  • On February 14, 2024, FDNY officials provided an update on an all-hands fire in Brooklyn.
At 9:50 am Wednesday, the FDNY responded to a fire in an apartment building at 315 Sutter Avenue in Brooklyn.
“Upon arrival, units were met with a heavy fire condition in apartment 4B. They forced the door to the apartment and entered without the protection of a charged hose line. Ladder 120 made their way in, located a civilian and removed him to the street and handed him off to EMS where care was provided.” said Battalion Chief James Ahrens.
“We had multiple people advising us before we even got in the building that there was an occupant trapped in apartment 4B. We knew we had somebody in there who definitely needed to be tended to,” said Lieutenant Salvatorre Mirra of Ladder 120. “So, myself and my inside team immediately ascended to the fourth floor where we came out of the stairwell, and we had a heavy smoke condition. We made our way to the door, forced the door, upon initially doing our searches, once we passed the hallway by the kitchen, we found an unconscious victim on the floor. We didn’t have a hose line to protect us at the time. We knew there was someone in there so we couldn’t wait. We had to make a lifesaving decision which is what we train for,” Lieutenant Salvatore Mirra of Ladder 120.
The patient was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. 11 other patients non-life threatening injuries were transported.

It's reassuring that FDNY leadership personnel apparently don't spend much time being drilled in public speaking and in what info must be delivered to the press.

Would u rather a have proficient public speaker fighting a fire or a fireman? The fdny has an entire dept devoted to making statements but recently someone seems to think the members on scene should address the media.

@@jimmyjamesl2318: What's required is dead easy and should be learned in about two minutes. But unless the guy at the mic says it, some reporter has to ask it. The PR office need not be very much involved in such a simple task as telling folks how to introduce themselves and what aspects of the call to deal with.

@@keithnichols7926message got through in a very professional, humble, and timely manner. This lieutenant was chosen to give his debrief of the scene not because he’s a “good speaker” but because he was a primary source and could give an accurate depiction of what had happened. I see no issue in what was said or the delivery of the speech.

@@ironsrp: My major quibble was that the guy didn't begin with his name, its spelling, and his title. So a reporter had to ask. I hadn't heard a previous FDNY representative do this, so I commented.

Actually, he retired not long after this. Hopefully, he enjoys a long retirement.
