Took me like a whole weekend to find out where that bass line was coming from. I searched everywhere. In my cupboards, my garage, I called my mom, nothing. And then I realised he dropped the low E to a C. As one does. Also that thumb advantage isnt fair.

Haha! It's so weird to see myself in one of your videos Tyler. Watching your Udemy and UA-cam channel grow last year was what inspired me to start teaching online, so thanks for that - it changed my life for the better. Just FYI - that picking pattern you highlighted in my video is just me looping the first four notes of the fingerpicking pattern that is applied to pretty much all of the chords (if my memory serves me well). I do mention to add the slap in after that part of the video :) All the best dude.
Ross, you've nailed it. Your right hand technique is just right, including extended wrist (not slamming it into the guitar) which is pretty much mandatory to get this sort of flow going.
John Mayer just made a TikTok where he explains his picking technique and even THEN I’m still needing to see other peoples video to learn how to do it xD tricky stuff
That's what brought me here! You gotta see Paul Davids's lesson on it. I got it down after a solid 4 hours, though still slower than the live version. Make sure you watch the *new* Paul Davids video, because he has an old one that is not as thorough or correct.
That wasn’t a tutorial. I don’t know what that was to be honest, if he wanted to teach it he could have but he didn’t he just said “make it flow” or something cheesy like that. I feel like he was just tryna dig up some old clout on TikTok

Definitely an essential part of this riff is using your thumb & index finger since you lose some of the voicing easily if using standard fingerpicking patterns

The one that this definitely helps with is to see that even high-level guitar players can make mistakes and play sloppy while learning a song. The hardest part of learning the guitar really does lie in frustration when you see people pull everything off perfectly, but we don't realise that they once too had the same problems that we do, they just overcame that and kept on trying.

