  • On March 19, Pope Francis appointed Detroit's Bishop Gerard W. Battersby as the 11th bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse, Wis.
As the former Detroit auxiliary bishop - a lifelong Detroit native - prepares for his installation May 20 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman in La Crosse, he sat down with Detroit Catholic one final time to reflect upon his love for Detroit, his formation as a bishop, and how he looks forward with confidence in the Holy Spirit to serving his new flock.

This is so beautiful and so sad all at once. Bishop Battersby, I will miss you! Detroit was so lucky to have you. I attended St. Christopher when you were there, and I was struck then and still remember vividly how thought-provoking and excellent your sermons were. I was fortunate to be able to tell you that a few years ago when you confirmed my nephew at St. Linus. Thank you so much for all of the love, service, dedication, guidance, and kindness that you have given to the people of Detroit. La Crosse is so lucky. May God bless you always and please always know how much you meant to people.

Bishop Battersby, I was saddened to see this in my email. You have always been kind, approachable and so pleasant to know. I was forever grateful that you responded to a letter I wrote to you with clarity and deep concern. I still have it and pray for you by name. Your down to earth approach and your sincerity to help others was so appreciated. You helped with Divine Mercy many times at St. Thecla and your leadership led you to Bishop. Your humbleness stands out. You will be greatly missed. I'm just sorry I didn't see you through the passing years. Please know our family will continue to pray for you by name. God Bless, Kathy L'Esperance

Bishop Battersby, I first met you online during the pandemic while we were praying the Rosary together. I loved praying with you. Since then, whenever I see you on a prayer card or somewhere online, I've always admired you. As soon as I saw my email stating you were leaving, I immediately clicked the link to hear your story. We will miss you here, but we all know God has a special purpose for you. God bless you, Bishop Battersby.
