I still find it so funny that i caught my first fall on camera haha.
Don’t worry! I am fine, I had no major injuries. It was a soft and slow fall onto sand.
For anyone curious: The fall was a result of a lot of things. I was busy learning how to canter so I had never felt the transition between a trot to a canter before, and I had never felt a canter before, so when the horse changed its movement it scared me quite a bit. Also I was riding a old horse, he was about 19 years old and he had a leg injury when he was younger, and the horse very clearly didn’t want to canter. My trainer kept on telling me to get him into a canter. I tried for 20 minutes to get him into a canter and when he did begin to canter I got off balance and that threw him off balance which caused me to fall. Side note- I will talk about this in more detail one day but I was very inexperienced when this all happened. I now know that it was wrong to carry on forcing a horse to do something that they very clearly didn’t want to do. Especially if they are clearly tired and in pain. I was also definitely not ready to canter at all. I couldn’t even trot properly. This trainer pushed me and put me, a complete beginner, into advanced group lessons. She would leave the arena 10 minutes into my lesson to go talk to other trainers or watch other peoples lessons. I was left with tasks to do with no guidance from her and the only way I actually learned something was from watching people ride horses on youtube. The day of this fall, I was in an advanced group lesson and she spent the entire lesson paying attention to the advanced riders and only talked to me when she was shouting at me for not kicking or hitting the horse hard enough to get him to canter. When I asked what position I should be in when I canter, she told me I should stand up. After my fall she helped me onto the horse and then just completely left the arena and didn’t come back. My parents had to tell me that the lesson was over. I have since stopped working with this trainer and have stopped doing lessons at these stables. I have even stopped using crops because of my bad experiences at these stables. ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR HORSE AND TAKE IT SLOW WHEN LEARNING TO RIDE!!!

Hi guys! For anyone who wants to know what happened please read the description :)
Edit: Also I am aware that I shouldn’t post in the trot before the canter or go into light seat during the canter (when learning). The instructor literally told me I had to stand up and lean forward in the canter, I now know that it is wrong- I only learned how wrong that is once I moved to a different riding school. I am also aware that it is better to learn to canter on the lunge line (which is what i did when I moved riding schools).
I appreciate the help but I was just confused at the time and doing what the instructor told me to do. If you are learning to canter please read the advice in the comments because it is really helpful :)

a little tip for someone who has gone through smth like this
When ever ur not ready for a canter or your horse starts zooming just sit tight in the seat and try calm the horse
Don’t yank the reins or the situation might get worse
Don’t let go of the reins
Try a pat or some noises but if u cant just sit tight and wait for it to stop or for someone else to come to the rescue OR fall in a position that wouldn’t hurt u or the horse
If u fall try aim for the back if u have a vest :D
And also if ur falling try fall behind or next to the horse..NEVER INFRONT coz the horse might run u over :o
    Thanks for reading xx❤

just want to clarify for anyone reading... this horse wasn't taking off, it's just that it's hindlegs weren't quick enough for a smooth trot - canter transition here. it's much easier for horses to build a little energy in the trot and then go into the canter, which is what this horse did.
no need for panic at all. please do not try to jump off the horse or wait for someone to come to the rescue, or try to squeeze your legs to hold on, that will mess up your seat.
      *here's what i would do...*
      1. ask the horse to come back (probably using the reins, as this is a lesson horse)
      2. hold the horse at a slightly slower trot and ask for canter, don't release with your heels until the horse picks up canter and don't let the horse go any more forward then the slow trot you've set.
      3. as soon as the horse picks up canter, release your heels and pet the horse, they did good c:
*alternatively, if your only goal is to get into the canter/if you're a beginner...*
      1. put more energy into the trot, get a faster trot
      2. sit two beats and ask for canter
this will give you a smoother transition into the canter. not great but it's a good place to start and this makes it easier for the horse.
jumping off of a horse is a LAST RESORT, and can cause more damage than just staying on a horse would. your mindset when something you didn't expect happens should never be "my horse is out of control". if you are focused, your horse will be too. chances are, if you ignore it and keep asking for something, your horse will respond.

as a rider, you probably know that we need to do our best to stay calm in a situation and not assume bad things about our horse and panic.
please be careful as to not scare young riders who may see this comment and think that a horse going at a slightly faster trot is cause for panic.
i understand that you're helping but also try to think of how someone who's not as experienced as you might take that comment.
hope your riding journey is going well, best luck!!!

