Stick with it guys. I struggled for ages. Get the harmonic sound, then move up and down between your pick ups to find where you need to be. For instance on bottom E on 6th fret for me it is about 2cm off my bridge pickup. You will get it, stay with it!
Damn I just discovered this technique today and wanted to try immediately.. one issue I hadn't an electric neither a pick. I grabbed my guitar, watched every guide, tried and retried till I left no stone returned and was close to throwing the towel. I was laying on the bed, dark room, lost on my thoughts trying for the umpteenth time the ding harmonic when suddenly it clicked, can't explain the blissful relief, it was amazing. Afterwards I had plenty time to fully understand how I pulled it of, here's my notes: Key Tip: the sounds emits when the string vibrates and gently touches your thumb. Reasons why it doesn't work for you all could be: not bringing close the thumb to the pick (there should be a tiny gap) ; applying to much pressure with the thumb, hence note is muted; not resting the finger immediately after plucking the string with the pick; lastly not striking the string string enough to make the vibration.
you’ve probably figured it out by now, but turn the volume slider on the amp and your guitar all the way up. I’ve spent like 5 hours today trying to figure out why it wasn’t making the screech and it turns out it was just my volume.
I have been playing for literal YEARS and have never once gotten this down and the first time I tried separating the down stroke and touching my thumb to the string I got a pinch harmonic. I'm going to need to practice this more to ever actually play this in a song but oh my god this got me to actually do it!
Years back there was a tutorial in a mag, spiderwebs by no doubt tab, it explained PH , i got the thing straight away, struck string with plectrum and thumb at the same time and that was it for me
Excellent info, you have very high action. Can I get similar pinch with less action? And what about pick thickness? Mostly thick picks give good results.
My string action is quite low now (you can see in this video). So, yes: you can do pinch harmonics with low action. See this: ua-cam.com/video/dlpjMnghOGQ/v-deo.html
25 years ago my friend was doing those pinch harmonics and didn't know how to show me. I think he just didnt want to show me so I had to figure it out by myself.
This is the best I can achieve in 20 years of trying to get a clear pinched harmonic---bit slow & clumsy ---but extended index finger method does work ----try it ?
You're not alone. I've been playing 20 years, and I gave up 18 ago because the non-video explanation in "Rock Guitar for Dummies" was useless. I also tried five other videos on UA-cam, but this was the only one that showed me what I've been doing wrong.
Thanks for explaining the 3rd part (brief contact). That has been my problem, and seems to be missing from many lessons out there. How important is the tone with the the PH?
doesn't work for me :( i bounce my thumb and nothing, still sounds like a normal note. I am trying to play a d note on the A string (5th fret 2nd low string) . Tried it open and with other strings, and no dice. You make it look easy, what am i doing wrong. Do you need a special amp for this? I don't have money for a $1000 tube amp. Using a fender mustang modelling amp. Tried everything. nota
Don’t just touch the string with your thumb because it would probably choke out the movement of the string. Find the right spot, change the angle of pick then graze it with your thumb.
i have a cheap beginner guitar and when i touch the string it doesnt make the harmonic but just stays the same tone. Do i have to upgrade my gear or is it in the technique?
Your guitar hum bucker is really sensistive---I have failed to pinch the harmonic --however if I extend my picking INDEX finger 2 inches above the pick --then pick with plastic AND tip of index finger SIMULTANEOUSLY---I get superb harmonics in most places --not prefect --but I do not understand how your thumb AND pick work together -----so I use my method --not great --but I still get a loud hi -pitched SQUEAL 1
Very good information bro, thanks. Can i mention that pinch armonic will activate a different note depending on x/3 of the longitud of the string, between note pressed and the bridge. Nice lessn of motions
How in the actual f**k does he get it to sound that LOUD and so crisp and clear and the harmonic actually plays out like he strummed a string by just touching the string after strumming…. I can do pinch harmonics alright but I can’t get how they make them sound like THAT. I understand the better the equipment is it’s just gonna sound better but still. If I do a pinch on the low e (tuned down to c or something low) and do the same note and everything else mine sounds like a normal pinch harmonic. There’s sounds like a ancient robot eagle squealing at planet shattering frequencies. It’s ridiculous lmfao I just wanna know if it’s a effect or a certain distortion pedal or if it’s all just me
I should just quit trying. I have been sitting here for three hours trying to do this, replaying the video, watching closely, I can't even do regular harmonics.
Never mind… lmfao right after I commented I started getting the sounds like he’s getting but it just doesn’t sound like it’s coming from a thousand plus dollar guitar and couple thousand dollar amp and pedals and everything known to metal
@@mriggs596 lol this dude learned all his chords just by randomly arranging his fingers up and down the fret board. And I mean obviously he learns it all by ear on his own or why else would he be on a YT video
This has always been one of the best channels for learning guitar for years now. It has stood the test of time.
Still can't do them

