  • A snowy walk up Ben Wyvis on one of the rare calm days between the relentless winter storms we've been enduring. Just how relentless they've been is highlighted by the fact this was my first mountain walk since 10th November. The first of the entire winter!! Are days like this the best we can hope for in Winter 2013/14?

Wonderful video Ben! Great safety tips, and a good reminder to keep one's navigational skills sharp. -23f here in the U.P. of Michigan this morning. We have been in a deep freeze since December. These crazy weather patterns are world-wide. We do have wonderful sunshine, and soon I'll strap on my snowshoes and get my daily exercise. Thank you for the terrific video, very enjoyable! Sincerely, Ossie

I am not sure how many weather systems or jet streams that originate here in the states come to the UK but if most of them do then look out ..we are at the beginning of a double shot snow/ice event here..one is to begin for my area tonight and another to hit Wednesday. I asked the local weather man this question about our systems making it there and he said a lot of them do..EVERYONE here is so sick of winter this year, it has been brutal in places that never have bad winters..here in the deep south we went 2 full weeks with temps at night in the 8-10 degree F at night to 28-30 degree F day temps..now we are in for ice/snow..then Saturday/Sunday we will be close to 60 F ...lol... I think we have had a taste of Scottish weather with all the wild variables this season...ATB Maria

Well the jetstream that circles at or around our latitude runs from west to east, so we tend to get whatever it picks up over the US or Canada. This year it's the marked contrast (over North America) between the warm air rushing up from the south and the cold air pushing down from the Arctic that's made for an unusually powerful jetstream. Much of the US and Canada has been locked in cold for months, whereas much of the UK has been locked in a succession of storms since November, being picked up over you and spun in our general direction.
As a result it's been the wettest December in Scotland for over 100 years and the wettest January in England since records began in 1767!

Ugh, that sounds woefully familiar....except we've not been in double figures since the second week of December here in Fife I think.

Just watched this one again. Saw the remnants or the making of a fogbow just behind you at approx. 9:18 .

Yeah the cloud was so thin on the plateau that it came and went for much of the morning :)

That windfarm is the lochluichart plus extension, then there is the corriemoilie one also being built right next to it... here is the planning application for the one next to ben wyvis itself bit.ly/1h7T92Y also here is a map of the wind farms in the surrounding area bit.ly/1bRAS5m

That particular one was the last thing I wanted to see from Ben Wyvis, not least because I'd taken comfort in there being a clear view west seeing as the view east has long been lost to turbines.
