pieces out of NPC battles before this, but never on the sheer scale that Halo had. It's still incredible to behold 20 years later, and the music makes it *perfect.* It's hard to explain to younger gamers just how much this shit blew our balls off back in 2001. There simply had never been an action game this huge, beautiful, or epic before. It may look primitive and quaint now, but back then it was the absolute bleeding edge.
A lot of people dislike this level (and the latter half of CE) for reusing earlier environments... the “copy/paste” complaint. It has never bothered me one bit. The atmosphere, combat encounters, lack of marines, and the higher stakes in the story make it stand out. This is one of the best levels in the series and I’m always ready to defend it.
@@EmDub01 same man this level fucking rocks, same with assualt on the control room
@@EmDub01it didn't even cross my mind when I played it until I got on UA-cam twenty years later and people were complaining about it. I loved the second half of the game, it felt so desperate and fucking feral.
Nothing is ever gonna top the experience of playing Halo for the first time in 2001. With the Large controller. There never was something quite like it since.
You got that right! The map layout may be the same, but the situation is completely different and nighttime. Plus the fact you are sent to new sections which were previously inaccessible makes it even better. Going through "Assault on the Control Room", you wonder what is beyond the cliffside platforms and on top of the spire in the last section with the scorpion. Then in "Two Betrayals", you get to go there and find out the platforms lead to pulse generators, and the spire has been turned into a Covenant outpost. Another detail of "Two Betrayals" is the crashed pelican no longer being there. Newbies may assume it was a mistake on Bungie's part. But actually it's gone because the Flood are most likely using it now.
I think the best part of playing "Assault on the Control Room" for the first time, was going outside onto the bridge and wondering what the rest of the canyon looks like. Then you get to travel through that same canyon you had seen from the bridge.
1st generator room: *empty
Me: *touches
Sentinels: REEEEEEEEEEE
One of my favorite levels in the whole series. I know some people don’t like it or the later levels because it’s a copy/paste job of earlier levels, but I disagree. The nighttime setting, the new enemies and the shotgun (my favorite weapon in the game), and the context given by the story really set it apart and help make it feel unique.
In terms of gameplay, it offers so much: you have access to every gun in the game and you go up against every enemy (besides the spec-ops elites + grunts and invisible flood that only appear in The Maw) and every enemy vehicle, wide open combat areas (with plenty of verticality, I especially love the different ways you can go down the entrance to the control room, taking out enemies below you) as well as the tight indoors ones, multiple ground and air vehicle sections (this is the level where the banshee really shines, I love making bombing runs in it), a few optional combat encounters like the one at the end with the two wraiths (you can bomb EVERYTHING if you want, which puts you at risk of getting shot down, or you can just.......fly away lol) and it feels like you went on a long odyssey by the time you make it to the last generator.
Story-wise, it starts off with a great plot twist (the discovery of the flood was already a surprise, but the discovery of Halo’s purpose is another great one) and the opening cutscene is really entertaining, reuniting with Cortana and watching her get all heated and confrontational with the ever-so-casual Guilty Spark, Chief realizing what is going on and gradually switching from Spark’s new best friend to pointing his gun at him, and Spark’s threatening dialogue at the end is just so good. It’s a nice cutscene with great voice performances that helps you to sit back and finally make sense of what has been going on throughout the whole story. It is also one of the moodiest levels-the atmosphere is at its strongest when you take off in the second banshee and “Opening Suite” from the very beginning of the game plays, or when you exit the tunnel and Under Cover of Night makes its return and “Final Run” appears. All of your marines are dead and gone, turned into undead monsters that you have to gun down, and you are all alone trudging through the cold, snowy night, just hoping that you can survive and that Cortana’s plan works.
Speaking of music, this level is like a “best of” album, like 80% of CE’s best tracks appear in this level, and the tone shifts perfectly between cold and lonely, to motivational, to triumphant, to......Covenant Dance, to tense and creepy, and so on, it has such a varied range of sounds and emotions and each track is perfectly used in its respective gameplay section.
Watching the flood and Covenant fight each other to death/blasting through them both is so satisfying, and the sentinels, while very simple, still prove to be a good tertiary enemy faction and it’s fun to watch them also fight the flood and covenant. This is when CE really throws the book at you and lets you put all of your skills and knowledge from the game so far to the test, especially since you have 3 times as many enemies and no allies alive to back you up. You’re all alone, it’s cold and dark, the whole universe is now at stake, and it’s all up to you to blast through everything in your way to figure out how to destroy Halo.
There is plenty more that can be said about this level. But honestly. I’ll just give it an S-tier ranking and call it a day.
It does make me wonder why there are few if any video essays on YT on the depth of which you described this level.
Such a mastercraft in game design while not perfect certainly deserves a more detailed analysis such as yours & not a superficial surface explanation as most do.
