    "If Montero had gone down..." This is why players dive. Until refs give penalties for fouls without players needing to flop, players will flop.

    • @pitdoctor
      @pitdoctor 3 роки тому +13

      Yep, that way of calling fouls and penalties is what leads to players exaggerating any little bit of contact and flapping their way to the ground.

      And they're just wrong to say the shot wasn't affected. The ball was too far in front of him not allowing him options on where to put it or as much power. Bad analysis. These need to be called. Referees are so used to attackers diving, even without contact, that they don't know what to do when the attacker actually plays through like they should. Tough cycle to get out of.

      I am a Sounders fan and I know what you are saying. However, it's a tough call for the ref. If he blows his whistle right away and then Montero scores, he negates the goal and then what if he misses the penalty? The ref had a to make a judgement call on whether to play on and if he had a decent chance of scoring. He can't just let him take the shot and then call the penalty if he missed.

      What they're saying is if he had gone down the foul would have been completed and the attempt would have been stopped. Since he didn't go down and he got his shot off there is no need to. His attempt was not stopped and honestly wasn't really made all that much more difficult either, it wasn't an egregious shirt pull. Its basically the referee playing advantage because the striker got the shot that he wanted.

  • @SJELopes8

    This is what pisses me off. Just because a player doesn't go down while being tackled or pulled by the jersey, doesn't mean it's not a foul. Those should be called at all times... when you dont call them, it promotes diving in the box. Its bullshit. I'm a DC fan but Seattle should've gotten a penalty. And you see the New England player diving... so stupid

      Dammed if you do and Dammed if you don't as a referee. Referees are taught to wait and see especially in the penalty area of the field of play. Alternate outcome: Montero is held and the referee has a quick whistle to stop play and award a penalty kick and send off the defender. As the whistle is being blown Montero shoots and scores. No goal and play is restarted with a penalty kick with the defending team a man down. That referee would probably never see another MLS center again. The assessor up in the booth would crucify him in his written assessment of the referee's decision-making that is sent to the MLS Director of Referees.

    • @offthehookproductions4481
      @offthehookproductions4481 3 роки тому +1

      @@DJ-xs7ln He could easily have held off on the whistle until after the shot was blocked. Some refs will wait two or three seconds (occasionally more) after an infringement to see if an advantage plays out. Either way, VAR should have gotten involved on this one.

      @@offthehookproductions4481 There is another phrase in refereeing, Giving him two bites of the same apple. Montero shoots and the goalkeeper makes the save which is what happened. Now the referee blows his whistle and awards the penalty kick. That would be the second bite of the apple. Did that once and it was not pretty.
      In addition, referees are taught to give an advantage in the penalty area without verbal or physical gestures as it is done outside the penalty area. The referee was giving Montero the advantage he had gained by playing through the hold.

    Charlie Davies at 3:40 "If you make contact with the neck/head area you are going to be sent off". Sounds great until you recognize the Tomas Romero punched Khiry Shelton in the neck, stomped on him, and then kneed him in the forehead and there was only a yellow card and you aren't even going to cover this? Instant Replay is just as consistently inconsistent as PRO Referees are

  • @seattlefreakinsports
    @seattlefreakinsports 3 роки тому +13

    7:24 when Charlie Davies says that "had montero gone down it would have been a penalty and a red" is exactly what is wrong with PRO refs. They are blatantly encouraging and rewards dives and flops. If it is a foul, its a foul, whether or not the player goes down. Pulling the jersey is a foul anywhere on the field, and that should have been no different.

    • @seattlefreakinsports
      @seattlefreakinsports 3 роки тому

      @@andrewestham8442 the issue with that is Montero was pulled back, allowing the ball to roll further away causing Montero to take longer with the shot. That allowed the 2nd defender and the goalkeeper get better positioning. The rule book states that pulling a jersey is a foul, whether or not the player goes down. This is just encouraging players to flop unnecessarily, which is the worst park of the game. I agree that Montero should still score from there, but it would have been an even better chance had he not been pulled back. Still, the Sounders choked the game regardless of no calls on multiple occasions, two other times that were not discussed here.

  • @citizenclown
    @citizenclown 3 роки тому +44

    I disagree with the "they got this right" on the Montero pull. You can clearly see he takes the shot leaning backward from the pull. To say "well he got his shot off" has nothing to due with the fact that the rules were broken and a foul was committed. He could very well have scored there that close and certainly changed the outcome of that game.

      He ends up toe-poking the ball because he didn't continue his forward momentum. With slightly better balance he might have been able to lift it, or at least place it more accurately. And even if it didn't affect his shot, its a clear foul! There was no room in this one for the "wasn't clear and obvious" excuse.

      They are completely correct, it’s a contact sport. If he had gone down then it could’ve been called however he felt good enough to get his shot off. Puts him slightly off balance and 2. Slows him down allowing the keeper to close the angle. That should be a penalty and a red regardless of if he goes down. Blanco's offense was much more egregious than that and deserved the red. Chara also deserved a red for the scissors tackle from behind for endangering the safety of his opponent. A couple of years ago they made that a point of emphasis with MLS' referees in order to "rid the game of such violent behavior" looks like they were *totally* successful.

    Martinez dove, just like he did to reach his MLS record goal total. It’s what he does.
    Meanwhile, you review the touch from Blanco, but don’t review a JERSEY GRAB IN THE BOX agains SJ? Jeez, you guys are just PRO propaganda.
    And, even as a Timber’s fan, what the heck are you talking about with the no-call on the Montero grab? With the amount of delay that the jersey grab caused, Freddie could have danced around all 4 defenders and the keeper in that box. How biased do you have to be to agree with that no-call?

    Josef did a Jamie vardy trademark leg dragging dive, initiated the contact while slowing down. classic

      No way, Josef wants that goal. He rarely takes a dive. He slowed down because he was getting his feet set for his shot.

      He goes down too easy
      He thinks he has style but looks like a clown
      He acts like he's god's gift to the game but he plays for a 2nd class league. If he really was a competitor he'd be doing everything he could to not look like a clown and get himself in a top league.

I can't respect a player who struts around in a lower division league and acts like he's the best in the world. If he's that good, then go prove himself. Maybe I should go play against the U12 kids and pretend I'm the best around.
