I love that there's a running joke with the Nomai trying really hard to source all their materials without depleting the Hearthian planet because they saw they were probably gonna evolve into sentience and they'd need metals and shit... and then the Hearthians just went to space using wood.
I think the reason why Hearthians use wood is because the Nomai took enough resources that they don't have much of anything else. I mean, their planet is hollow. There's just not that much left.
Voice acting isn't always an improvement to the characterization of people. Sometimes you just want to voice act them yourself and imagine what they sound like, which usually fits better than scrapped together VA that goes against what you would think the character would sound like. If they casted everything perfectly then sure, but I think it has a chance to make the game slightly better, with a much greater chance of making it significantly worse.
Plus some characters are characterized super well, like Riebeck. You know he's scared of space and you know why he's there because you find notes that detail his progression through planets. Plus, he teaches you that there's actually a structural integrity meter on the scout, which is helpful.
I agree: sometimes reading well written dialogue is more immersive than even a well acted voice line. One example would be Night in the Woods. Extremely good character writing, character design and animation make it fascinatingly clear what the individual characters would sound like. Watch any two let's plays of the game and it's almost guaranteed the players are going for the same voice. Sometimes a sketchy drawing is more interesting than an overworked hyper realistic painting because it's fun when some things are only implied and your brain fills in the blanks. This fascination would be lost if the game simply had voice actors doing the lines, even good ones. Plus, in Outer Wilds all the Nomai writing would either have to be voiced as well (which would take away from the mystery and give away characterization that you're supposed to slowly piece together) or only the hearthians get voice acting which would make the Nomai texts seem less important, even skippable.

As much as voice acting would be cool, not sure how it'll work in the game. It might be more distracting and I personally would read the subtitles anyway XD As for the character personalities, it's actually cool that you'll learn more about Nomai characters and connect to them than those that you actually see in the game :D Lastly, autopilot not being perfect is a good thing to me. Nothing in the game is given to you. You have to earn them and use them correctly :) Also, the game is mostly a simulation so most likely it'll be really hard to actuallly program an auto-pilot with auto-avoidance.
yeah, not sure about voice acting.. Maybe for the cassette players you find that are from other hearthian explorers, so you can listen to it while you are still moving around and the characters who you talk to, but I often just read the subtitles because it's faster and with the amount of dialog in the "tutorial" part I think it could make it too long to get to space. but for the most part you will be reading nomai writtings so there could be some robotic voice coming from the translator or your character could read them out loud but it would get old pretty quick. I think the way they do it in the DLC solves the issue of "too much reading" that some people have much better. Also the auto-pilot avoidance system not working is told to you by slate even though most people find it out the hard way.. but I think overall it's a funny thing, I watched many streamers play the game it's always a funny moment.
Voice acting could work if it was just for Hearthians. All 3 races in outer wilds primarily communicate by different means. Hearthians use audio logs, Nomai use writing, the Strangers use films (although all 3 methods are used by each race).
Autopilot isn't broken. It just doesn't have safety measures. Your ship is largely constructed of wood. You think Hearthians care about safety? lmao. There's even dialogue that mentions this.
I just finished Outer Wilds last week. Amazingly good game. Good thing I wrapped it up so U could watch this video. Good shit. Did you play Echoes of the Eye, the DLC? It’s as good as the main game, so many fantastic moments and discoveries. Highly recommend if you haven’t checked it out yet.
There's a way easier solution to getting through the cactus building on ash twin. Also hard disagree on the voice acting take. I much prefer sticking to just reading Also #2 autopilot draws a straight line to where you are going so when you fly into the sun thats kinda on you
I think he's straight up wrong about the first part, its more fun that way even though you die a lot. A lot of things in outer wilds is more fun not knowing every solution to a puzzle, but what does suck about this game is a large portion of the end where there is nothing left to explore and only the hardest puzzles left, that was the part of the game I did not enjoy. Voice acting and characters however I agree with him. Each character in this game was unbelievably forgettable and extremely static. Voice acting wouldn't be enough, but it would certainly help. But I can safely say as someone who beat the game the characters mostly felt lifeless, it needed fewer and for them to actually do more than sit. Overall easily one of the weakest parts of outer wilds. And strong agree on the last part, but I'd argue the autopilot is something better left unused anyway.