Dude, you and me both. I’m getting wrecked by them tonight. Can’t even accidentally make the sound, yet.

best tutorial for the pinch harmonics on guitar found online! great job and thank you!
I can’t even get the harmonic sound when i touch the string:(

Volume or gain 99 percent of the time@@Longmustache43
@@Longmustache43What if you can't play THAT loud?
Great video I've been struggling with pinch harmonics for a while. Breaking it down into three parts is a game changer!

Great lesson!! I'm still struggling to get them, it's very hard to do on the lower frets-3rd fret on low E string.
I looked up videos on this and I'm doing the same thing and nothing happens 😞
Sameee
when i hit it with my thumb there ois no sound

hi In my opinion, the type of guitar and active pick-up has a great effect on the correct sound
You are the best teacher out there I learned this so quick I searched hundreds of videos and didn’t get it 😮🎉
7 years of playing death metal, pinch harmonic is the one thing I still find it "hard"
Best. Guide. On. Pinch. Harmonics. Ever.
Thank you now I can play them very well
My jackson js 22 does not make that sound when I touch it with the thumb. I've tried hundreds of times. It has never done it once.
Check if the intonation of the guitar is accurate or not
@@Subhrocks1 What the fuck does that even mean?

Experienced the same thing :)
Will that work if the guitar is unplugged?
Or it needs a distortion effect for the squeal to be obvious?
The hero's journey starts today !

Only 10?
Been trying for 33 years
Figured that out quick, thx
Wow..he tells you straight..top lesson!
I wanna ask is there a budget amp that also sound good or every good amp is like expensive af
Thanks. This is exactally what was searching for.
Do u need to have it on distortion? Also, can it be done on an acoustic guitar?
Really good explanation, thank you
Does tuning have an effect on the ability to do this
Thanks for explaining the 3rd part (brief contact). That has been my problem, and seems to be missing from many lessons out there. How important is the tone with the the PH?

just fing did it. Needed to be up near the neck, and blam... everytime. I have a feeling its different for each guitar. I also maxed my gain
Pinch harmonic,do in the "A" string , is the real challenge
Same. The second I touch the string with my thumb like he does it mutes the note.

It is imposible to explain this better
Thanks a ton in how to not do harmonics. Subscribing you for learning more. Stay blessed
My problem is switching back and forth. Either all of them are normal sounding notes or all of them sound like harmonics
Lots of practice, it's quite subtle. A small move with the thumb, or a small adjustment with your wrist. Try alternating verrry slowwwly.
Great explanation, as always.
please help, I cant do it?
what amp setting is best for pinch harmonics?
Fully cranked😂
You even used the same lick in the introduction 😁
He reminds me of mr checkov from strar trek
still doesn’t work for me i dunno what i’m doing. i press my thumb on the string and it just stops playing obviously
The string still needs to vibrate, just ever so slightly, so try a lighter touch.
...and full gain/distortion on the amp.

It's like calculus... Lol
Ive been playing for years. I still havent come close to a pinch harmonic😂 even after watching videos
If you still can't do them, try turning up the volume on your guitar!

I finally made some progress watching this video.

Whenever I put my thumb on the string it just mutes it
Is your amp cranked to 10 😂🤪😂
Adam sandler jumpscare
XD at first it sounded like alarm
he was playing pinch harmonics so hard, that there is a dust under the strings. Probably it is from his fingers.
Bass-0 Treble -max. Volume - at least 6.
You'll get more mileage learning how to pluck harmonics. At home and on stage.
Perfect phs exist but no one could exactly tell you how to perform them! So dark 😅
Some mf clean user say they can't do that💀
Did you know Jimi hendrix can’t do pinch harmonics.

Love hearing how bad your intonation is, and that you can't tell they note is flat af, should totally be giving advice.
There are no lessons for guitar just develope your ear and you will master guitar instinctually the best teacher is your ears
