  • APRIL FOOLS DAY
Where did April Fools start? People say it started around 500 years ago because some places celebrated New Year's day on April the 1st. Some guy called Pope Gregory the 13th decided to switch calendars to the Gregorian calendar, so the start of the year changed to January 1st. And anyone who still celebrated New Years in April was seen as a fool. There have also been examples of April Fools pranks before that time. A poem from 1561 talks about a nobleman who sends his servants out to do a bunch of foolish jobs on April 1st. And even earlier in 1508, French poet Eloy d'Amerval made what's thought to be one of the very first references to April Fool's day. And all these years later people are still celebrating it.
    ZELENSKY
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been given a standing ovation in Australian parliament. It came after the President gave a live speech to members of parliament talking about the war in his country and warning about the impact Russia's invasion could have on us and the rest of the world. He also asked for help from the government. And Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced Australia will be sending armoured vehicles to Ukraine.
    SPORT
The Aussie cricket team lost their match against Pakistan during the second round of the One Day International series in Lahore. Despite Australia's best efforts the hosts marched to their highest ever successful run chase levelling the series at 1-all. They'll go head-to-head again in the tie-breaking match tomorrow. Aussie golfer Minjee Lee is off to a flying start at the first women's golf major of the year. A bogey-free round of six-under 66 at the Chevron Championship in California has her tied for the lead with American Jennifer Kupcho. Minjee is hoping to be the first Australian to win the event since 2006. It's been an interesting time at the Miami Open Nick Kyrgios is facing a hefty fine for his behaviour in his latest match where he lost to Italian Jannik Sinner. There was a bit of swearing, then smashing his racquet, and yelling at the umpire which ends up at nearly $50,000. On another court Norwegian Casper Ruud amazed the crowd with this stylish catch. Did it benefit his game in any way? No. But it looked cool! and he won anyway. Nice!
    GLOW IN THE DARK BADMINTON
I know that the dark makes things famously easy to miss. But not if you've got some glowing action! This glow in the dark badminton court in Malaysia was set up to get more people into sport after all the COVID lockdowns. And it's got GLOWING reviews.
    SPIDERS
Some spiders can be tough to spot but it's tough to miss these big guys! Colombian authorities seized more than 140 TARANTULAS being smuggled into Mexico to be sold illegally as pets. Don't worry they're now being well taken care of by wildlife experts who will find them a new home!
    SPOT THE DOG
It's hard not to spot this robot guard dog named Spot! It has the important job of protecting the famous volcanic ruins of Pompeii in Italy! Spot and its drone friend keep watch for illegal relic hunter even at night!
    Whatta clever boy.