Really great comment. People who don't appreciate the latter levels of Halo CE appear to lack imagination and inference. They don't appreciate subtlety. For instance, another thing in Halo CE is that you begin to see fewer and fewer jackals, and eventually none in Keyes and the Maw. This is because the Flood is changing the atmosphere (as Guilty Spark points out in the Library), and jackals don't have shielding or respirators like MC, elites, and grunts.
Subtlety in games reached a peak in Half Life and Halo CE and has been dying out ever since.
@@malceum it's been years and years and I never made that connection holy shit. RIP CE Jackals lmao
14:45 as a kid it always confused me why this one room with the creepy Library Suite ambience has nothing but unarmed human Flood forms, until I replayed it years later and realized it's the same room where you last left Fireteam Zulu on Assault on the Control Room...
If this is true then you've just connected the dots on something that I've too pondered for years, jesus.
That's why offscreen deaths are so much creepier than onscreen ones. You never know what truly was their fate until you recover their bodies; or what's left of them, but in this case they suffered a much uglier fate than death.
That canyon is also the last area in the game where Marines can be seen fighting Covenant.
Wouldn't they have been picked up along with the Chief? Did the pelican to evac them get shot down by covies?
@@ShadowDragon-cw7wb It's possible it was shot down, or the Flood invaded the area before the Pelican arrived, since by the time the events of Assault on the Control Room have occurred, the Covenant had already fucked around and accidentally released the Flood from containment.
16:18
"Soon the Great Journey will begin."
"But when it does.... The weight of your heresy will stay your feet."
"And you shall be left behind."
20:00, Really epitomizes that last push of this stage. Master Chief is all alone in the night, fighting his way through hordes of enemies with dim chances of success. I like how it contrasts with the first time that he visits this place, it is daytime, having squads of backup, facing a known enemy and having powerful weapons at his disposal, the UNSC virtually wipes out the opposition without much effort . The second time, Master Chief is isolated in the dark, now being threatened by an unpredicatable foe that is the flood and he is still facing the hostile Convenant, but now in disarray due to the parasites, warping the battlefield to a fight for survival instead of a tactical advance. At times its best to run than being outnumbered and now the Chief has to scavenge weapons to ensure his survival, remembering that his last time, he was armed to the teeth and with an army to back him up.
Great comment. There’s a combat section in the underground part, but then you have to slowly walk through the long tunnels that you previously had rolled through in a tank with your marine buddies, and there’s a moment of silence between that and when the music starts. But once it does, and “Final Run” pops up, you realize just how alone you are. It’s such a great moment amplified by the music, which is also being re-contextualized after it was used to great affect during your sneaky sniper rescue operation with your squad...they’re all gone too. Nobody is left, just flood, sentinels, Covenant, all hostile, and it’s cold and dark and you just learned that the whole universe is at stake. I think what’s great about the music in this part is that it starts off quiet and cold feeling, but ramps up and gets more motivational when the synth, drums, bass, and (Marty’s) vocals are all playing together, making you accept your loneliness and march forward regardless to get the job done.
@@EmDub01 Awesome observations. Reading it sent shivers down my spine, just as you said the music masterfully creates the ambient of the situation. Liked how you contrast the Truth & Reconciliation mission with this one. The game really does a great job in making each mission more isolated.
"Do you have any idea what that bastard almost made you do?!"
"Yes. Activate Halo's defenses and destroy the Flood. Which is why we brought the Index to the Control Center."
"You mean this?"
"A construct in the core? That is absolutely unacceptable!"
"Sod off!!"
"I shall purge you at once!"
"You sure that's a good idea?"
"Oh. Ho-how dare you?! I'll!"
"Do what? I have the Index! You can just float and sputter!"
"Enough! The Flood is spreading. If we activate Halo's defenses, we can wipe them out."
You have no idea how this ring works, do you? Halo doesn't destroy flood, it destroys their food! Humans, Covenant, whatever.”

Covenant Dance
Yesss, thank you for the time stamp. I was looking for this one
The covenant dance sounds really cool
Opening suite and Under cover of night too
One of the absolute best parts of CE’s soundtrack
@@EmDub01 on a pale horse and Rock anthem for saving the world too
Eyyo my man shido what ya doin here?
Combat Evolved has hands down the best soundtrack out of all Halo games for me.
20:00, What an awesome song!
I was killing a group of covies and a grunt was running away in terror. This played just as I gunned him down. It made me feel something like pity. I though, "Poor guy, all that distance and time, a life lived just to die here, alone, absolutely horror, in pain, in a pool of his own blood, brutally murdered in a war he never asked for for a cause he doesn't even understand. I'm sorry. Sleep well, soldier, you've done your best."
It's like music porn but 10x better
@@Mortablunt You already commented that. And it's the top comment.
My favourite of all time
6:52
Cortana: ''Here's the pulse gener.. *Pulse generator deplete sound*''
Me: ''F*ckin don't have time for this...''
