    I've never been able to hit good consistant pinch harmonics, I use a pretty thick pick and I've been told that might be a reason why

    • @ShadowMantraSteve
      @ShadowMantraSteve  5 років тому +1

      Medium to thick picks should be fine - I use normally 1mm to 1.25mm. It's more likely how your thumb is touching the string. It may be not hitting a node which will cause a normal note to come out. Keep practising and you'll eventually find and get a feel for where to place your picking hand on the string to get better harmonics. The easier ones usually sit between the pickups. The nearer you are to the bridge the harder it will be to get them to ring out clearly. Good luck!

    As every newer person attempts to play a pinch harmonic and utterly fails 20 out of 23 attempts.
    Takes me a few minutes to get re-adjusted to my guitar before I can even consistently pull pinch harms, but I do not practice any where near as much as I should, so... Thank god for head phones, heh he... uhhgggg

    • @ShadowMantraSteve
      @ShadowMantraSteve  5 років тому +3

      Keep practising, you'll get there eventually. It will click eventually and you'll start pulling them off more consistently. Gain and distortion definitely help them ring out better, but it is doable with a clean tone.

    What about string gauge? 9 vs 10 vs 11. How does the gauge affect harmonics and ease of doing it?

      I tend to find slightly looser strings easier to play harmonics. I usually have a set of 10s for D standard/drop C

    Hey man -- so, I am a long time bassist but I've been having a blast learning to play Gojira etc. on a 6 string. I've been struggling for probably 6 months with pinch harmonics (e.g. those used in 'Where Dragons Dwell' in case I have the terminology wrong). Success, finally. Now to work on the rest. Thank you for the education as usual. \m/

    Can you use slip harmonics instead of pinch harmonics in certain situations? Like for example if you're playing like some L.o.G Redneck, instead of playing a pinch harmonic on the 10th fret, can you use the slip method instead? Are there examples of song where this is misinterpreted for a pinch harmonic but yet people use different methods? Would absolutely love to see a video on this!

    • @ShadowMantraSteve
      @ShadowMantraSteve  Рік тому +1

      If you can find somewhere to do one that matches the pitch then sure why not! I can't think of any examples of the top of my head where slip harmonics are used instead of pinches though, it's not something I've seen used much to be honest.

      @@ShadowMantraSteve This technique has really not been explored as much as the other ones. I actually remember a mate of mine showing me a "slip harmonic" for the first time. And what he said to me was, "You do realise, you can do *squealies* without doing a proper pinch". And when he showed me, it felt like my whole world had opened up as a guitarist. I just thought WTF man, you can do "that" instead of "this". I know they are basically two different techniques, but you can seriously get similar sounds out of both. And if it works, why not? I find pinch harmonics SO much more difficult to place into a rhythm section than the other way. In solos it's kinda easy, but on the lower strings in a fast paced sections, that is pure skills!
      I think someone really needs to explore this (maybe me lol).. Thanks for the reply man, it's insightful!

      @@mitiasmirnovmusic when you really dive into the physics of it - standing waves/nodes/anti nodes, they are doing the same thing. The downside is you can only really hit slip harmonics where you can play a natural harmonic so you might not always get the exact pitch you're after. Still a useful technique to know though!

      I had to do a quick bit of research as I didn't know the name, but it appears to be when you get the original note still ringing out underneath the harmonic. It's played similar to a pinch harmonic but very lightly using the thumb to not stop the original note underneath. Hope that makes sense!

      As Amerikanskiy Hardbass said, pinch and palm harmonics can be played on any fret. It's all about splitting the string up into half, thirds, quarters, fifths and so on. On an open string the 12th fret is half, the 7th fret is a third and the 5th fret is a quarter. If you press down on the third fret the 15th fret is then half way, 10th is a third and 8 fret is a quarter. Hopefully that helps a bit too!

    • @ShadowMantraSteve
      @ShadowMantraSteve  5 років тому +1

      It shouldn't matter too much. If the natural harmonics ring out okay then pinch harmonics will be fine too. A lot of it is down to technique, and also a bit of having the guitar set up properly - not having the pickups too far away from the strings mainly as that will weaken the signal. Practise is the main thing really.
