I commented this on some recent videos but you really need to know this. The most important and main attribute for your Associate/Assistant coaches are the PP & PK stat. The associate coach is essentially your forwards coach (PP coach) so you want him to have A+ PP. everything else is irrelevant. (Sounds dumb but trust me) You want an A+ PK for your Assistant coach as he’s your defensive coach. (PK coach) They have no effect 5v5. The coaches you have now aren’t bad, especially the associate you have since he's being groomed to be head coach, but something to look at upgrading imo

yeah he has the best trade value of all the prospects and has had the least growth. He may still become an NHLer but he won't get past the mid 80s. if you can get a guaranteed stud like Werenski, you do it.
Imagine being swayman in this universe, goes from playing for Boston to Utah, thinks he’s got a decent team building infront of him after he’s stood on his head for years. Rumors they will be getting the first overall pick in the upcoming draft. Goes to the kitchen for a beer just to come back 3 minutes later and be informed by his wife that his entire team has been traded for that pick😂😂😂

Gonchar (whose rookie contract is expiring soon) and Lehtivouri are the main trade chips, but throw in DeAngelo in a any trade as a cap dump and in Moser is on big money consider trading his -16 too (if Moser is cheap, keep him!). Also throw in non-elite prospects like Nordh as trade chips. 3. Keep Kurri, Karpotsev, Tukonen, and the non-Lehtivuori D-men this deadline. 4. If there are any unsigned draftees on your team contract screen, trade them. They still have minor value

The biggest issue for Swayman and his stats is the awful defensive core. If you want success you need to add 2 players, one 86+ and one 83/84 Overall, so that your defence helps goaltending. No matter how good Swayman might be, but when your defence resembles Swiss Cheese, there is nothing he can do. Also, Associate Coach needs to have A+ Powerplay and Assistant Coach needs to have A+ Penalty kill!
I think what most of these comments are not understanding is that Johnny realizes that trade was ridiculous. He did it for the story line. He did it for entertainment. He did it for a challenge. That being said, chill out and enjoy this potential train wreck lol
Getting Werenski is the move. No draft picks to tank for and he will push the team a step forward. With him, chuchyrn and Kurtz off-season growth, you will have a serious defensive core next year with the option to resign werenski. Like you said, you have an overload of low elite/medium elite forwards that already have similar value to first round draft picks and not all of them will have spots on the team, two of them for werenski is worth it. You will continue to load up on low/med elites to replace them in each draft
Johnny, I've been a subsciber since NHL 12 - since I was a kid. Just wanna say I appreciate the uploads and feel that you've improved the every GM Mode you have done. Sure, you gave up too much for Vesce, but, it doesnt bother me in the slightest. You essentially eliminated any doubt that Minnesota would reject the trade (if it happened in real life) and made it well worth their while to pass on a generational talent and a player who might have become their best player in franchise history. You still wouldve had to part ways with numerous 1sts and great players so the fact you overpayed while making the GM harder is going to be more entertaining to watch in my opinion.
I still think the trade for Vesce was crazy for “realism” since he is a prospect coming into the league. Compare it to the NBA for example, I don’t think any team in the league would make a deal like that for Wembanyama
Hey John. I want to put a positive spin on the trading of all those 1st rounders. You can use all your prospects you think you might not use as a replacement for trades. I think you need to at least get 1 of those 2 defencemen if not both. Trade your prospects for them and maybe a 2nd or 3rd. Thanks for the constant videos!
I think we might be able to make the playoffs but you definitely have to make that trade for a defenseman. No way a gm makes the biggest trade in history, and leaves his pick to just figure it out. Help him out on the defensive end. Trade some of the guys that didn't grow. And while you're at it, bring in Ranta in free agency in the offseason

AHL stats don't affect growth at all. I had a 78 ovr top 6 potential player score 76 goals in the AHL and he just stayed 78 ovr the next season. So you could put the AHL lines on auto so you don't have to deal with the injuries down there.
idk how I'd prove it over yt comments but i guess go in the game and check your AHL progress reports and you'll see that none of them have any statistical growth

