I was wondering if it was from Donnie Darko hence the title but also the lyrics definitely points to Donnie Darko but the music video has not even a small hint of Darko so I’m not sure
I think it is inspired, I think the copies of themselves, the key to another dimension, also the fact that they're stuck in a loop controlled by anxiety (Donnie is controlled by Frank in the movie). But I would say it's a loose connection, but the title Cellar Door is way too unique and that was definitely on purpose. Same with other details in the lyrics, like you said.
