The Drug War is a Lie. It's Time to

- 50 years ago, President Richard Nixon declared a war on drugs, proclaiming drug abuse as "public enemy number one" in the United States. Today, it's never been clearer that the real enemy is the drug war itself, and the countless harms that it has caused. Decriminalizing all drugs is a step we must take towards a healthier future, where compassion and care replace fear and stigma. Join us as we #DecriminalizeDrugs and build a world #AfterTheDrugWar.
The Drug Policy Alliance is building a world without the drug war where people who use drugs are supported, not punished. We’re building a world where drug policy is grounded in evidence, health, equity, and human rights. Join us: drugpolicy.org/ .

We need full legalization, but to decriminalize is a step in the right direction and something Biden supports.
Completely agree, but I'm glad the new bill they will propose to Congress is a bill for decriminalization. We may have a shot of the bill passing, by just a vote or 2 more. Now, if it said legalize all drugs then it would be much less unlikely to pass decriminalization has to happen first, mainly so that the assholes of society can see someone who struggles with addiction and meet them without a prison record om them forever.
Such a wedge strategy can easily backfire and cause further attitude polarization via distrust.
It's better to demonstrate how drug laws aren't really conservative, and any reason to keep responsible gun ownership legal would apply to responsible drug use too.
On the conservative front, legalization advocates ought to demonstrate how regardless of one's recreational or medical intent, using responsibly is what actually matters for society.
@@Meta_Myself I don't really think that would backfire. Based on many polls of American citizens, as well as the public words of of people in Congress, it is probably the best strategy. Many politicians and other citizens are now the majority for decriminalization of drugs; however, when full legalization is brought up, it seems to anger many of those same people. Proposing legalization now would likely divide members of Congress even more than the division they experience now.
@@Meta_Myself But I do agree with the idea of demonstrating why the war on drugs has actually done the complete opposite that was intended when it began.
Also, in reference to my other reply to your comment, I wanted to say I think proposing legalization is bad right now. One of the biggest reasons of all for this is: congress is split so badly when discussing changing, adding, or amending laws. So, once you have the ones who identify as Republicans hear "We need to fully legalize drugs", then they would likely make a snap judgment of no ( simply because they don't like big changes suggested by the Democrats: this also happens vice versa) and not pay attention to the reasons why whatsoever.

There's no single metric that improved since the drug war began.
I'm telling everyone I know about this legislation. I don't fully agree with the politics, but I absolutely agree that we need drug decriminalization as soon as possible. 50 years was irresponsible of us as a country to let our government do what they've done, and at this point, doing nothing should be considered criminal.
Decriminalization allows the black market to thrive.
Why not just legalize?
I think it's because it seems too outrageous to the really conservative people (but not all). When it comes to talking to older and more conservative people, saying we should legalize all drugs really pisses them off. But with decriminalization, most listen to why and think it's an interesting idea, but afraid it would make things work. So if we can decriminalize for a while, that group of people would see how beneficial it is. Then, the may be more receptive to legalization. But I'm with you, I think we need full legalization and now.

Legalise.
I didn't ruin my life with drugs, the system did. I lost jobs and my family.
Move to Portland I hear things are good there 🤣
Follow the working framework used in Portugal.

The only thing that decriminalization achieves is that it reduces one's fear of prosecution if they choose to seek help related to drug use. That said, this is a very miniscule piece of the whole pie of prohibition's problems.
Decriminalization does not make drugs regulated, pure, accurately measured, or safe. Legalization is truly the only option.
If usage becomes more normalized, if it was only the stigma affecting them and their health wasn’t declining I wouldn’t see why they would only seek therapy then. Many services assure that they won’t surrender you to police if you tell them of illegal substance use on the presumption you’re seeking rehabilitation, you can get lawyers involved if they were lying at all about that…
Decriminalization is merely another form of prohibition & achieves very little. It does absolutely nothing to make drugs safer. What we really need is legalization.
How about...decriminalization along with personal responsibility for your use of substances as you wish. If you break the law otherwise (i.e. stealing, driving under the influence, robbing someone, public nuisance, etc.), you are penalized for breaking those laws. NOT, we tax citizens even more to create programs for you to make the choices that you make to use these substances even when its getting you in trouble. If its getting you in trouble, it is your responsibility to get the help that you need so that you don't get yourself into trouble. If you can't use substances w/out getting in trouble with the law otherwise, then don't use them.
I am a foster care child (20 years old) and the drug war has ruined my life.
I started self harming (biting) while in foster care and eventually I started cutting to fat tissue and burning myself with cigs I found on the ground. I found marijuana and it helped me not self harm, but I was taken off Medicaid/Medicare (whichever one government gives to foster kids) because I tested positive. I couldn’t get my prescription and I eventually failed out of school because of it. I then started selling and lost 2 of my best friends (1 got shot by a rival and the other shot himself while on heroin and Xanax). I eventually tried killing myself after my dad died of cancer, and I’m only now getting my life in order.
I microdose lsd occasionally, I smoke marijuana daily, and I haven’t used any pill or other drug in 11 months. I had a DMT experience and I can say without a doubt that my life still has meaning and I can affect the global way the world functions. I want to be a advocate for the drug policy and get compassion for users.
Decriminalization let’s the black market thrive, no doubt, but if there was a way for real hardcore addicts to get a clean and pure version of their drug, it would result in ALOT less opiate deaths. With Narcan Handy, anyone’s life can be saved. If there was a national addict registry that took away a few rights while you are on it (no firearms in my opinion but it’s subjective) then it could really help.
Also, incentivize corporations to hire those on the addict registration by paying part of their income or giving them tax cuts.
There is a clear solution to this problem, but no government official wants to acknowledge it. I’ve been to both sides of the spectrum, I wasn’t a addict and then I became one. I know from experience that drug dealing is a lifestyle and you become a addict easily. You cannot help these people with a jail cell, you must get them jobs and make them productive members of the society.
I've been in drug" treatment and trust me your much better off in prison

Why didn’t you use Nixon’s aid own voice along with the caption? It would have been much more powerful and concrete. Still. Good video and glad this information is getting out. #DrugWarBuiltOnLies

IT was the Asian population that was associated with heroin/opium because they came over here and opened opium dens, which were legal over in Asia.
Cannabis is a weed.D. Peron said it should be treated like a weed-free and unrestricted. How stupid is classifying it Schedule 1?
You cannot win the war on drugs and you cannot win a war without drugs
