  • Bringing you the early days of the Leyland Lynx when the dreams of the design team were becoming a reality. Secrets of Lynx design are unveiled as we go back in time to experience what it was like 40 years ago on 7th July 1984.
To my knowledge, this is the first informative video online on the Lynx and I have to give many thanks to Basil Hancock who was heavily involved with Lynx design at the time for making this presentation happen.

I’ve driven all but one of the Australian Lynxes, the locally bodied and WMPTE examples. I also worked with Basil in Sydney when I was an apprentice. I had no idea how invested he was in all this until years later. All those missed conversations!

This is an outstanding video and very informative. I remember WMPTE's 5 stage one lynxes fitted with hydracyclic gear shifters prior to the 250 production models with fully automatic gearboxes.. Hope to see more in this series very soon!

Centrewest buses at Uxbridge depot had the Lynx on route 607 for many years. They were changed over for Volvo double deckers with Northern Counties bodywork.

I do remember riding on a Leyland Lynx on the 607 back in the early 1990s and also in other bus companies as well. I was told by one man who ran a transportation company in Harfordshire back then at a bus rally in Essex in the late 1980s said to me Lynxes are bad news.

Just a pity that two things happened which brought about the premature end of these excellent buses. Deregulation Day in 1986 and the advance of low floor buses.

What an excellent video! Drove these in their “second life” with Damory Coaches in Dorset. I think we had a total of 5 if I remember correctly and I remember our manager having a bit of a celebration when all five were on the road for a full days service…. Excellent buses to drive and looked very smart too. Think the rot got too them in the end though like so many 80’s 90’s designs.

@@stevedoesdiesel Really appreciate, there is more to come later this year. You might know that E64 WDT was saved and rebuilt by Chesterfield based preservationists and had a life on the Barrow Hill gala days although she has been in storage for a few years now. You'll be interested to know that the sound effects of the approaching Lynx on the pave test were donated from Damory E51 MMT, the only TL11H/hydracyclic Lynx I have been on.

@@leylandlynxfanclub6286 Excellent! Had the joy of riding on it when visiting the Barrow Hill Beer Fest a few years ago. Must dig my photos out of it in service 👍

I have driven two lynxes one had a coming together with a raising bollard resulting in a radiator with a v in the middle and bent entrance floor written off. The second cane from Dorset sprinter both were fitted with the TL11 engine.

You need a dark background behind your white on screen text as it’s very difficult to read. Or why not just voice it instead.

@@ShiresMatt Sorry you couldn't see the text well. Dealing with the text was most difficult as I was aiming for a certain look but I spent time upgrading visibility until I found it acceptable. Of course my eyes may be different to somebody else's. I'll consider this point for any future videos.