I read the description - best method to begin learning to canter is on lunge line! You don't need to worry about controlling the horse and getting it up to canter yourself if that's your first time ever cantering. You'll get used to transitions and canter movement, correct your seat and then you can do it by yourself. That's the best way
My first canter was not on lunge though, and it was on a small pony. I could barely trot back then and it was one of my first 10 lessons. And they got me to canter. I almost fell off but somehow held on and didn't fall xD all my next canters were on lunge line, just this year I started cantering by myself and even jumped a few times. I'm really proud of my progress of this year
My first fall was back then on one of my first lessons too, because 1) I got other pony than I used to have
    2) he was a very hyperactive 4 year old and I was stressed bc of that
    3) I got him to trot and he tripped over something, the final reason why I fell off, or rather peacefully slid off onto a nice green grass
This year I had my first 'good' fall, because I was riding a just broken 3yr old to a forest and she got spooked and bolted. It was a very soft fall
Then I fell off another two times, one because I was jumping a log on a young draft horse and she lowered her head to the ground after the jump (I've jumped the same log on that horse 2 times before and we did great), and second fall was because I wasn't ready for the jump and didn't hold on after it
Don't worry, falling off is a part of horse riding and we all just need to get used to it and learn how to fall as safe as we can

I have a horse that is 18.2 and I was 8 and I tried to dismount and landed weirdly causing me to fall. It was so painful but hilarious xD I couldn't stop laughing but because I was in pain the laughing made it worse xD
I have not fallen of my horse yet and I only learned to canter a couple weeks ago, Its alot harder that it looks isn't it!
Even though you are only learning you look FABULOUS on that horse and if you ever get hate, don't let it bring you down. Your a great rider and that horse did not deserve to be told to canter when he (I think) was in pain. It wasn't your fault and your trainer shouldn't have made you do that :)
But keep up the good work, your looking amazing :)

  • @kyleesmith1900
    @kyleesmith1900 2 роки тому +5

Just a tip: Instead of posting into the canter, try sitting the trot and then squeezing into a canter, posting the trot and trying to get into the canter is a lot harder for you and your horse as you are thrown off balance. An easier way (as many others said) is to start on a lungeline first so you don't have to worry about steering. My boy (21 yrs old) is just like that horse, doesn't love getting into a canter. Just takes lots of leg, it very well could be his age, but from seeing this I think he's just a lazy horse. 19 isn't too old for a horse.

No hate but I never learned to canter by being on a lunge line. It's harder because the horse is constantly turning which can, sometimes knock your balance so in my opinion it's harder, when I tried to canter the first time I was bouncing all over the place. The second time I cantered in my entire life was with no lunge line and now I'm onto jumping I've only ben cantering for what 2 weeks and I've already nailed it because I canter down the long side of the arena. No hate just saying you could do it with a lead rope down a long side. It also can feel safer because there's someone right next to you. But maybe it's just easier for me.

My first fall was a bit more dangerous, but my horse kinda saved me, it so happened that we were all cantering in a herd, about 20 to 30 horses were cantering together, I don't know what triggered my horse but it stopped midway and refused to move, later my trainer came to me on his horse and pulled on my horses rein, by the time this happened we galloped to join the herd but I suddenly felt like passing out, I fell unconscious and fell off my horse, the good thing was that I was at the last row since my horse stopped midway everyone proceeded forward, or-else I would have been walked over by a bunch of horses. I didn't hurt myself too much but experienced a short term memory loss and my hips hurt severely. I got back on much stronger though. Tbh such experiences give you so much confidence and strength.

Most of my falls have been bareback, or when I was riding double behind my sister. Once my sister asked if we wanted to race through our pasture. (we were bareback) I had a gut feeling this wasn't a good idea, but I knew I couldn't let fear control me, so I said yes. Sure enough, we were just starting to gallop side by side when my mare dead stopped and threw her head down, resulting in tossing me over her head! She then proceeded to run away. My sister was worried about me laying face down on the ground but I only yelled "catch her!!!" I was fine, nothing my chiropractor couldn't fix! Always follow your gut!!

When I got bucked off a horse for the first time, (around two weeks ago) all I was trying to do was trot. Next thing I knew, the horse I was riding loped and then started bucking. Someone was riding behind me and her horse bucked too! She stayed on though. Plus, she has like two years on me.Even though I was sore for two days after that, it was honestly kind of fun since it didn’t hurt that much when I fell. This all happened BEFORE I got more comfortable with cantering. I haven’t been able to go since that day because I got mildly sick last week.
BY THE WAY, I got the whole thing on camera too!

So I'm a western rider and I know that the two are *very* different but my first time loping (western term for canter) was in a round pen. Thankfully, I rode a 20 year old Gelding named Louie and he was my favorite.
The round pen was my enemy for so long because I spent months in it working on where I'm looking, feet positions, using spurs correctly, and it was overall the safest place to be.
In the event I fell, or got thrown off I'd either hit the wooden pole in the center, fall off into the sand/dirt mixture, or hit the "wall" of the round pen which was like metal bars.
So yes, I'd suggest a lead line if you're on a younger horse for sure but if you have the option to ride another horse just to practice your cantering definitely try that if go in a round pen.
After about 7-8 months if riding Louie, whose a 20 year old gelding who is always falling asleep, I moved to this beautifully gelding named Romeo and both horses are about 15 hands and I'm about 5'4 so the heights are perfect. Romeo is mostly a trail/birthday horse so my trainer and Louie spent months training *me* and now is my trainer and I training *the horse*.

