Rip David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Dennis Edwards, Paul Williams, and Melvin Franklin. Thank You Berry Gordy For Having A Wonderful Group Like This Over The Years.
.Great to see the clip of the Headliners. So often those Motown acts who never quite made it are overlooked ,Hatfield Littles or LaBrenda Ben for example.Wonderful records that thrill me to this day!
I really enjoyed this. I was born in 1980, I remember the Motown 25 Anniversary & MJ introduced the world to the moonwalk. It was at that moment I fell in love with music I was only 4 or 5. TV was bigger & in color lol MJ's white glove was everything. It's crazy how music grows & how we grow as human beings. If music brings people together like this I wish America was just 1 big party with great feel good music, this would be a much happier place ☝🏾🏃🏾♀️💨💨💨
I truly loved everything about Motown music and their singers. We will never see anything like Motown ever again. May all the ones that is still living and the ones that have gone on may the continue to be blessed and the ones that's gone may their souls rest in peace and in God's loving arms 🙏❣️❣️🙏❤️🙏❣️🙏❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❣️❣️❣️🙏❤️🙏🙏❤️🙏
All the ladies hair do's look marvelous and they all look sweet and professional. Nice voices that they all had. Hitsville studio in Detroit along with producer Berry Gordy that gave them a record deal. Berry Gordy was one of a kind also.
This makes me so happy. You see, as a teenager in the early 80s, I could not stand the high tech soulless synthesizer banging and voice enhancers that passed for music in those days (which I later learned was forced on us by cheapskate producers). I was listening to things like this from a generation earlier and liked it better, but other kids weren't into that so I felt weird. Now, I love this stuff with no shame in my game, and music like this has stood the test of time. The joy in what they are doing is infectious.
Love this. I love the hand dancing on "He Was Really Saying Something" that brother with the black sweater and his partner are getting it in. Look at the clothes..... no bumping and grinding and humping....@38:09
The way Motown Groomed their "Acts" back in the day still continued. In a Interview with Lou Pearlman, he "talked" to Smokey Robinson on how it was done back in the day. He used that formula with The Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, O-Town, and US5. Then in 2002 on Popstars: The Rivals they did the same thing when creating a Boy Band/Girl Group in the UK and the Three Judges were "Powerhouses". Geri Halliwell Former Spice Girl, Louis Walsh who was The "Father" of The Boy Band Movement launching the Careers of Boyzone & Westlife (Who did duets with Diana Ross & Mariah Carey) as well as Pete Waterman who along with his Partners Matthew Stock & Scott Aitken co wrote hits for everyone from Rick Astley, Banarama, Dead Or Alive, and Princess. The Girls became Girls Aloud who are the most successful Group to come out of Reality TV with 21 Top Tens, Four Number Ones, and Six Platinum Albums, One True Voice The Boyband didn't make it unfortunately. It's legacy also continues with K Pop as well.
Love Yu2 yes in the first time probably in forever musicians were not limited by their color. By the mid 1960’s Motown acts we’re headlining huge shows, groups like The Temptations, Supremes & the Four Tops were appearing on TV
It reminds me of my mother, Father and Uncles, Cousins all over in 1965 when nI was a kid. Yes it was a hit and I play it today. The Marvelettes were on.
For who? The Supremes only had five in a row: “Where Did Our Love Go?”, “Baby Love”, “Come See About Me”, “Stop! In The Name Of Love”, and “Back In My Arms Again”. The rest came later.
I agree I have to remember that they were just kids because by 1970 they were only in their mid-twenties most of them it's kind of crazy they just dressed more mature and they were so polished they just seem older