For like the hundredth time, skating doesn’t matter in a sim. This is why so many low elite prospects who turn out, never become good skaters but can put up 30-50 goals a year with good shooting and offensive awareness.
If the plan for 1D is one of the guys in the system, then I dont think paying werenski is necessarily worth it. Sanheim might be a perfect guy to help the lineup right now and still fit in the bottom 4 when that 1D develops
Trade the low or medium elite prospects that you know won’t fit on you lines in the future. Werenski would be great along with like an 83 overall defenceman for the bottom pair if it fits
I’ve noticed nearly every coach that has pinch/cycle preference for the first pair, will have balanced/balanced for pair 2 and hold line/shoot for pair three. Keep looking for a pair for Kurtz, but look for the other chemistry possibilities too!!
Put vesce in the center position on the powerplay, get that big body infront of the net and get those greasy goals. Have Cooley on the point as a playmaker and you’ll also have his defensive stats on the back end in case of a short handed chance.
Hey Jon, just want to share my two cents. I know you want to get your young guys playing but I’ve always found success with maybe not signing a 50 overall to the AHL. It’s good for them to “go back” to whatever team they were drafted from. Maybe that’s going back to the O or Russia or SHL. You could see more growth from them then. I also thought a new rule that could be implemented in future drafts is that you can’t sign Russian players from the draft right away as there KHL contracts aren’t up lol. Might be a fun challenge. Done it a couple times myself in GM modes. As always let’s go yeti
Great vid as always john, been a fan for a decade now (crazy right?) On the coaching issue, I strongly believe you should go the route of pinch-cycle, you already have a great forward core of the future that should be great no matter what, however the defensive core is extremely shallow. building that back end up to support the already flourishing forward core is easily the best move in my opinion
Pick up Sanheim and Ceci for two low elite prospects, Clifton, and DeAngelo, and since you love “not fleecing the computer”, throw in a 3rd and 4th round pick. Swayman is getting peppered, you can tell by the save % relative to the GAA, you need to minimize shots with better defencemen. You can play Kurtz and Chychrun, Moser and Sanheim, then Ceci and Lauzon. Yeah Ceci is a rental but he’s not worth more than a 3rd and 4th round pick and you’re upgrading a bottom pair defenceman by two overall. That could be the difference between making the playoffs or Chase Davidson having another shot at the first overall pick, which will just bite you in the ass in the future.
After the huge trade from the last video I'm hoping that means this series is destined to be a long one. Won't be able to see the full potential of this team for a while.
The best attacking x-factors in-game imo is: One-Tee, Make it snappy and Close Quarters. Off the rush would be a great one if players actually took slap shots when skating. Defensively I think Stick em up is the best since players often just skate into the other players and it also prevents more penalties.
Regardless of the price Johnny paid for Vesce he seems to be exactly what Johnny was looking for- a shooter. He's in pace for around 45 goals and 350 shots, so again, not looking at the price he paid the return was what he expected. Honestly, not bad Johnny!
You gotta find someone who fits alongside Kurtz on the 2nd Pairing so you can move him down and move Moser or a Werenski/whichever D-Man can fit Top 4 and on the penalty kill And then put whichever D-Man you don’t move alongside Kurtz to grow him by chemistry
there is thing in the goaltending, if you have a bad team the goalie stats is looking better than if you have a good team and a good goalie then the stats are allover the place. i have come to inglicusion that 84 85 goalie is the best way to go, then you don´t have to pay that much for a goalie, what you need to do if you have 87 or higer rated goalie. and Johnny please show some respect to the positons of the player. my expirience is that you have to build the team wright. left handed D to left side and right handed d to the right side and you need to do that with forwards aswell. Anyway you are a true entertainer, lovve your content. Keep doing what you do, you are the best. Ps. pardon my france.

The forward coach, i think, will be better because all those elite guys are bottom 6 guys, but those are the guys you had problems finding in free agency. Imagine not having to pick up any bottom six guys because all your low elite guys make up those lines? Also, you have way too many defensemen that work with reid to move off that. Kurtz is still a big puzzle piece to the plan.
Nabokov isn't growing because you're playing him on the 4th line and the 3rd line. Scratch him, and play the enforcers for some time. Only play nabokov for injured players, he could become something special if you give him a chance to do so, plus you don't know how he will fit in with the new head coach if you end up focusing on defence for the team structure of cycle pinch.
I was definitely in the live stream saying you goofed and gave up too much but I will trust the process. You’ve never made a non entertaining GM series. Go Utah
#1 priority is to avoid giving a division rival a potential lottery pick. I don’t think one d man trade is enough, at the very least you need to make two upgrades to avoid a lottery pick disaster.
I think part of this issue could be losing DeAngelo and having in his place Kesselring. Then losing Kurtz and having Szuber could be affecting your goaltending. So its not all his fault Swayman
Growing prospects with a coach/scheme fit that doesn't benefit them stunts their growth to a point, as playing on a line with 0 chem. is much worse than a line with +3 chem. Once you realize a prospect does not fit your system, target players around the same age in other AHL systems that will work, scout them to uncover them fully if needed, and flip your mismatched guy combined with either a late draft pick/very depth 'misfire' prospect you will never use/AHLer they want for some reason
Once again just throwing out the reminder that your line chemistry +/- is NOT applied to real time simulations, it’s best to put your highest overall or best producing players higher up.
The problem with the "story" angle is that realistically you'd be crucified within 3 seasons if you don't make the playoffs. That's what happened to the GM in Philly after the Lindros trade, and he gave up significantly less than you did here.

For like the hundredth time, skating doesn’t matter in a sim. This is why so many low elite prospects who turn out, never become good skaters but can put up 30-50 goals a year with good shooting and offensive awareness.

