It's something I've been ranting about for a long time, the attitude of "we have this wonderful source material that people love so we want to make a new version and change it" without realising that if they change it then it's no longer the wonderful thing that people love, it's a bastardised version made by egotists who think they know better than world famous massively popular authors.

This is happening again with HotD even if it's to an arguably less egregious degree. Not many people seem to realize it yet.

Then the author will die, times will change, the very structure of language shall shift and the work is gone, the art dead. Art needs to change, to grow, to mutate. Sure a lot of it's shit so what does it take away from the original art. TROP regardless of your opinion has got a lot of people talking about the Peter Jackson films and the Original Novels. I want to keep seeing art moving, regardless of how many stumbles it makes but that's just me.

I thought Shogun was fantastic as well , really enjoyed it and has been one of my favorite series of the year thus far. And i vehemently agree with GRRM's shade towards show-runners , writers , producers and networks that needlessly deviate from the source material due to ego or ineptitude or a combination of both among more. Be it D&D , or those behind the Witcher , TRoP among quite a few more ; this attitude thinking one can or need to try & improve upon such great works and concepts in them is vexing to put it mildly. Even more so this at times hostility or derision towards the source material that i have noticed in certain instances. I just genuinely can not understand that approach or taking on a project with such thoughts and feelings. These networks , really need to show more willingness to change out show-runners as well - D&D should have been gone after that S5 disaster , Witcher i would have changed them out by now and would have sided with Cavill in a bid to keep him , axe should have been swung after TRoP S1 imo etc.
These people should consider it a privilege to adapt such great works and a boon to discuss / go back and forth with the living author (if possible). Of course be it logistically or otherwise there are times compromises have to be made with any adaptation , but sticking as close to the source material should be the primary aim & approach and often yields the best end product. I find the avoidable needlessly changing of the source material / lore in these adaptations to basically be disrespectful to the author and their work(s).

Martin is also throwing shade at the HOT D writers for drastically changing his story by removing Nettles, a major character that is very important to Daemon‘s redemption arc. There are no reasons to remove her. The writers think they can write a better story than Martin himself.

    • @isaacupton615

I've just rewatch HotD yesterday, while re-reading Shogun, and something hit me while watching the Finale of HotD. It's almost the same story. When Rhaenyra refused to attack Otto and declare war to Aegon and his supporters, it's the same thing that happened in Shogun when Toranaga refused to declare war because he promised the Taiko he won't be the one who will start a new war, and his goal is to maintain peace. Just like when Rhaenyra said she promised her father she won't break the peace. When Daemon intercepted Otto on the path leading to Dragonstone Castle, Rhaenyra arrived on her dragon and she was ready to attack and refused to bend the knee, but then Otto gave her the page of the book that she gave back then to Alicent, she then said she will give an answer tomorrow. Just like in Shogun when Toranaga's half brother gave him a scroll where he is invited to Osaka to surrender. Toranaga said he will give an answer the next day.

This notification came up as I'm listening my way through the Shogun soundtrack. I wonder if subsequent seasons will take a similar approach to what Vikings did in the sense that the Lothbroks were essentially vehicles to outline the broader history of the Viking period. Hiroyuki Sanada et al smashed it - the layers in the acting were incredible.

I know you have some interest in history, tho I don't know how much. But unless you've already read a shitton on it, I highly recommend you research the period of Japan that Shogun represents. I don't know if that's even a big reason for Martin's seal of approval, but Shogun takes place in the time period that is my area of focus and I was absolutely fanboying the entire time for little details here and there. There is other good historical TV out there but so much schlock that it was genuinely heartwarming to see the accuracy.

I added @FX to my Verizon account just to watch this new series this winter and the first 8 episodes are truly epic. Those last two episodes though . . . failed to meet my expectations . . . they didn't close the show in my opinion like the first season of "Warrior" did with its final two episodes by comparison.
Will the second season of "Shogun" be as captivating without two of it's biggest supporting characters?!? Will it effectively build upon the season one foundation like "Warrior" did in its superb sophomore season!?! Time will only tell . . . but I feel that "Shogun" could have benefited from the bigger budget it might have received from Apple+ if that streaming service had the IP rather than FX because it has that much potential to be epic . . . but when has FX ever done major military battle scenes though?!?

His criticism gives me hope that he didn’t allow the HOTD show runners to completely remove Nettles. Even though I think they did. To me, it would be crazy to combine two characters and the character who you end up giving us is Baela or Rhaena with Nettles merged into one of them. If you were going to merge characters, you should have just one twin and merge events about the other into Nettles, not the other way around. I really hope that’s the case because IMO, there would be little to no justification to have two daughters and no Nettles when you could’ve just had one daughter and then Nettles if you wanted to cut the number of characters down or merge characters. I know this is a little off topic but it’s just something that bugged me and I really hope those rumors aren’t true and they add her in later as a major shock to fans or a twist.
