  • I normally don't like day trips as it reminds me of working in an office driving to and from the airport everyday. This was an exception as it fit a hole in my schedule and allowed me to get a landing in.

    It’s crazy I work your plane that day 😂 I love seen the aircraft leaving safe out of the maintenance base. Thank you for your videos and showing the real life of aviation.

    As a student pilot I always appreciate how transparent you are about pay, it serves as a motivator to help me know that if I keep at it I'll be able to provide a life for my family. However, I especially appreciate you sharing your first pay stub with us today because it reminded me that while the hope for great pay in the future is motivating, that I do this because I love to fly and that to be paid anything to do what I love is worth it. Thanks for another great video!

    Loved the video,very educational, thank you. Flew AA136 arriving LHR on Friday from LAX. Poor visibility on approach and crew initiated a go around. Superb to hear the engines spool up again. Climbed back to 6K ft. Went around and landed no issue around 10 minutes later. Apparently aircraft landing in front had not exited the runway fast enough.

    Hi Darren, am curious to know if you’ve been able to also fly any of your company’s US - Australia routes?
    I grew up in neighboring Papua New Guinea (neighboring country directly north of Australia) and find it fascinating to know what this route is like to fly. Thanks in advance.

    When we had a maintenance hub at Alliance, I was a a check airman and had to ferry 75/76's and the 777. We only had the 200's then. My record off to on time was 8 minutes, however, a flight rarely if ever went off on time out of Maintenance and usually 6 to 8 hours later. I have actually gone illegal waiting for the airplane to get fixed. Thinking back to 1987, I was dual qualified as engineer on the727 and DC-10. One day on reserve, I got sent to Tulsa to fly with the Tulsa Test pilots. In one day we test flew a 727-100, a -200, a -200B, a DC-10-10 and a DC-10-30. The last one the Captain scraped the tail on rotation, that put Kybosh on the remainder of the day. I was glad to get home to Dallas.

    Aside from it being a tiring and life risk taking job, the amount of knowledge, training and exams that pilots have to go through regularly... They deserve all the pay they can get. Just going through PPL as an engineer. I respect all of the airline pilots, and how much money and effort to get to that point. It's definitely not for someone with a weak stomach and weak heart!

    Waiting to the end of the video to comment other than my original observations. From an old timers perspective, the reliance on the automation is worrisome. We did all this stuff in jets with three engines doing the calculations in our head. I had a new F/O out of school in a 757 on an all nighter into Miami. I asked him, do you think we should set an approach it the box? We had been cleared LAX direct MIA. No approach. At 150 miles I queried if there was a plan he had developed that would get us down anywhere near Miami. He had never heard of the rule of three. Luckily the 75 with spoilers out can imitate a 727 at idle.

    • @geekontheflightdeck
      @geekontheflightdeck  4 дні тому

      Back then accident and incident rates were much higher. There’s a balance of automation of skill.

      As far as takeoff performance numbers it is normal to get them from the company to deal with all the contingencies. There’s a manual process but it doesn’t take into account known terrain issues. I’ve never flown a jet where we were allowed/taught to do them in our head.

      @@geekontheflightdeck Point taken and I was probably a little too loose with the top of our heads comment. I meant we had table top charts and books with performance figures. ACARS was just for out/ off/ on and in times. No printer. I enjoy your work, keep doing what you’re doing!

    Not sure if there is enough for a video on this, but do you find there to be default topics of conversation in flight and are they different if you are flying a narrowbody domestic vs widebody international? One would assume politics and religion are best avoided, but hours on end in a cubical with someone, could lead down some interesting tangents.
