- Footage of Partick, in the west end of Glasgow, during Coronavirus lockdown in May 2020. Quiet street scenes include Dumbarton Road shops, boarded-up public houses, Byres Road, Crow Road, Partick Cross, Crathie Court, and pub exteriors, like Fiddlers Bar, The Rosevale Tavern, The Quarter Gill, Storm Queen, Victoria Bar, The Lismore, The Dolphin, and The Three Judges.
Included is a brief look at the devastating Hurricane of January 1968 and its impact on Partick housing, like the building at 555 Dumbarton Road where 4 people were killed. Also included are memories of Partick in the 1960s.
Just realised you have loads more videos on Scotland , I will be exploring them all . A seriously good channel and vastly underrated 👌
Many thanks.
You mention thornwood primary at 14-22 I was the Jannie there from 2005 till 2018 when I retired. Loved my time there still pop in and have a chat with staff. A smashing place to work and live and have fond memories of it
I remember - and we're talking the early 1960s - a pupil being dragged into the class by the Janitor. Clearly didn't want to be in school, so was physically hauled along the ground on his back, and into the class. No messing around in those days.
Great Video Ed and god bless the Glasgow people, including others in areas of Scotland who lost their lives and homes on that day.
I was 20 years old and remember that terrible Sunday on Abercrombie Street when I witnessed the devastation.
Thanks again to rescue services who did what they are expert at.
Thanks Lochlainn. That storm changed many lives. Have a great 2022.
Thanks Ed always good to hear what you have to say about things.
Loving all your videos Eddie 👍
MAGIC!! I was born and raised in Crawford Street in 1956 and this video brought back so many memories of the bridge over the railway to catch the ferry over to Govan to visit an Aunt. Church St. School just up on the right-hand side of Byres Rd with its swimming pool where I was schooled. I remember visits to the library, the swing park, and I even remember going to the nursery that was next to the church in Rosevale St., where like you I joined the Boy's Brigade. What price can you put on such memories? Thank you!
Many thanks. Hopefully not too long before we're back to normal. Take care.
I hear Range Rovers don’t come with indicators. They’re apparently not designed to travel on the inside two lanes on motorways either 😑
These images are now over 1½ years old - what has happened since?
I used to live in Whiteinch, roughly from 2010 - 2015, and I often visited the pubs in Partick, particularly the Quarter Gill. Every night of the week there was folk in there. Also other pubs were important meeting places. Deoch an Dorus was another good pub. Shutting the pubs down in Partick would kill the character of the place.
I never returned to Britain since I left in 2015, but if I would, I would be afraid to go back to Partick, because there might not even be much left of it!
Pubs are certainly struggling during this pandemic. All the best for 2022 Jan.
It does indeed look quite forlorn, as you say. Most cities do right now. Good weather has brought a lot of people out so our own little seaside town doesn’t look quite so abandoned these days. Bars & restaurants here in British Columbia are being permitted to open shortly as long as they have appropriate social distancing practices in place. So, maybe that will bring more life back to our towns & cities. Good to see you out and about!
Realistically, I don't see how bars and restaurants can survive with social distancing. They weren't making great profits before. A few months ago I imagined this would all be over by June. I'm now looking at next year. The virus will take a whole year of our lives, and more, and sadly it has also taken lives, something we sometimes forget as we strive to get back to normality. Take care.
Thank you Eddy
Brilliant 👍
Many thanks.
I am going to Scotland soon my great grandad was from Partick was wondering is it worth a visit?
Google's street view will let you see what Partick looks like. There are plenty of museums and visitor attractions nearby. Good luck.
@@EdExploresScotland thanks I will try that. I am visiting Edinburgh and was wondering if it was worth a visit as my great grandfather came from there. Thanks very much for getting back to me
Ed, the church you mention in Rosevale St, was it St Brides at all? My grandparents were married there in 1906.
I'm not sure what it was called, but did a bit of rooting around on the web, and it does appear to have been called that. It was the only church in Rosevale Street. UA-cam is understandably cautious where web links are concerned, but nevertheless here's a link to a 1932 OS map of the area, taken from the website of the National Library of Scotland. The church is near the middle of the page. maps.nls.uk/view/82891713
Thank you very much Ed! Yes I see thats the only church on Rosevale St. I will have a look on google maps to see what is there now. ☺☺
Just realised I've misspelled 'omit'. How much worse can things get? My advice would be to always have a huge paper Chambers dictionairy the size of a small garden shed somewhere at hand.
Ed Explores Scotland If you’re going to misspell something, “dictionary” probably isn’t the word I’d choose...😉
I've been a tad mischievous here - not something I normally do!!! - in that I deliberately misspelled (isn't 'misspelled' a hard word to spell?) 'dictionary'. That old trusty paper and very weighty Chambers dictionary is far wiser than all yon online spelling stuff. Personally, I reckon 'dictionairy' is a far better spelling.
Great
Ed. I'm a smiler age, maybe ten years younger, but am old enough to know not to get too flustered by cars making mistakes and other small shit.
I'm a bloody great driver but I still can and do make mistakes.
That said, I would define myself as a cyclist first and foremost.
Lighten up mate. We will be dead soon. Enjoy the moments.
Well done Eddy. Some Olympic gold-standard whinging there.
Many thanks. I'm pretty much an expert in that sort of thing.
Do not allow yourself to become frightened by your fellow man. They(99.99%) are not out to get you.
Will someone, please, give the chalk hashtag an apostrophe?
And an 'e' of course.
Good stuff sir ,the thing that angers me most is adults on bicycles on the bloody pavements, good thing I don’t have a shotgun with me ,ha ha
LOL those tortured joggers
A good bit of moaning 🤣. I wonder how many pubs, restaurants and shops will remain boarded up even when lock down ends completely. 🤔😒
It's a painful thought.
You'll need to buy a disabled toilets key from amazon (it's above board)just means you can always gain access to disabled toilets.
It's not coffee cup holders 🙈 it's for kids bottles or juice cups 😂
I think when you mention people's expressions...many are expressions of anxiety 😔
Don't start me on keys for toilets!
