Railfanning in Mount Vernon, IL - July 9th, 2021

Finally! I have returned to Mount Vernon for the first time in two years, after being on hold due to pandemic reasons. Only got one day of railfanning out of this trip due to scheduling, but it was good to get back out here.
Not too much has changed with the lines out here, except for the bell replacements on the Union Pacific Casey Avenue, and some of the UP trains have seen routing changes, and reductions. Due to this, NS has been running more trains than UP. UP MYCPB no longer runs on the Mount Vernon Sub. MYCEW has been abolished, and moved with MYCPB onto the Villa Grove and Pana Subs since they don't work the yard in Salem.
That leaves you with the local UP LSG-54 which works the General Tire, and occasionally goes down to Marion, IL, plus MNLTT, MTTNL, and MSMPB in the manifest category. The intermodals occasionally detour on the Chester Sub if there's track work going on the MTV Sub.
NS was also pretty good. 167 had a really interesting power move! These BNSF Dash 9's were on their way to GECX as their leasing has expired, then NS D76 had an admiral cab rebuild, and a high hood GP38-2 together! MVL-1 was also seen on its return to McLeansboro, IL.

I really enjoyed this video as I grew up within walking distance from there and spent many days hanging around the old MoPac Operator's office there at the diamond

Man I remember as a little kid seeing waaayyyy more UP than NS. Now when I go to Mount Vernon UP hardly runs and I get nothing but NS. NS usually gets 8 a day and 6 a day on the UP

Yeah, I get what you’re saying. I hate that the Union Pacific line is weakening.
