Learning the skills is not hard. It's the constant movement, the endless days, lack of food until your body is quivering from fatigue, and lack of sleep until your body falls asleep while walking. That's why the Ranger Course is also known as the Hunger Games. You get maybe one MRE worth 1,200 calories, but you're burning up 4,000 calories a day. Ranger candidates will lose 30 pounds easy and they were in good shape when they started. All the while you're having to plan and execute the mission. And when you break for the night, leaders have to plan for the next day, supervise the preparation of defensive positions, and clean your weapons before you can even shut your eyes. Then it's up 2 hours later for guard duty. You're completely exhausted, and when you're that tired, your mind goes to mush. You forget things. You can't think. You can't keep track of your way points in land navigating. You fumble your assignments. You mess up your ambush preparation because all your body wants is just to nap for 3 hours. And maybe a hot meal. But it never seems to end.

Honor graduate class 05-13 here. Went through 82nd pre ranger school and can personally say it was harder than any single phase of ranger school. That’s why 82nd has such a high graduation rate. You pass pre ranger you’re passing ranger school lol

@@tennray thanks! From my experience they didn’t. They were very firm in asking me what my plans were after graduating ranger school. My command sergeant major basically told me to stay where I’m at as a team leader for a couple of years and to not waste my talent going straight to regiment or group. I ended up fulfilling my contract and getting out 8 months after graduating ranger school. They were pissed lol

@@Ceez91 What a terrible SGM lol. Like I get senior NCOs and officers want to brag (no pun intended) about having X number of tabbed paratroopers in their respective BNs. However, what moron of a SGM would try to dissuade someone who just passed ranger school from going to RASP or SFAS?

The majority of people looking to join the Army are looking for a job,not to get physically and mentally crushed.Infantry service is a calling
you got to want to embrace the suck. Only a small percentage of the military are true warriors looking to prove their worth on some battlefield.
This isn't selling the Army to someone wanting to pick up some trade skills.

Not sure of the similarities, if any, but I went through Recondo School, at Ft. Bragg (Also known as baby Rangers), where they claim to cram the three months of Ranger training into three weeks, with a one week FTX. No way that was as tough as Ranger School, but I think it may have been every bit as intense. I understand the Rangers have an FTX that lasts one month. There is a huge difference between 1 week and 1 month, in terms of fatigue and wear and tear on your body. RESPECT I still have my Ranger Manual from 1974, I thinl it was.

Recondo School kicked my little ass in 1985, Class 4-85. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to go through, beside dealing with my cancer and other health issues.

@@paratrooperlane7022 Mine as well. Did they still have 'The Log' when you went through. In case they didn't, 'The Log' was where you went for doing the gig pushups, and there was only room for about 20 people at the same time. You had to put your feet on The Log that was elevated about 18 inches. One time a guy fell asleep on firewatch, and the Ranger Sergeant had both barracks out on the log at about 0200. We were three deep trying to do pushups and I was on the bottom tier getting smoked as to why I wasn't doing pushups with two other guys on top of me. Funny now, not so funny then.🤐😏🤨🤣

Very cool. I was 2/325 back in mid and late 90s. Medic. On DRF 7, I would pull PRC (pre Ranger course) med coverage, did it a good handful of times.
Is SURT still at the old Recondo course at Bragg?
Even pulling med coverage, I learned a bunch of shit just hanging with Cadre.