If you search up John mayer live in San Francisco at the masonic, around the 17 minute mark he literally teaches how to play neon right before playing it
His tutorials are great, but he is a bit sloppy with playing the songs. it doesn't matter ofc because he still makes an incredibly accurate tutorial. The dude has a damn good ear for those little details.
It's so depressing to see how easily he transcribes Edit: hey this blew up. at the time i commented id only been playing a.few months. definetly gotta better grasp now of what hes doing but he is still has phenomenal ear.
There’s no way he could possibly learn this by ear this quick. He either already knows the song or he took time to edit out himself learning as he goes
This more than likely took him a few hours. He chopped it down to a 13 minutes video. He just happens to put a shit ton of work into his musical ability
you have no idea how much inspiration came from this video. you, the best guitarist i know, took time like this to learn a song that i wouldve thought came easy to such a god. but for 2 years ive dreamt of being able to play that song. and to this day you still make my dreams feel less impossible man
1. I've heard John himself talk about his weirdly long thumbs. 2. Even though it's not the exact same technique, John also uses his index nail to hit the string while doing the down motion. Just like using a pick. You can see this technique in "Stop this train" and "Heart of life". I suspect there's some of that here too. This technique adds this click sound which get combined with the slap.
Him: “That’s weird I don’t have grammarly and I don’t need it.” Grammarly who was about to give him 1,000,000 dollars so that he could promote their website: “You’ll regret that.”
I’m glad someone finally made something about this. If you want to see the correct technique, type in “how to play neon the right way” it’s the first video. I went through months of learning this technique and it is way more complex than you can imagine. You alternate the bass and g string with your thumb while getting the slap sound. I still can’t play it perfect after all this time but trust me it sounds so much better when you learn the right way.
I really appreciate him showing the hiccups in finding the notes and showing the little mistakes, it proves that even playing consistently for what I assume is 10+ years he isn't completely a master at guitar and that's really awesome. I know this video is old but still, appreciated!
It’s sad that he didn’t watch the “Cifra Club” class about this song. That guy is a genius, he just plays and teaches it perfectly. And it’s the live show version!
o tutorial do Leo é o melhor com certeza, mas ele esqueceu do thumb slap marcando o tempo! No meu canal tem 2 vídeos explicando direitinho como é a técnica da mão direita: /watch?v=j5A1D-sTjqE&t=
Thanks for posting a video showing the real struggles of learning certain songs. Nice to see someone much better than myself struggle until they get it as well
I feel like most people play this riff wrong (or not exactly right to be precise). I think as you said, examining the artist playing it live is the best way to go
I made a video with tabs trying to show how the right hand technique works for the acoustic version, it's the only correct one I've seen on youtube, here it is: /watch?v=5etpllTqiDM
I‘m from a pre UA-cam - even pre CD - generation. We had to learn our stuff from memory after being at a concert, vinyl records or tape. Sheet music was no help, as it either wasn‘t available or it was over simplyfied. But this oversimplification was the actual trick, that probably still works today even with highly detailed lessons: Just work out a simple version, get into the groove and flow and consciously add the more delicate and harder to play parts with time and practice. Fun fact: When you get a chance to talk the original artist in person and ask him or her about a part you had a hard time learning, he or she will most of the time start off with a simpler version, sometimes just skipping the more delicate parts, but sounding right anyway. And many of them have developed a much easier way to play their difficult stuff that you may‘ve had such a hard time learning. 😄
I'm starting to try learn this song now. This is how I interpreted the picking pattern from watching his Live in LA video at .25x speed: John only uses his thumb and index finger. His hand moves in a constant 16th note down-up-down-up pattern, with each note plucking a string. First he plucks the low E with his thumb while his hand is moving down, then the D string with his index finger while his hand is moving up, then brings his thumb up and plucks the G string while moving down again, B with index while hand is moving up, then repeat, either slapping or playing the low E string again (depending on which part of the song you're at). Basically, this song is hard as fuck.
John Mayer actually did a UA-cam shorts and I found it very helpful. A lot of people did not think it was helpful but I thought it was very nice seeing the man who created it teach it himself
@@coryCuc haven't seen Paul doing the whole thing including the intro and I A-B JM's and JHG's versions and not surprisingly, they matched with just a slight tempo difference 2 mins into the song.
Thanks for showing the process. Sometimes I just feel stupid when trying it by ear and not getting it. You gave me comfort that this is just a progress until you overcome.
Ya, I like how you mentioned at the end about John Mayer's thumb. He's one of my favorite artists and when I tried to learn one of his songs I realized the problem of my small hands and his hands are MASSIVE so he can do things like that. Just means I need to find work arounds like you did and take more time on it.
The second guy was playing the studio version which is still definitely 100% correct, just not what most people think of when they think of neon. Personally, I learned it by watching/listening to the "where the light is" version. Some quick tips for playing this - use only your thumb and index finger to pick, and slaps on either 1, or 1 and 3 on the low E string (tuned down to C). Take some time to get the finger picking down because if you start doing it wrong, it can be very hard to correct. Last tip is to stay loose, don't tense up. I still have trouble with this when playing it but it's very important for the picking
Good job bro, I wonder what it's like to be able to transcribe such a complex song by ear. As someone who doesn't have giant hands I remember the trouble this song gave me. But when I decided to practice it 3 years ago I did it with the belief that 1) with steady, hard practice I could play it exactly like Mayer, with my thumb holding down the root note of each chord - including the very last "WTF" one; and 2) that even though my hands were smaller, it was all just a matter of muscle memory in the end. About two months of mangling my own left hand, I finally got to play - slowly but steadily - this section (verse & chorus) "Mayer-style" with minimum buzzing. My beliefs were proving true: my hands were big *enough.* But, alas, my optimism proved to be premature. The very next part of the song (the "pre-chorus") has this [6x634x]. Now playing *that* with the thumb on the 6th fret was a prospect that had me question my genetics. I now know not everything can be overcome with practice. Not everything is my damn fault. Sometimes, it's really true to say life is unfair. This song fucking humbled me.
yeah but that's for the electric guitar studio version. I made a video with tabs trying to show how the right hand technique works for the acoustic version, it's the only correct one I've seen on youtube, here it is: /watch?v=5etpllTqiDM
the hardest thing i found to nail whilst learning this was the strumming pattern. the chords are pretty straight forward and are easy to re note if you can’t wrap your thumbs around the neck. as soon as you get the strumming/picking/slapping you’re set
Chris Zoupa is a fucking legend. The only man that can teach you to play Through the fire and flames reasonably well in under 10 hours at 0.05x normal speed.
For people looking for a Neon's live version great tutorial (Check it out too, Tyler haha), there's also a brazilian guitar channel called "Cifra Club" that teaches this song exactly the same way as Mayer does. According to the instructor (an amazing brazilian guitar player), "This song has a very very high difficulty level, so this tutorial will be a great challenge" hahaha Anyway, here's link: /watch?v=sf17osuWTnA&t=429s
Gravity is the hardest. To get all thr nuances correct, thr slight sharpness, to get it to feel like one of ur last arguments with someone u love... is almost imoossiblr
There are certain nuances of this song that's really REALLY hard to catch if learning the song by ear. It's such exceptional cases in which I do look up a good lesson or at least a transcription. I agree that using tabs is a terrible idea for growing as a guitar player. But, taking some help from tabs and still using your own skills to learn the song is perfectly fine. You didn't get it 100% right, but awesome job.
Ameen Singh AMEN! Nothing wrong with cross checking with videos, lessons, and tabs to make sure you got it down 100%. He seemed too prideful to want to watch lessons and use tabs. But on a song like this it's the only way be accurate.
I made a video with tabs trying to show how the right hand technique works for the acoustic version, it's the only correct one I've seen on youtube, here it is: /watch?v=5etpllTqiDM
The thumb slide John Mayer does from the 8th to 10th fret on the verse turnaround is insane and sounds incredible. I've never even anyone even attempt to learn it like that.