+Cyborg Mark VI id still have time for them in halo 6 though haha
Cortana: *keeps talking non-stop, like the robot she is*
Go in to blow overload the generator... kill all aliens in the room. ROOM IS EMPTY... blows up generator (Cortana saying "That'll do it" in the background) immediately 50 flood guys spawn in the room and exit hallway 3 of which have rocket launchers.
I love the part at 1:06 it's not heard anywhere else in the entire halo series and it's hidden away from dialogue, kinda cool but wish it was heard more because it really inspires mystery with fear
Supposedly it's part of Dust and Echoes played in reverse
It has a metroid-ish vibe tbh...
True it's fits perfectly. this sound effect also appeared in puppet combos backrooms game.
It's an important piece because it highlights the impact of the Master Chief's decision in choosing to trust Cortana, given his limited technical data concerning the reality-shattering enemy he encountered for two levels, and no other known method was explained to stop this menacing parasite. He made an appropriately timed decision given the limited knowledge and confusion of the entire exasperated situation.
The music when Cortana says "you have no idea how this ring works do you?" Always sends chills down my spine.
Under cover of night sounded amazing. It would be awesome of Marty came back to halo for halo 6.
Caleb Fletcher It's definitely up there as one of the best of the first three. That saying something as the trilogy had so many good tracks.

Mortablunt damn that’s sad I laughed cause I imagined it in slow mo of the gun with a grunt birthday skull on
Look out for the little guys
The fact that the Grunts are a slave race to the Covenant makes it even more tragic.
Man this game is pure art. Aging like some fine wine.
omg, I remember playing halo when I was 6, played with my brother and my dad, so much nostalgia that will cherish in my mind forever.
This picture is fantastic!
The soundtrack for this mission suits the atmosphere and story so good. It starts of with tracks that sound upbeat and heroic similar to how missions were before the flood appeared. Middle section sounds like a war with a darker and more depressing tone , also makes you feel more vulnerable. The last few tracks makes you feel isolation, despair and an urge to reach your goal. This mission is my favourite in the entire franchise. It has so much going on and the atmosphere is just incredible. The soundtracks by themselves are great and I'm actually not bothered by the mission length.
Dude, On behalf of all the Fans of Halo, and more importantly The ones for the Music... Thank you for uploading these, We'd never get to hear them unless playing the game if it weren't for you. Thank you
10:15 That moment when you get on the first bridge and see flood on one side vs covenant on your side killing each other
xxsnpiedvv snip man the memories. Halo 1 was legendary
I have no idea why they didn't release this part by itself as it's own separate track. I've been looking everywhere for it.
And seeing the flood jumping across the bridge in the moonlight. Incredible

20:00 Final run...
My favorite part of the level, along with 16:16 when you hijack a banshee and start flying through the snowfall and evade the barrage of Covenant fire.
Long live Bungie
I personally really like Two Betrayals
The intro cutscene alone is pure gold and such good lines from Cortana and Spark
Ambience: The night time of the snowy canyon is fantastic
Music: So many good pieces used along the level and great music moments like when Under Cover of Night kicks in for the Final Run oh my god
I honestly think it’s really cool to traverse the path of Assault on the Control Room completely backwards with a totally different objective.
Admittedly it is repetitive, but that’s because the layout is as repetitive as it was on AotCR not because we traverse it backwards I think that’s kinda genius
But the backwards route works and mitigates the repetitiveness because now the Flood is here, and that’s the other great mission element.
Four way combat amongst sentinels, Covenant, the Flood l, and you; it is wayy different than the waves of Covenant in AotCR as you punch your way through the mess and for me it makes up for the repetitive rooms that you already traversed through a couple missions ago
I do think they 100% should’ve lowered the amount of Rocket Launcher Flood forms cuz 13 of them is a little absurd but I honestly don’t really mind, I think it’s hilarious rather than infuriating
7:47
I entered this room and before watching them I started hearing
Covenant screaming and gun fire
And the flood is wining
I still remember Truth dialog in Halo 2
"You were right to focus your attention on the Flood"
Naaa man the covenant doesn't just "focus their attention"
The flood was slaughtering the covenant
They had no choice but to be forced to deal with them. If you did nothing and just watch the battles between the covenant and the Flood, most of the time the Flood won overwhelmingly
23:47 is my favorite, especially when I remember the frustration I got when I kept getting slaughtered in legendary
demons & heretics = most intense theme song in gaming history. RIP flood
That's the CEA remix. This one is Devils Monsters :)
The flood music is nightmare for Halo players , when you playing halo for the first time.
Thanks king for this great work.

Around 20:00 this video sound track sends chills down my spine. I remember my friend Dylan and I 10 years ago staying awake at 2:00am and the words “Final Run” came on the screen. Definitely an epic part of the game’s campaign
Me too! The Final Run was the most epic video game moment for me until I played big team battle on Halo 2
Best Halo mission of all time! On par with Quarantine Zone, The Covenant, and Assault on Control Room! (In my opinion)
