Just wanted to Thank You for your great detailed review. Today I bought the 2017 Version for my Note 8 off Craigslist for $90. The seller said it worked for the Note 8 but when I got home I noticed that it was the 2017 non Note 8 Version. I freaked out thinking i got screwed and been searching around for reviews and was lucky to come across yours. You saved me from spending more $$$. Thanks

A just made comment reminded me of this video. I got my Note8 a few weeks ago and with it the new Gear VR, so now I have 3 generations! lol. Anyway just to make people aware. My friend, a manager of Samsung Turkey warned against using the older VR. The very tight fit puts internal pressure on the USB connector inside and can break the connection. It may not happen at first but the constant inserting and removing the VR will break it. He said, in his own words. "We tested it on the chance that the other one would be ok, but it wasn't". He also warned that this is not covered by warranty and already they've had a number of Note8 devices returned for repair...at the owners expense. So beware and it's better to use the VR designed for the Note8.

All the time i had assumed that there is only one gearvr for 2017, didnt realise it was two but i kept seeing two different prices for gearvr 2017...your opening line cleared my confusion. thankfully the one i ordered is the 2nd version for 2017,the note 8 edition. thanks
i also own the 2016 version,it wasnt working with my note 5 back then ...maybe it was a block for note 7 to discourage people from keeping the super but dangerous note 7 , so i had a gearvr i never truly experienced ,when my note 5 got bad i traded it for an s7edge. boom! i got the VR experience! and well i cant wait for the note 8 edition to arrive!

Hey TK, I think it also makes a big difference for someone like me coming from a Pixel XL and using the Daydream controller as the similar idea with the volume on the controller. And easier switch over their product.

On the 2016 model, did you use the 2016 USB C adapter or a 2017 USB C adapter. In your video both adapters appear to have a white or light area near connector. My 2016 model with 2016 USB C adapter is all black and the Note 8 will not fit.
+Quiet Riptide 2016 has 2 models one that came. Out at the note 7 launch with USB c, that is the model that I used.
Could you please write model numbers under the video description? It would be much easier to distinguish what it what that way. According to Wikipedia there was only one model released in 2016 (SM-R323)
Zlatko Milcic r325 is specifically for the Note 8, anything else will not work. Before the Note 8 there is r324 for the S8 and S8+
Quiet Riptide they made a Note 8 edition because the previous models cannot fit it
+Solara Rumor its for the note 8 and before. The r325 should work with the s8/s8+ as well.
Could you do a video on the movie side of things please? Is it possible to watch movies from your phone's gallery & is it possible to watch a physical 3d DVD using the vr? The reason I ask is a guy at my local Samsung store said I can only watch movies I buy from the vr store.
So he is Wrong. you can watch whatever you have on your phone. meaning any MP4 file you have stored can be viewed. you can use the samsung gallery to load your videos and watch them the 360 video player in the oculus store also does that. now for movies on your PC you can use Plex to stream it from your PC to the Great VR. a lot of options not just samsung selections.

I have the note 8 but when I had the gear vr with the s7 edge it over heated every 25 kin hues or ski and I'm a tech head so nothing was running besides the vr software.
Does the note 8 over heat and shut down the same way?
I want to get the newest gear vr but not if it still cuts your experience short.

they are diffrent in size, and as you know we don't use it with cover on just to protect it when in the case

A quick question TK. Is there a possibility that the smaller one will scratch the frame on the side you pop it in? I have a free gift voucher from Samsung and I'd prefer to use it on something else as I have the late dark colour version with no controller can pick a controller up on Amazon for about 30 euro. If it won't scratch I'll keep the smaller one and get something else instead. Great videos by the way, very enjoyable, easy to watch and so informative. Gün aydın from İstanbul!
the fit is tight but the phone wont move and it does actually fit so I would recommend getting something else and yea the link for the remote in the description $20 or something much cheaper than getting the big one
I also have it & it doesn't scratch my Note 8 but unfortunately it did lift my screen protector, so I didn't use it no more and its not a cheap screen protector, I purchased it from T-Mobile.

TK Bay Hi it's a reg thin protector. I also had the same kind of screen protector on my S8 Plus And didn't have any issues of it lifting when i used it with my VR. I think it's cause how it fits too tight it lifted

the earliest model you can use is the one released at the time of the Note 7 with USB C
if you are getting the gear vr now I would recommend the early either the early 2017 with remote or the note 8 edition. both will work for you best

I have the s8 one and i see that acually che upper (camera) part of the note is a little bit raised compared to the bottom with the 2017/s8 one, do you notice this difference between the 2 eyes while using it? Thx for the great video!
so yes the S8 model is a tight fit, but during gameplay and watching videos no issues, and it did not fall out once or even budge. for best fit the new is the one intended for the note 8 but if you have the S8 model then you should be good.

your will work just fine, a little tight but you can use it and play VR games. Tempered Glass should be ok as long as you have a good installation, just keep in mind anything that add thickness to the device will affect the fit in the Gear VR.