Sis i am so proud of you.👏 You are SO tough, there isn’t a whole lot of people that would attempt a canter unless they where ready, fall off and STAND back up. That also wasn’t a terrible fall either pretty graceful for your first time! Just remember it isn’t embarrassing to fall off because falling off turns you into a champion and it happens all the time. I’ve been riding for 14 year’s and i still fall off one time i fell off at a state show in-front of everybody. But that didn’t stop me from climbing on the fence and getting back on. Just remember you are wearing your helmet, you are doing wonderful so far, a tip that i used to think to myself because to be honest I’ve taught myself mostly everything i never had instructors the only thing i have an instructor for is for dressage but anyways enough about that story. If you don’t have an instructor or a trusted friend or ur parent to help you out on a lunge line. Just build trust with your horse having a bond with your horse is a big deal because when there is trust involved then u can basically do anything with your horse (I’m not saying go jump a 5 foot jump and trust that you can stay on because horses are 1,000 pound animals and they don’t mean to but they can crush you with they’re own body weight) but just get in a round pen if you have one be very balanced in the trot first and if you don’t wanna fly forward if you never felt a canter before just lean back a little bit because its like a rocking horse motion just to get the feel of it. Of course don’t lean back all the time remember keep ur heels down ur back straight all that fun stuff but anyways! Your getting there i’m proud of you. ❤️

it’s probably better to be on a lunge line to start, so you don’t have to worry much about steering, more just worrying about your position and having a good transition, but you did a great job!

My first fall? This little 31 year old (the only reason he wasn't retired was because he was in good health and had good teeth and health, and vet was fine with him continuing to be ridden) chestnut pony gelding was trotting up to the trot poles with me, then decided to turn into a 4 year old, not an experienced 31 year old school pony and leaped over 4 trot poles then landed 4 feet square and didn't move anymore... I flew off the front... I was fine and he was fine, and this was back when I hadn't cantered before, about 3 years ago. I have since fallen off lots of times and you get used to it, if you get it on camera its almost fun (or at least funny)

It’s ok girl I fell to when I tried cantering about 3 weeks ago and I’m still trying to build my confidence. My experience was that I was still trying to post when I went to canter and so I fell. I also cantered on the long rail and ding canter in the corner like I was supposed to, I got scared and was still trying to get the horse in a canter but ended up cantering on the long rail instead of the corner. I learned that it happens to everyone and you just need to get back on and try again

tip. when your asking for a canter from a trot try not to post while asking. ive made that mistake to many times. if you need any help sitting the trot then i suggest either asking your instuctor is they can help you or ask a western insructor to help you. i know it will help because in western riding you sit in the saddle and you arent suppost to post.

One thing to help in cantering is, not only being on a lunge lune, but hold onto the saddle with your inside hand and hold onto the reins in the outside. This will help you feel more secure as well as help you get the movement of the canter. Once you're comfortable with the movement, switch to hold the reins instead of the saddle and then after that transition to off the lunge line. 😁

I ride western and I was cantering my friends horse bareback, and she has a bit of a fast canter and when I was slowing her down to a trot it was really bumpy and I fell off, but I’m okay! I also did read the desc and at my stables they have a 25 year old horse and still use him in experienced riders lessons so they get him to canter. He hasn’t gone on vacation at my stables yet (vacation is when they are sent to the owner of the stables house for sometime to get a break) the bad thing is in an accident he got part of his tongue ripped off so they sewed it back on and now it just hangs out of his mouth and he can’t feel his tongue there anymore. I really think they should retire him. His name is Rick. He is too old for lessons. (My stable is a western stable)

Best method to stay on is by not kicking but hold on to the mane and if your leaning forward then sit down and lean backwards not to far if your horse is bucking and he won’t stop turn him in a circle because horses can not buck if there body is turned and you might need to make a emergency get off if it’s really bad❤️

Just a tip! When your asking a horse to canter it’s better to do sit trot then the horse understands to canter. Your hands were great though! Of course there was some pulling when you became unbalanced but other wise allowing the horse to go forward. Unfortunately i see pulling on the reins and kicking at the same time way to often.

FINALLY, someone else I can relate to! I also had a horrible trainer, who never payed attention to me, since I was placed with beginners instead of those at my level.
Due to that trainer she made me canter when I was not ready, even though I thought I was, I suffered a pretty hard fall, in turn fracturing my collarbone. I became so terrified of cantering, because I kept thinking I was going to fall, we luckily switched trainers quite a few months ago. I'm making more progress than before.
After that fall, I felt so unsafe at my trainers stable, and lost a lot of confidence in myself as a rider.

You have to be really strong in your legs. Squeeze that saddle tel you are locked there. Your heels also weren’t down, that is important for posture. Strengthen your legs, remember that pain and fear DOES not matter. Those are the words i have to repeat to myself. Their WILL be pain and lots of it. Just push through and pursue your dreams. When you do learn to canter it will be worth it. It is flying without wings.

My horse is 17 hands so it was extremely scary. My first fall and im a beginner it was horrible. im still quite shaken up from it. If you look on my profile you can see my horse. He is called Harvey. The next time i try a canter which will be awhile as im quite scared to do so i will be asking to be on a lunge rope. It was not my horses fault it was mine. he only did what he was thought to have been told to do. I did get back on Harvey but only walking and slow trots.