John Mayer is one of the greatest ever at the lobster claw technique. He picks this riff with two fingers.

The true marvel of guitar transcription is Chris Zoupa. Easily the most talented UA-cam guitarist and one of the best teachers on here hands down
There’s no way he could possibly learn this by ear this quick. He either already knows the song or he took time to edit out himself learning as he goes
This more than likely took him a few hours. He chopped it down to a 13 minutes video. He just happens to put a shit ton of work into his musical ability
you have no idea how much inspiration came from this video. you, the best guitarist i know, took time like this to learn a song that i wouldve thought came easy to such a god. but for 2 years ive dreamt of being able to play that song. and to this day you still make my dreams feel less impossible man
not the first time i’ve watched this video btw
And What about the thumb hitting E string up?
Him: “That’s weird I don’t have grammarly and I don’t need it.”
Grammarly who was about to give him 1,000,000 dollars so that he could promote their website: “You’ll regret that.”
yeah but that was comedy gold, so... worth it.
I can’t do techniques on the guitar but i can pick my nose professionally
Where the light is… indeed the one of best performances!

I learned how to play this riff in thirty minutes, yours is about ten times better. Keep up the great work!
This was better than any tutorial. i learned how to play it in about 20 minutes since you did all the hard work.
The dude is 6’3” I can only image how huge his hands actually are. 😳
Damn boo what that thumb do? 👁️👄👁️
Fuck I'm a whole ass foot smaller. Guess I'm at a genetic disadvantage for learning this riff

This is one of the best how to practice videos on the internet. Thank you so much for this.
Thanks for posting a video showing the real struggles of learning certain songs. Nice to see someone much better than myself struggle until they get it as well
That riff is so SATISFYING to listen to 😩💗
I feel like most people play this riff wrong (or not exactly right to be precise). I think as you said, examining the artist playing it live is the best way to go
I made a video with tabs trying to show how the right hand technique works for the acoustic version, it's the only correct one I've seen on youtube, here it is: /watch?v=5etpllTqiDM
12:33 I laughed so hard because of this ahahahahahah
Hahahah I was almost laying on the floor
I was searching for that comment🤣
this whole riff is a humbling experience