When i first went to dark bramble and encountered the anglerfish i was wondering what the light was and approached it tentatively, and then it appeared out of the darkness and scared me SO FUCKING BAD and hit the boosters on going backwards and i hit a wall and fell back towards it and died
Voice Acting is literally subjective thing and preferences, the best would be having VA but also allowing players to turn it OFF, but in my opinion in this case it's not needed, Outer Wilds really don't need voice acting because it's helps to focus on yourself and gameplay/information rather than listening to someone, this game is not about good written characters (tho can't say they are too bad, they're more like just basic need to be added so the game doesn't feel empty) it's about exploration and being alone with yourself most of your time doing your things while dying and learning/discovering something new P.S. and yes, i personally agree with the idea that you should leave the voices to your imagination (in such cases as this game) as you imagine them instead of other people creating their versions of them for you to hear without immersing yourself into it with your imagination, and that's not about being lame or lack of work/effort and budget.
4:47 LOL, I mean, you did try the hardest possible solution to get through that area. If you get there as the sand is still lowering, you can just walk through on top of the sand. No cactus to worry about. ^_^ Did you ever do the DLC? It's fantastic.
Dude i just started watching your videos today and you are my new favorite youtuber, idk how you do it or what you do but you keep me interested the entire time without making me feel overloaded with information Also play the dlc, i will not elaborate
Outer Wilds is seriously such a fascinating game that only works because it's one of the most well-designed games out there. I have an in-depth game design analysis video on my channel that I think you'd like and explains why it's so well-designed. It hits on every design point and how ingenious the game is.
In regards to the voice acting, I do see your point. When I played, the only two characters who I felt connected to were Feldspar and Solanum. All the recurring characters you read about sort of fell by the wayside for me as I was prioritising puzzle-solving that by the time I realised there were characters in the text I'd already lost track of who was who. I don't personally think voice-acting would be the best solution (and apparently there's a very good voice-acting mod you can use), but thinking on it now I do think the game would benefit if each Nomai had a unique colour to help you remember who is who, as it took me a long while to remember names. And as someone else said, the DLC has barely any reading. They use these crazy things called pictures.
This is one of the games I put aside in a specific category called Experience Games. It usually has the essence of misdirection or complete surprise of where the plot is going. Another factor is the breadcrumb/no direction choke. It's a good style in many cases when you have faith in the player to comfortably progress. This, Subnautica, Shadow of the Colossus, Majora's Mask, Red Dead Redemption are a select few that are in this category because you are very aware by the end that you'll never get to play it for the first time again.
I really hope you have the vods for this, i love your videos and wouldn't mind watching your experience of this game. Hope you enjoy the dlc (and record it) when you play it!

I had a lot of fun playing through the Outer Wilds, but some of the puzzles I had to google the solutions to. I had gathered all clues but just couldn't piece the information together at times, which is more of an issue with me rather than the game itself
yeah i know what you mean when you say that the names are hard to remember. but i honestly dont think it matters to remember their names, just the info that comes with their dioulgue
All these comments saying "Autopilot is terrible on purpose". No? It's not terrible, or janky, it's simple. Autopilot does exactly what you tell it to. If it flew you into the sun, it's because you told it to fly to a place on the other side of the sun, and by golly it's going to take you straight there.
Yeah he was complaining that the auto pilot was doing that instead of navigating a safe rout around the sun and the other comments are all saying what you are is that the auto pilot doing that is by design
I gotta heavy disagree on the voice acting tidbit honestly, and I can't really put my finger on why. I truthfully just think voice acting would have detracted from the atmosphere, I'm glad it was just text.
Played this game the first time I tried weed. Didn’t know the controls but had played No Man’s Sky. Flew around the entire solar system multiple times in pants shitting panic just trying not to crash. Mentally screaming while narrowly avoiding planets at break neck speed. It was amazing.
Just like the rest of the game, the characterization is there but you have to go look for it. Multiple characters personalities get conveyed either through dialogue or other people’s dialogue, a lot of the time you have to go out and come back to get more options. Gabbro is a laid back and sometimes lazy hearthian that values the little things in life like taking time to relax and reflect. Chert is a smart hearthian that is the only one who gets an existential crisis from the universe ending just like you. Esker is the elder type that is lonely and wants hearthian interaction. Slate is a explosion loving guy and inventor that innovated the space exploration program, etc etc i think you get the point. I think the reason feldspar stood out to you as compared to the other characters is because most of the characters say his name with a type of respect and reverence that is hard to forget.
This is a game I WISH I could play for the first time again. It’s almost impossible to play again bc you already know how to beat it and there’s no tangible progression haha
okay you're told that there is no collision avoidance on the autopilot, so when you put an astral body between you and your destination that's YOUR fault
Also I would like to do a recomendation. Play the DLC, in a lil wood cavin theres and exposition which will led you to the DLC, its a really beautifull experience fo the same discovery level as outer.
