  • This short video shows in a simple way what three-dimensional seismic cube is, explains why it is more beneficial compared to 2D modification, and gives you an idea of how scientists use it. The idea to use three-dimensional seismic method for displaying geological structures appeared several decades ago, however its extensive use began only 10-15 years ago. 3D seismic acquisition, processing and interpretation requires significant resources, but the quality and value of the results are worth the cost. 3D seismic is most widely applied in offshore petroleum industry, where it provides crucial geological information and helps to significantly reduce the financial risks at the following drilling stage.
    Interesting facts
    • Despite the high costs, US Gulf of Mexico performs almost ubiquitous 3D seismic coverage
    • Sometimes 3D seismic fleet counts 5 to 7 vessels at a single survey, including supplying and security boats
    • Impact on mammals is an important issue offshore because subsea seismic sources may highly affect animals, living in proximity to the survey area.