But the beginning was so slow and frustrating
but now with yousician my learning seems fun and easy!
Just grab your acoustic or electric
And play along
I'm starting to try learn this song now. This is how I interpreted the picking pattern from watching his Live in LA video at .25x speed:
John only uses his thumb and index finger.
Basically, this song is hard as fuck.
that last part was hilarious i hope you became a better musician in 4 years
"Oh, that's weird, I don't have Grammarly, and I... don't need it..." Loved that comment! That's how I feel every freakin' time that ad pops up.
John Mayer actually did a UA-cam shorts and I found it very helpful. A lot of people did not think it was helpful but I thought it was very nice seeing the man who created it teach it himself
Nice Chris zoupa shout out dude. That man taught me guitar pre-youtube and he's the reason I'm so musically inspired today.

Paul Davids explained it in his video and i think his version is almost 100% same to JM
Jamie Harrison Guitar has the best version..
@@lamefart Definitely Paul Davids and Richard Smith.
@@coryCuc Jamie Harrison had that left thumb down to the tee that's why his sounded nearer to John's. I've watched the other's versions, bdw.
@@lamefart For the same reasons you listed, are the same reasons I think Paul and Richard do a better job at explaining it and playing it.
@@coryCuc haven't seen Paul doing the whole thing including the intro and I A-B JM's and JHG's versions and not surprisingly, they matched with just a slight tempo difference 2 mins into the song.
Paul David's breakdown of this riff is very good.
Thanks for showing the process. Sometimes I just feel stupid when trying it by ear and not getting it. You gave me comfort that this is just a progress until you overcome.
As someone a year into learning. This video is prefect. Thank you for the pov 'good guitar player learning guitar'
the man the myth himself got sick of everybody getting stressed over this that he uploaded a tiktok tutorial himself hahah
He flick and slaps at the same time. That’s what gives him the “gun shape” hand
That scene at 12:39 killed me. I could not stop laughing when he cut to John mayer with the WTF watermark.
It’s very humbling to see a pro like you trying to learn something in Guitar. Then the humbling stopped after seeing you learn it in under an hour.
My beliefs were proving true: my hands were big *enough.*
But, alas, my optimism proved to be premature.
Should have continued with Ross' video. He explains the slapping after he shows the picking pattern.
yeah but that's for the electric guitar studio version. I made a video with tabs trying to show how the right hand technique works for the acoustic version, it's the only correct one I've seen on youtube, here it is: /watch?v=5etpllTqiDM
I just witnessed a person growing and become more intellectually capable of higher ergonomical situations Outstanding kelp at it !
This was all at once interesting, surprisingly inspiring, and incredibly discouraging. I fucking loved it.
The thumb and forefinger pattern is actually the way that John Mayer plays.
WTF ONLY 45 MINUTES???? I’d take AT LEAST a week to get that good... Congrats man
One year to me lol
John Mayer should be part of the top 100 guitarists selected in the rolling Stone magazine..
Ryan no he is just a slowed down version of Jimi Hendrix and that neon riff is a faster version of Pete Townsend solo
@@gregory7807 Being a slowed down version of Hendrix would surely put you in the top 100 of modern guitarists

Is so amazing how an amazing guitar player have to learn another person playing ♥️
the hardest thing i found to nail whilst learning this was the strumming pattern. the chords are pretty straight forward and are easy to re note if you can’t wrap your thumbs around the neck. as soon as you get the strumming/picking/slapping you’re set
p.s which isn’t f***ing easy lmao

That man taught me how to play guitar before he started UA-cam. He is the reason I'm so musically inspired today and is one of the best humans I know.
For people looking for a Neon's live version great tutorial (Check it out too, Tyler haha), there's also a brazilian guitar channel called "Cifra Club" that teaches this song exactly the same way as Mayer does. ...when hard work finally pays off
There are certain nuances of this song that's really REALLY hard to catch if learning the song by ear.
Thank you. I really enjoyed you video. As a novice, I am still learning how to learn to play.
Having a smashing time.