"Since I Lost My Baby" was written by TWO of The Miracles: Smokey Robinson and Miracles bass singer Pete Moore. Most of the Temptations' early hits were written by members of The Miracles.(not just Smokey)
I love how the director of the show kept having the cameraman concentrate on that one student girl. She was soooo incredibly cute how she'd be a combination of bashful, upset and happy that the camera kept focusing in on her.
+Sheldon Stern Yep lest we forget Rockin Robin Seymore on " KEENER" radio WKNR. Saw lots of acts at the Green Lawn Grove ... in Romulus ... spent too many years say BUT DAD I CAN'T TURN IT DOWN ... IT'S SMOKEY!
Yes, that does look like the great Benny Benjamin on that. We can't forget the musicians who, on these recordings, were just as important as the singers but not given credit for their contributions. Benny, James Jamerson, Pistol Allen, Earl Van Dyke, Mike Terry, Paul Riser, Melvin Watson, Joe Messina, Ronnie White, Oriel Jones, Hank Cosby and many others. BTW, the alto player on the Supremes vid looks like Maurice King. He ran the Spinners live show, and trumpeter Gil Lasky ran the Temps show.
American history can get a little confusing at times when I run into features like this.. every time I see black related 60's inner-city excerpts, it's usually more times than ever, heart wrenching civil right related activity.. now here, I see blacks and whites HARMONIOUSLY working hand in hand building a masterpiece - 1965!! ..that's a lil confusing! 0:12 There's a missing member in this scene. The Miracles were a 5-member group for live appearances and a 6-member group for recording sessions The members were: William "Smokey" Robison, Ronnie White, Robert Rodgers(Smokey's brother-in-law), Warren "Pete" Moore and Marvin Tarplin. Smokey's wife, Claudette(Robert's sister) was heard on the early recordings but she did not tour with the group.
Actually there was a show called UpBeat with host Don Webster 1964-1971 that aired on WEWS channel 5. It had plenty of National artists that performed.
In addition to that, Berry Gordy was a great talent compared to Mitch Miller who was also a record producer and assistant for Columbia Records who had been produced lots of albums in the 50's and 60's as well as a series of "Sing-Along" albums and hosted his own TV show at the time. Berry Gordy was a true genius and he became the next Mitch Miller for Motown. As for the whole hour long show, it has some classic TV commercials in there.
Smokey Robinson and The Miracles were one of Berry Gordy's first and best singers on his record label. I do know Martha Reeves was Berry Gordy's Assistant or Secretary/Singer.
Never saw this before, but this special episode on the Motown Story was aired as part of "Teen Town", a short-lived syndicated music TV series hosted by Robin Seymour. It ran from 1965 until 1966 for just one season. It was the Detroit's version of "American Bandstand" but it was only in local syndication, but never carried it elsewhere in NYC. It has lots of great Motown artists as well as Berry Gordy, the producer and founder of Motown.
Interesting, I guess that a lot of markets had their own local “American Bandstand’ I’m from Cleveland OH and we had our local version called ‘Upbeat’ that aired on our local ABC network, sadly shortly after Otis Redding performed, him and his entourage left Cleveland and the plane crashed to their demise.
When they sang "My Girl", I see wy David felt like he sang better than everyone, he was standing alone. But when Marvin Gaye took Tammi Terell from David Rufin, He was upset and left, and sang "Since I lost my baby" and a whole album about Tami. David also started Hitting hard drugs and running with the wrong crowd that would pull him down. It was like a rolla coaster going up and down. But we still love David Rufin R.I.P. my brother david and Jimmie, Melvin, Eddie K.And Paul.R.I.P everybody.
Where you getting your info from? first off "since i lost my baby" was written by Smokey Robinson. Ruffin had nothing to do with the creative side of that song besides bringing it to life on record. Second he was physically abusive to Tammi that's probably one reason why they broke up. not because Marvin stole Tammi away from him. And third there was never proof that Tammi and Marvin were a couple. a few artists on Motown said they had more of a brother sister type relationship.. it could be argued that David was the best singer in the group but they would'nt of had that tempts sound without Eddie, Paul, Melvin, and Otis.
And Yes, David did abuse Tammi the same way he had abused drugs. But when we write musis, it all comes down to the one who sings that song to surface the airwaves.
26.57, Earl Van Dyke - piano, James Jameson - Bass, Benny Benjamin - Drums, Robert White?? - Guitar, unfortunately I can't name the horn players, but I assume Mike Terry is in there somewhere.
The song was written in Diane's key not Florence. It is Diane's voice that took it to No.1 along with five in a row. all Diane. and we the public Loved it.
Yes unfortunately back then they mainly focused on the Hits and the Artists who made them( Producers as well)! The Funk Brothers didn't get the credit or recognition until years later.
At 39:25 the white couple is totally square and being badly out-danced by the three black couples. Not trying to be mean or racist - I'm white anyway - but I just had to laugh at how stiff the white coupe looks.
I''m a millennial, and this makes me feel so emotional. This is the breath taking moment that impacted history forever! Motown! BlackExcellence

awesome show and so much talent there. berry Gordy and smokey are totally my inspirations to keep moving.
The Host of this show at Hitsville Detroit is doing a nice presentation for Motown Singers. He has a Great personality, and he's so kind and friendly.
To the Hip Hop performers: sit down and take notes on class, lyrics, and style. Yep, I said it.
Calm down. I can find songs here on UA-cam that was dirtier than most Hip Hop songs, and these songs came out in the 1920s, 30s and 40s.
Stevie Wonder is an example of someone who never allowed a handicap to handicap him and turned a challenge into a victory
Stevie should be an inspiration to people that complain about small things and setbacks.
Gaura Das & Ray Charles
He's so good, at 53:45 he starts playing harmonica even before its in his hands. That's talent.
HAPPY 60 ANNIVERSARY MOTOWN (JANUARY 12, 1959 - JANUARY 2019) [01/12/2019]

Those moves ..... They make it look so easy lol... I certainly would've fell on my face ! Thanks Motown Records and Berry Gordy😊✌🏿️🇺🇸

I danced along with my friends from Mumford High and Cass Tech. on this show a couple of times.
When did you go to high school?? I went to Cass Tech and lived in the Mumford neighborhood.
I went to Mumford in 1967. My dad was a publicist for Motown before becoming the president of the Hollywood and Beverly Hills NAACP.
Curious, what street did you live on? I assume you're on the west coast now. Are you or your family in the movie industry?
Woooow!! Your part of history!!
Carol McCoo Detroit in the house! I go to Cass
Wow this is History, loved it,the black couple dancing on He Was Really Saying Something, got off, this was true 60s,The Best

I believe the kids enjoyed Stevie the most because he was their age!
notice how this era looks older than they actually look. features wise.

A little Teen Town trivia. Teen Town aired on CKLW a Canadian TV and radio station located across the Detroit River in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Its funny how the host of the show has an obvious crush on Wanda from the Marvelettes.
Smokey Robinson and The Miracles were one of Berry Gordy's first and best singers on his record label. I do know Martha Reeves was Berry Gordy's Assistant or Secretary/Singer.
Interestingly enough Smokey never considered himself a legitimate singer. He always said he was a songwriter that faked a singing career.
Les Toil Not really. Because most rappers write their own lyrics...Smokey was a legitimate singer who never needed a ghost writer!
