Whale Watching on Cape Breton Island

- August 10-13, 2023 -- I decided my best chance of seeing whales was off Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. To get there, I traveled up the scenic Cabot Trail, a road quite popular with motorcycle enthusiasts. I booked a trip out of Pleasant Bay with Captain Mark's Whale and Seal Cruise (www.whaleandsea...), and we spotted minke whales just offshore Pleasant Bay on my first day out. On my second day out (yes, I decided to go again :-), we had to travel quite a bit further and were rewarded with two pods of pilot whales. What a great trip.

I have only seen whales in the wild from an airplane. I would take friends (in a Piper Archer) to brunch south of San Jose and fly back up the coast. The whales were really big and could be seen making their way north. I cut across the bay over San Mateo to land back at Hayward. Fun times.