If the plan for 1D is one of the guys in the system, then I dont think paying werenski is necessarily worth it. Sanheim might be a perfect guy to help the lineup right now and still fit in the bottom 4 when that 1D develops

Trade the low or medium elite prospects that you know won’t fit on you lines in the future. Werenski would be great along with like an 83 overall defenceman for the bottom pair if it fits
I’ve noticed nearly every coach that has pinch/cycle preference for the first pair, will have balanced/balanced for pair 2 and hold line/shoot for pair three. Keep looking for a pair for Kurtz, but look for the other chemistry possibilities too!!
There’s never a coach with a mix of Cycle/Shoot mix
Put vesce in the center position on the powerplay, get that big body infront of the net and get those greasy goals. Have Cooley on the point as a playmaker and you’ll also have his defensive stats on the back end in case of a short handed chance.
Hey Jon, just want to share my two cents.
I know you want to get your young guys playing but I’ve always found success with maybe not signing a 50 overall to the AHL. It’s good for them to “go back” to whatever team they were drafted from. Maybe that’s going back to the O or Russia or SHL. You could see more growth from them then. I also thought a new rule that could be implemented in future drafts is that you can’t sign Russian players from the draft right away as there KHL contracts aren’t up lol. Might be a fun challenge. Done it a couple times myself in GM modes.

On the coaching issue, I strongly believe you should go the route of pinch-cycle, you already have a great forward core of the future that should be great no matter what, however the defensive core is extremely shallow. building that back end up to support the already flourishing forward core is easily the best move in my opinion

Pick up Sanheim and Ceci for two low elite prospects, Clifton, and DeAngelo, and since you love “not fleecing the computer”, throw in a 3rd and 4th round pick. Swayman is getting peppered, you can tell by the save % relative to the GAA, you need to minimize shots with better defencemen. You can play Kurtz and Chychrun, Moser and Sanheim, then Ceci and Lauzon. Yeah Ceci is a rental but he’s not worth more than a 3rd and 4th round pick and you’re upgrading a bottom pair defenceman by two overall. That could be the difference between making the playoffs or Chase Davidson having another shot at the first overall pick, which will just bite you in the ass in the future.
The PP got better without Kurtz and he shoves him back in there anyway 😂
After the huge trade from the last video I'm hoping that means this series is destined to be a long one. Won't be able to see the full potential of this team for a while.
The best attacking x-factors in-game imo is: One-Tee, Make it snappy and Close Quarters.
Off the rush would be a great one if players actually took slap shots when skating.
Defensively I think Stick em up is the best since players often just skate into the other players and it also prevents more penalties.
Regardless of the price Johnny paid for Vesce he seems to be exactly what Johnny was looking for- a shooter. He's in pace for around 45 goals and 350 shots, so again, not looking at the price he paid the return was what he expected. Honestly, not bad Johnny!

You gotta find someone who fits alongside Kurtz on the 2nd Pairing so you can move him down and move Moser or a Werenski/whichever D-Man can fit Top 4 and on the penalty kill
And then put whichever D-Man you don’t move alongside Kurtz to grow him by chemistry
I also will say Johnny did a good job finding all those low elite and medium elite guys in the last draft.....

there is thing in the goaltending, if you have a bad team the goalie stats is looking better than if you have a good team and a good goalie then the stats are allover the place. i have come to inglicusion that 84 85 goalie is the best way to go, then you don´t have to pay that much for a goalie, what you need to do if you have 87 or higer rated goalie. and Johnny please show some respect to the positons of the player. my expirience is that you have to build the team wright. left handed D to left side and right handed d to the right side and you need to do that with forwards aswell. Anyway you are a true entertainer, lovve your content. Keep doing what you do, you are the best. Ps. pardon my france.

The forward coach, i think, will be better because all those elite guys are bottom 6 guys, but those are the guys you had problems finding in free agency. Imagine not having to pick up any bottom six guys because all your low elite guys make up those lines? Also, you have way too many defensemen that work with reid to move off that. Kurtz is still a big puzzle piece to the plan.

Nabokov isn't growing because you're playing him on the 4th line and the 3rd line. Scratch him, and play the enforcers for some time. Only play nabokov for injured players, he could become something special if you give him a chance to do so, plus you don't know how he will fit in with the new head coach if you end up focusing on defence for the team structure of cycle pinch.

#1 priority is to avoid giving a division rival a potential lottery pick. I don’t think one d man trade is enough, at the very least you need to make two upgrades to avoid a lottery pick disaster.
I think part of this issue could be losing DeAngelo and having in his place Kesselring. Then losing Kurtz and having Szuber could be affecting your goaltending. So its not all his fault Swayman
Growing prospects with a coach/scheme fit that doesn't benefit them stunts their growth to a point, as playing on a line with 0 chem. is much worse than a line with +3 chem. Once you realize a prospect does not fit your system, target players around the same age in other AHL systems that will work, scout them to uncover them fully if needed, and flip your mismatched guy combined with either a late draft pick/very depth 'misfire' prospect you will never use/AHLer they want for some reason

The problem with the "story" angle is that realistically you'd be crucified within 3 seasons if you don't make the playoffs. That's what happened to the GM in Philly after the Lindros trade, and he gave up significantly less than you did here.
