My main issue is understanding different accents and ATC audio setups, especially when receiving departure SIDs. I often struggle to hear the instructions clearly, so I have to write down the expected SID in advance. While I have no issues with phraseology, I feel terrible about asking the controller multiple times for clarification, as I sometimes have trouble with their pronunciation. Some controllers talk so fast that they barely pronounce their words properly. I love the controllers from Schiphol though, always very clear in pronunciation and give precise instructions :)
The SID is part of the flight preparation as listening to the ATIS (among others for sure), so the SID you get shouldn’t really surprise you during the clearance. And one basic rule even in real life aviation - when in doubt ask!
i struggled with as well but i soon realised that if i go into my legs page on fmc the first waypoint is usually the name of the sid you are expected to fly and in doing that i now know the sid ill be given in advance of requesting clearence.
I now have about 95 hours on VATSIM, and I remember when you posted your first flight. Watching your videos helped me a lot understanding how VATSIM works and making my first communication. Now I fly for a virtual airline and I enjoy it so much. Thank you for uploading al this content!
Did my first VATSIM tonight from KBOS to CYUL. Had a couple of comms issues when I realized that taxiing and take off were done by Tower. But I managed to communicate along the way and landed accordingly. Can't believe after 100's of flight with the flight plan, I was actually nervous landing the plane. It was like, I need to do this because now someone is watching :) I really can see how having a dedicated comms unit would help so much.
Great video! One comment though: You're correct when stating that you are invisible during an "oberserver" session, but the comms are active! Means that if you push the "push to talk" button and speak, you will be heard on VATSIM! Happend to me recently ;-)
Thank you very much for this vid. I made my first vatsim flight a few days ago and it went horribly. First my a320 engines would NOT turn on, so I had to reload the game, and then I messed the comms when I asking for a taxi when I didn’t have clearance, then requested a specific runway to takeoff on, but the controller just denied it 😂😂 Anyways thanks again fly safe
It can be hard but remember that Vatsim is trying to make the simulation as real as possible, so that means you need to study the correct procedures and had you done that you would have known to ask for clearance first. The controller would not have given you taxi instructions and do not have the facility or time to take you to one side to explain that if it is busy. Secondly, why were you asking for a non standard runway, there are standard departures that leave from the active runway and whilst you are entitled to ask for that it just holds everything up for all other departures. If you really want to fly on Vatsim I would suggest reading the correct procedures and phraseology and maybe spend some time as an observer and listen to what is going on before connecting as a pilot. When you do wish to fly then find a quiet airport that is controlled and fly from there.
Great video. I learnt to use Vatsim using Beyond ATC. Great tool for that. I would add that enforcement was live with BATC, whereas it wasn't on Say Intentions initially. It now is. I still think BATC is the better tool to learn, but SI is the better overall AI ATC program. Anyway, been a while since I went on Vatsim, so watching this has peaked my interest again 👍🏻
Oh wow, I did not know that you could move around in observer mode in Vatsim. I always just sat there at the airport, just listening. Thank you for the great video! I always love Vatsim content.
1:23, little note, people will be able to hear you if you push your push-to-talk button (this is how shared flights can work). Other than that everything is pretty spot on. If you are on the fence about vatsim, go for it; you won't regret it.
They can hear you if you are in observer mode, but they dont see you! Shared cockpit works this way.. both can talk but only one is visible. But if you dont press the PTT button u are a ghost😉
You have an advantage compared to others. Your natural language is English, so the problem for others who not have English like own language , but can speak and listen and understand English but never like you, specially with some controllers who speak bad English and have bad audio setups.
You have to hand it to the serious VATSIM guys, man. The amount of effort they put into simulation is astounding. At first, I thought “why wouldn’t you just get your pilots license with this much energy and enthusiasm for aviation” but the answer to that question is obvious. I spent roughly $20,000 and that’s on the *lower* end nowadays. Flying is one of those awful things that’s as fascinating as it is expensive…
Good stuff bro, im from Poland and my English is not well . But i know everything about flying and procedure this gets me advance to understand what ATC wants from me .
Most important you need to be very proficient on the aircraft you are flying last thing you want is stressing about communication and not be able to input or following simple instructions because of a lack of knowledge on how to fly you plane.
I just thought if I can do the test with 90% I can fly on Vatsim easily. No. I didnt know what an ifr clearance was, but the ground controller was really nice and helped me a bit.
Fantastic video. I currently have Beyond ATC which im going to practice with before trying Vatsim. Being asked to do something out of the ordinary like fly a holding pattern does freak me out a bit though If I was to try Vatsim
I have flown Vatsim for several hours and have never been given a hold clearance, unless you participate in public even, the airspaces won't ever be crowded enough for ATC to assign you a hold. That being said if an instrument approach has a published procedure turn (one of several procedure turns being a hold pattern) that is a different story.
hey, one tip for you: you are using the "th" in your pronounciation of 3 in your demo vatsim flight. I would recommend that in the future you say "tree" for the number 3 since this is the correct pronounciation when communicating via radios. :)
Technically speaking you are correct three is 'tree' and nine is 'niner' but it is sort of an unspoken phraseology rule... no one is going to drill you because you say 'three' on frequency.
On the other end, very well explained by you this little tutorial, sorry not have people with your level of English and the nice level of sound, not that little 8 or 9 years old boys in a tower , approach or others with bad English and bad setups.
I currently use SayIntentions and would love to use VatSim but I fly in VR so writing down instructions is virtually (lol) impossible; if the ATC voice was transcribed as text then that might make life easier but for now SI is a great compromise.
if you want to fly on vatsim, you could just write down your instructions in the fmc/mcdu. that's how it is most of the time done in the real world (speaking from a320 family exceperience). then you would not need to exit your vr environment
Thanks for the help mate. I have a question. How do I join the Server with the other people on Vatsim. If I click on online with live players etc. And also when I am in the game and play online without Vatsim then the planes around me are the default stupid msfs planes and it looks bad. Can you help?
How to act when you can’t understand completely on ATC’s accent? I’m afraid if I make a request to speak slowly will hurting their feelings cause of their accent
I've tried VATSIM a few times over the last decade. At 9pm on a saturday night in the UK (prime time you'd think) there are usually 2-3 towers manned in the whole country.....what's the point?
@@Rowan66109 See there's the problem. Flying til about 8pm for a lot of us simply because we have kids. Flying doesn't start still late cos kids have to be in bed. And even before 8pm, there's generally only Heathrow, Manchester and maybe 2 sectors manned.
Love it when these punk ass Vatsim controllers rattle off taxi instructions when you just exit the runway after landing and you're flipping switches and steering the plane. They do know it's a single pilot operation, right?

