  • Ride along with me on the Mogollon ( Mow-Gee-On) Rim that rises 7000 feet above sea level and 4000 feet above Payson Arizona. I provides some beautiful views and overlooks from the pines of the Coconino and Apache/Sitgreaves National Forests.

    The Rim is my old stomping grounds, have spent countless nights up there when I lived in Phx. Used to camp next to a creek near Potato Lake just off FR 300. Unfortunately it was all out of a 4x4; I have my Tiger now but living in the SF Bay Area. Keep up the videos, takes me back. Might take a ride down this spring, maybe bump into ya. Man, the trees lost from that fire makes me very sad.

    Love the vid. I just bought a Super Tenere in Tucson, and I hope to get up to all these spots you make videos on. I can't find Forest Road 300 on any map though? I've been back and forth on 260 a hundred times. Where do you pick it up from where you start 260 on 17?

    • @azdesertdog
      @azdesertdog  7 років тому +1

      Congrats on the new bike. I usually go in from the west side off AZ87.There is s dign that says FR300 Rim Road. Off 260 on the east side there is a sign at the top of the rim across from the ranger station. Pick up a forest map they are helpful. Thanks for watching and have fun!

    What a great place to go camping. That view from the rim is stunning! You found an excellent spot to camp! Liking that orange tent. So, the gun...are you allowed to shoot someone in self-defense if they mess with you out there? What about wild animals...you see many out there? Great vid, az!

      Thanks WNH. It is worth a trip when in AZ. Hah the tent is a $15 kiddie tent from Wally World. It has lasted 5 years. I carry to defend myself God forbid anything happens.

    I'm assuming the rim is plenty high enough to get snow. What time of year is FS Rd. 300 usually clear and open? Most of the best rides here in Colorado aren't clear until late May-early July, so I need to head to UT/AZ in the spring/early summer. TIA

    • @azdesertdog
      @azdesertdog  4 роки тому

      The rim is between 7500 and 8000 feet. It opens around Memorial Day maybe sooner it crosses two National Forests Coconino and Sitgreaves. Also check out Sycamore Canyon.

    When you headed up 260 did you hit the forest road 300 before Payson or did you ride all the way up to 87 and then make your way down? I think you went up 87 as the view is on your right hand side? Headed up there next weekend after your inspirational video; cold weather be damned :) Thx again.

    That snowmobile sign and your comment had me laughing! Beautiful scenery! I am wondering, are there critters you need to be aware of in the rim country? I am curious because you always seem to carry. Great camp site!! I am same way with heights. If I have good footing under me, I am fine...but climbing around on a ladder or scaffolding, not thanks. Once again, you have piqued my interest to visit AZ sometime.

    • @azdesertdog
      @azdesertdog  8 років тому +1

      Hah I think that is one of three in AZ the other two are full of bullet holes. There are bear and mountain lions up there. I camp safe plus they are managed pretty well by the FS. I always carry for snakes and two legged snakes.

    What's the verdict on the Tiger? I like them but have never ridden one. I wanted to buy the 1200 Explorer a few years back but ended up with the KLR because of my career budget. Triump shop is right next door to the Beemer shop up here so I always go look at them whenever we take some Beemers to get work done.
    Thanks for taking us along. Drywall is up, paint soon then all down hill from there. I've got Arizona on my mind, just saying. You and A2W come hang with the Utah crew soon.

    • @azdesertdog
      @azdesertdog  8 років тому

      Tiger is thumbs up so far. I was close on a 2012 990 but couldn't get to a deal. I picked the 800 because it seemed like it was between the 690 and 1190. In about a month I'll have enough saved for the proper tires. Then it is game on. Looking for ward to your future freedom. We need to ride for sure.

  • @MrRojoneck
    @MrRojoneck 8 років тому

    Freakin awesome video! I was vapor locked and totally sucked into it. I don't think I blinked once and I have a puddle of drool below me. Such a cool view and the video served no justice on what it actually looked like being up there. A campfire would've made that place golden....and a little trout stream nearby.
    You're going to have to start rating all these Mountain House meals. 1-10 on everything. Texture, flavor, recommend/not recommend, etc. That way you can do all the trail and error so I don't have to. Beef stroganoff...that would be a tough one for me because Mrs Rojoneck is an amazing cook and beef stroganoff is one of my favorite things she makes. I always struggle eating stuff that isn't hers. You know what I mean. I compare everything to how she makes it.
    Which tent do you have? I still need to find me one. Problem is I'm 6'4" and like my space but want something lightweight and most likely a two person for gear, fishing poles and ammunition stockpiles.

    • @azdesertdog
      @azdesertdog  8 років тому

      Haha Thanks Rojo. I was going to do a fire but didn't mat to waste my water to put it out in the AM. The Mountain Hose are one level above TV dinners. I am not the type to bring a bunch of food and other stuff. Small, light efficient. After a day on the road the taste good and fill me up. My tent is a $15 kiddie tent from Wally World. I am 6'1" and I can sleep diagonally and nearly all my gear fits.You might not have a good night in one. Besides I normally don't have to deal with rain.

      I know this is an old thread...
      but I live in AZ and have camped on the Mogollon Rim and know some of the rules. When there is a drought happening in the forests the Forest Service, due to the fire danger, often closes the forests to recreational use like camping, fishing and even riding down the forest roads. This happens less often in the Coconino National Forest on top of the rim at higher elevation, but happens almost every summer in Tonto National Forest below the rim.
      During a moderate drought the forest service often closes the forests to what is called 'open camping' but may allow camping in developed camping grounds but not allow camping fires.
      During severe drought they close the forests to all activity.
      I've witnessed some of the raging forest fires in the Mazatzal Wilderness from a distance and it was spectacular in a sad way.
      These fires out run a man, thus no access during times of drought.