This might be a super hot take, but I couldn't really bring myself to finish Outer Wilds. I know the feeling of coming across things randomly all too well and I understand the importance of it, however the lack of reward for finding new things was my issue. I would find something cool and be excited that I would find something to actually allow me to progress only to find it was a random conversation between 2 Nomai. I wouldn't say the game was bad, not by any means, but something about it made it feel unrewarding for me.
Title makes it sound like it's pure only gameplay when it's an actual well-put together review, maybe change the title to something more of that nature. Recently discovered this Channel, loved it and hope it does well👍
Outer Wilds on some levels seems to be about facing and overcoming fears. So I hope one day you can find a way. The ending is beautiful. If it helps, I believe in you.
I would say try your best to swallow it and try anyway, the reward will feel even greater But if that's *really* not an option and if you're playing on PC, there is a mod that removes the anglers. But that does cheapen Dark Bramble a tonne so it should reallh be your absolute last resort
Outer wilds scratched my subnautica itch that I had for years, and more. The endgame could use a bit more balancing though. The stuff you have to do in one loop for the 'true' ending is too much and too tough. An amazing experience overall though. I still hate ash twin
What do you mean 'true' ending? I never had too much difficulty doing the intended ending but I can see how it would be difficult if you only ever used auto pilot. Leading up to and getting the ending gives you a lot of practice to traverse all the areas you need to to finish it I believe.
@@UnrealJosh I'm talking about the ending where you have to warp into the ember twin core from ash twin, then go to the crashed spaceship in dark bramble to put in the coordinates to the eye. You didn't struggle on that? I failed to successfully warp into the core from the ash twin multiple times, and had to reset with each failure cuz not doing so first try doesn't leave enough time to get to the spaceship in dark bramble, and each failure meant waiting for the ash on the twin to drain out on every attempt. And even when that did go my way I often got caught by the piranhas in dark bramble, or failed put the coordinates in in time cuz I went too slowly to avoid alerting those same piranhas. Lastly, autopilot not being perfect is a good thing to me.
Calm down dog it was a joke
YAY more Outer Wilds content!
Watching someone else play this game for the first time is SUCH an experience!
It's always awesome seeing new people play this game
as an italian, i can confirm, those are our predecessors.
There's a way easier solution to getting through the cactus building on ash twin.
Also hard disagree on the voice acting take. I much prefer sticking to just reading
Also #2 autopilot draws a straight line to where you are going so when you fly into the sun thats kinda on you
I think he's straight up wrong about the first part, its more fun that way even though you die a lot.
Voice Acting is literally subjective thing and preferences, the best would be having VA but also allowing players to turn it OFF, but in my opinion in this case it's not needed, Outer Wilds really don't need voice acting because it's helps to focus on yourself and gameplay/information rather than listening to someone, this game is not about good written characters (tho can't say they are too bad, they're more like just basic need to be added so the game doesn't feel empty) it's about exploration and being alone with yourself most of your time doing your things while dying and learning/discovering something new
P.S. and yes, i personally agree with the idea that you should leave the voices to your imagination (in such cases as this game) as you imagine them instead of other people creating their versions of them for you to hear without immersing yourself into it with your imagination, and that's not about being lame or lack of work/effort and budget.
1:35 😂😂 I wish I watched your stream I fully respect your first flight decision
4:47 LOL, I mean, you did try the hardest possible solution to get through that area. If you get there as the sand is still lowering, you can just walk through on top of the sand. No cactus to worry about. ^_^ Did you ever do the DLC? It's fantastic.
I love how his only criticism is how he doesn’t like reading.
Hope you play/upload a separate video on the dlc, it’s definitely worth your time.
There's a mod coming out btw which implements voice acting into the game
play the dlc. it's more of the base game but creepier and somehow more polished design wise. also no more reading so that should be a plus
Dude i just started watching your videos today and you are my new favorite youtuber, idk how you do it or what you do but you keep me interested the entire time without making me feel overloaded with information
Also play the dlc, i will not elaborate
You should play the DLC aswell, it's as long and awesome as the main game!
Holy shit, you are not kidding about in depth!!
Hypnospace Outlaw too
you just pump out banger after banger man, can't wait for the next vid
4:53 The autopilot is intended.... but great video! I really liked it!
0:22 I really liked the *Lapis philosophorum* in the background at some parts in this video
Outer wilds and disco Elysium and superliminal came out the same year Kreygasm
I really hope you have the vods for this, i love your videos and wouldn't mind watching your experience of this game. Hope you enjoy the dlc (and record it) when you play it!