That can be a problem but you are within your right to ask them to repeat as they must communicate in a manner you can understand

Great video. I always support anything that helps new pilots learn how to VATSIM properly!
Thank you mate! The best vatsim tutotial for starters!
Excellent. I've been thinking about using VATSim for ages - but i needed the push to get me there. Thanks.

Good stuff mate ! I must try :) The hardest part, is to understand what's being said...and the speed of communication
I guess my only tip for that would be to anticipate what ATC is going to do with you next since this happens A LOT in real life as well.
Oh wow, I did not know that you could move around in observer mode in Vatsim. I always just sat there at the airport, just listening. Thank you for the great video! I always love Vatsim content.

just the video i was needing
brilliant video ! loved every second, a lot to learn
Love your channel. Very curious to know what monitor you use. A video going through your set up would be very interesting. Take care , Steve
It’s on the channel, over a year ago now though. Might need to scroll back a bit 🙂

Just a quick question! I have always wondered this. What does echo alpha bravo Charlie delta etc mean?
A, B, C and D etc…

How do I get started flying an plane in general? It seems so overwhelming trying to understand the navigation tools within the plane.
are there any free options to file a flight plan?
I am broke and cannot afford to pay a monthly subscription

what if i have 4flight dose that work to plan/get atis?
I am still trying to find a good way to copy instructions down while in VR
The scratchpad on the fmc/mcdu?
HOW DO YOU GET THOSE TAXIWAYS ON NAVIGRAPH PLEASE AS MINE NEVER SHOW LIKE THAT
That is Map mode and you just zoom in to the Airport. Until the taxiways appear.
2 minute gang
How to act when you can’t understand completely on ATC’s accent? I’m afraid if I make a request to speak slowly will hurting their feelings cause of their accent
Request the instruction via text on vpilot

can't expect there to be ATC all of the time, and 9PM isn't the best time anyway. you want to fly up until about 8PM for the best coverage