I have the Gear VR from the Note 7 release, but I can't get my note 8 in it? The phone hits the piece that holds it in place, I can't latch it. What is different between ours? Any adjustments?
I have not done any adjustments but it seems like they released 2 versions of the note 7 VR units. as you see in the video It fits in the one I got .Weird. if you have upgrade get the 2017 S8 one that will work and you get the remote with it.
As far as I can tell, they are both the same price for now. Is there performance increase from note 5 to note 8? I may just keep my note 5 and headset for VR if not. $130 for another headset 1 yr later is a bit ridiculous.
+Erik Crossley for game play with the remote, not really. The device has a lot more ram and you will get an overall better user experience with it. For games you have a great setup

Neo Samsonite it will not. I have a Dbrand on mine and a screen protector and it's a tight fit on just that alone. I see markings on the bottom of the screen (bezels) protector where I plugged it in, I can't imagine using it with a case at all. I haven't heard anyone suggesting this, everywhere I checked they say to remove the casing each time

you have to press and hold the back bottom during game play and then select record in that menu.

the gear vr does not generate heat, the phone works the same as in the note 8 edition. also why all CAPs?
Please, be aware that the new "Gear VR Note 8 Edition", is having some sort of issue with using the pass through charging while running the "Oculus" app... It keeps on trying to recalibrate throughout the entire use of the device; in addition to kicking you out of the apps.... "Samsung", was notified already by me so that they can start addressing this issue...Maybe with an update of some sort.
Thank you for the heads up, so far I have not needed to use it with pass through Power but i will keep that in mind, should be something can fix with a software up.

QUESTION: I use the OtterBox protective case with my Note8. The case is great, but it is fairly bulky and adds perhaps a quarter inch of width around all four sides of the phone. Will the phone + case fit comfortably into this new GearVR, or will I have to remove the phone from the case each time I want to have a VR session? The Google Daydream looks like it will handle the phone/case just fine, but I'd prefer to go with the GearVR if possible. Thanks!
+Gary Scott daydream should be fine but the gear vr system normally has very little room. I say it will need to be removed to be used with the gear vr.
I have the Otterbox Defender on my Note8 and I use the 2017 Gear VR (non-Note 8 edition so a tight fit length-wise) and there is no chance that the case fits because of the width so even with the Note 8 version of the VR, us Otterbox Defender users are out of luck.
Thanks Kidz & TK. I'm kinda stuck deciding between the GearVR and the Daydream. The GearVR seems like the better choice in terms of content but removing the phone from the Otterbox seems like a semi-minor pain in the butt. On the other hand, the Daydream looks like there will be no "fit" issues but I am worried about the overheating issue with the Daydream + OtterBox, plus Daydream seems fairly behind in terms of available game content. Grrr! Would appreciate any suggestions/advice anyone has!
I've not tried the DayDream but I am very happy with the Gear VR (subject to the expected restriction of the screen being in low-res and being able to see the pixels). Want to know what I've done? I've semi-ditched the Otterbox case because it is such a pain in the ass for quite a few things, especially when trying to use the VR. And it is a lot bulier than I expected - but it is good for what it is designed for! So I now put on the Otterbox when I know I am going to be in a situation where it would be beneficial to use it. But most times I now use a slim case for most uses. Just been trying this way of using the Otterbox as a use-when-needed-heavy-duty-case for a short time. But I've not yet found a suitable everyday case that allows me to whip it off in seconds yet gives me protection, good looks and a good grip. But I saw that D-Brand are releasing their new GRIP case that works with their skins. I am looking forward to the reviews on that as it would mean it would be super easy to remove when I (or the kids) want to play on the VR AND I could get a custom skin (like the dragon skin that I put on my friends S8) to make it look cool.

Yes, it's extended all the way. The actual recess is just too small. It is curious that yours does fit.
I think I know the problem. My usb c clip looks thicker than spare clips for sale on Ebay. I'll give one of those a go.

+lol corporation depends on how much time you can wait for root. SD Always lags on getting that, but it should a lot faster since the S8 and S8+ got it.

My note 8 fit right out of the box but after leaving it with my little girl it doesn't and the A changed to B on the inside.

I just wish they made it case friendly. Samsung probably lost a fair bit of customers ; those like me whom doesn't want the hassle of taking and putting the phone back into the case, risking scratches and stuff.
Its hard making a case friendly device with all cases looking different. I am with you that its a deterrent for us to play with these vr headsets if we have to do that every time
Agree. But i feel they should at least make it at least a thin case friendly. Not expecting like a otterbox defender size phone case, but just those typical TPU phone case. At least these TPU phone case is what most ppl have on their phones :)
any case you add to the VR headset will create a gap between the phone screen and the case letting in more light. I hope the improve it with the S9 version coming out soon

Giving more detail to my issue... I have a wi-fi connection, no sim card in Note 8 and I'm using the Samsung Gear VR 2017 Note 8 edition... Apps will download, but will not install
check your storage ? and also are you able to install apps from the play store ? last thing is putting in a sim fix the issue ?