I’m glad you played it and enjoyed! I want everyone to enjoy and play this game so I’m off to nag some other poor soul to play this game lol.
chert - plays the drums, gets existential by the end of the cycle
gabbro - chill time buddy
slate - space engi
riebeck - afraid of space
esker - funny whistle man
I had a lot of fun playing through the Outer Wilds, but some of the puzzles I had to google the solutions to. I had gathered all clues but just couldn't piece the information together at times, which is more of an issue with me rather than the game itself
This is the first time I hear the Sonny Boy OST apart from listening to it by myself!
yeah i know what you mean when you say that the names are hard to remember. but i honestly dont think it matters to remember their names, just the info that comes with their dioulgue
I haven't watched this yet, but I can tell you all of those people are right.
I can’t agree more I can’t imagine this game with voice acting it would ruin it
5:43 that guy has way better teeth then us
Now.. PLAY ECHOES OF THE EYE!!! (The dlc)
You want to play a challenging game? Play Spelunky 2. Don't judge by it's cover. Just buy it and play it! Tons of secrets and so addicting
There’s a mod that will add voice acting made by the community so hopefully that will help with the dialogue
Autopilot sucks on purpose, they actually make a few jabs at it with Slate
I thought I was the only one that got outer worlds and wilds mixed up
Conveniently I’ve been considering getting Outer Wilds
Played this game the first time I tried weed. Didn’t know the controls but had played No Man’s Sky. Flew around the entire solar system multiple times in pants shitting panic just trying not to crash. Mentally screaming while narrowly avoiding planets at break neck speed. It was amazing.
You should try The Outer Worlds for a future vid
Only remembering feldspar is the most tragically in-character outcome. Meemaw just wants a break from the fame
5:14 that’s an intended feature… kinda, certain NPC’s will talk to you about that if you bring it up
Youve talked about good games enough, im in.
This is a game I WISH I could play for the first time again. It’s almost impossible to play again bc you already know how to beat it and there’s no tangible progression haha
"Mute the tab, and let the video play out."
I already do that, Jay
okay you're told that there is no collision avoidance on the autopilot, so when you put an astral body between you and your destination that's YOUR fault
you forgot the DLC, it’s such a good thing to play, and if you get the chance, play it
Please do the dlc it absolutely blew my mind
I always get Outer Wilds and Outer Worlds confused 😂
its sad because they launched around the same time, easily confused, both in space, but one is infinitely better than the other (and sold less)
The DLC is better than the base game imo. Trust!
Dude you should play outer wilds
Fr fr
the first time i played this i was on 500mg of edibles lol. good times
this game is amazing high but also maybe harder to figure out what’s happening
I've already played and beat it and am glad that you played it!
YEAAA THE SONNY BOY OST? bro i love you
3:09 I wish I knew that before playing Outer Wilds. :( Made it up though by playing the DLC blind.
now echoes of the eye
I couldn't shut up about this game and its expansion DLC. It is a truly fucking amazing game, and it's such a unique experience.
I was fucking hoping for this video :'33
Also I would like to do a recomendation.
Play the DLC, in a lil wood cavin theres and exposition which will led you to the DLC, its a really beautifull experience fo the same discovery level as outer.
i appreciate the mob psycho music
auto pilot is a feature.
5:00 they made it like that on purpose the first guy you meet says it
Title makes it sound like it's pure only gameplay when it's an actual well-put together review, maybe change the title to something more of that nature. Recently discovered this Channel, loved it and hope it does well👍
Auto pilot is janky on purpose, so people won't relly on it too much. The npcs literally tell you it could fly you into the sun
About autopilot... head engineer told about it's quirk...
THAT END CLIP THO
ur so entertaining u deserve at least one million subs
As an Arizonan, I can confirm we are basically greater las vegas
I really wish I could finish outer wilds, it’s one of my favourite games but because of the anglers and my thallasophobia I can’t :(
Outer Wilds on some levels seems to be about facing and overcoming fears. So I hope one day you can find a way. The ending is beautiful. If it helps, I believe in you.
I second what Roger said. I believe in you.
I would say try your best to swallow it and try anyway, the reward will feel even greater
But if that's *really* not an option and if you're playing on PC, there is a mod that removes the anglers.
This ending is my only real complaint about this game as it left a bitter aftertaste in an otherwise top tier game.
@@st.altair4936 I never struggled with that ending no I usually completed all the steps with time to spare completing it in around 15min or less and I think a loop is 26min and that's from me not really using the boosters much in the dark bramble so I'm surprised you had such a different experience
@@st.altair4936 it's not hard to get to the core at all, you can sleep at campfires to speed up time so you don't have to wait, and you won't get caught by the piranhas if you don't move.
git good bro
I love the sonny boy and mob ost
One of the greatest games ever played
i played it on lsd, best experience ever, best game ever.
Now you just need to do the dlc.
This will be one of my favourite games of all time
it would just be weird to listen to a blue alien talk to u in english
weirder than reading what they say in english
