That is a myth, resting your hand on the shifter will NOT wear the transmission unless you are actively trying to pull it out of gear.

The dealership wouldn't let me test drive the Evo I bought. It's pretty standard in private to say cash or check in hand if you want a test drive or I'll just drive it for you.
There are people who comes to test drive and not even consider buying it.
