- The Icelandic entry to the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest in Rome, Italy.
Stefán & Eyfi - Nína
Sort of an Icelandic "Oh My Darling Clementine", this is one of our most loved entries. We were very disappointed that this was taken so lukewarmly by the juries (we only got points from 4 countries in total, but most of these were generous votes), especially after the success of "Eitt lag enn". Still, similar to Greece's "Anixi", it's a song that may not have done well in the contest but is nonetheless a truly loved classic in the homeland to this day, to composer Eyjólfur Kristjánsson's surprise (the guy in the turquoise jacket). Everybody in Iceland knows this song, and it can still occasionally be heard on our radio in its original recording. All of which goes to prove that you just can't keep a good song down, and I admit that I like it very much.
Trivia:
Stefán Hilmarsson (the guy in the purple jacket) is still very much active on our music scene, especially fronting his band Sálin hans Jóns míns, which is still very popular in Iceland.
Eyþór Arnalds, the celloist, is best known for his part of the musical group Todmobile, which only a couple years ago released their latest album, which I think is superb. He spends much of his time in politics at this point.
This is and will always be the most popular Icelandic Eurovision song in Iceland, it even won the most popular Icelandic Eurovision song poll a few years ago :) I think every Icelander knows the lyrics and can sing this song! Stefán and Eyfi are still singing it and they're even having a concert on April 30th to celebrate Nína's 20th anniversary :D
More then yaya singsong?
Btw this statement still stands in 2023. I'm 18 and my peers all know this song like the back of their hand.
Beautiful song.cannot believe almost 30 years have passed .greetings from Portugal.
One of the best song's ever in Eurovision Song Contest...
This is one of three entries from the 1991 contest that I actually bought as a single. And I must have listened to it hundreds of times. I still love it.
This is a classic Icelandic song! Even though I was not born when this song was on Eurovision, I still listen to it more then 20 years later!! I'm even learning how to play it on guitar :P
This song will never ever get old!! It's one of the best Icelandic songs EVER MADE!!
It's hard to think it's thirty years since I saw this for the first time. I awarded 12 points to Iceland for giving us such a brilliant song. It is still a firm favourite of mine, even today (May 8th, 2021). Well done to everyone involved in the production of this song.
I still love this song. It's classic and memorable. The lovely years of the Eurovision song contest. 🤗🇬🇷
I loved every second of it, and the language helps a lot
in the task of conveying the sentiment of the whole song.
Man, Icelandic is so powrful when it needs to sound romantic,
emotional, poetic and powerfully wordy.
Lots of love, support and apppreciation from Mexico
Iceland's best ever Eurovision entry live orchestra is just beautiful .
One of the best songs of the ESC in 1991, listening to it on Spotify. Greetings from Portugal.
I had forgotten this song, how could I. I love it 🙏
I am from Belguim and this on my top 20 off best esc songs... I don't get wy it whas so under related.!
I love this. A good vocal performance and I just love this musical arrangement. Especially given I don't understand a word of Icelandic! This is in my top 10.
My number 4 song of 1991, definitely a top 10 entry, underrated. Greetings from the Netherlands.
I'm from Iceland :-)
Nice to read your comment, great songs in eurovision Iceland.
Credit where it's due - the RAI Orchestra nailed this one.
The only song that year that they didn’t fucked up.
Such a beautiful song with very beautiful lyrics!
As for this song, it sure was criminally underrated back then, but it's good to hear, that it has received a well-deserved status as a classic back at Iceland.
I'm from Sweden and I must really say that Icelandic is a fascianting language in many ways.
Partly since it has been keeping some ancient characters (such as þ & ð) and has barely been borrowing any words from other Indo-European languages but rather inventing their own words instead.
Icelandic can be tricly to understand in speech but it definitely gets easier with some practice. When reading it, you do usually understand a fair amount.
Very nice and lovely song.tank you from Israel ❤❤❤❤❤
Allir i skólanum á böllum kemur þetta lag og allir dansa vöku dans 💗
Ég elska thetta lagid! Kvedjur frá Danmörku :-)

@@paulmcmuffin We also have "Đ"in Croatia.
One of my favourite Eurovision songs!! Iceland has given us some super Eurovision songs over the years!!
It received 10 points from Sweden and 7 from Italy, 2 countries from the 4 that gave points
I love it when this song comes up on my iPod - always puts a smile on my face. I always try to sing along but end up just humming! One of my Eurovision faves!
This song and performance is totally in the top 3 Icelandic entries ever.
una de mis canciones favoritas, muy bien interpretado por Stefan y Eify, que cantan muy bien, son muy guapos y muy simpaticos.
I would never get tired of listening to this song. I had completely forgotten how beautiful it was. A shame it didn´t get many points
Just came back from Iceland (was there for the first time), and I bought a great CD there, with duets of Björgvin Halldórsson (Iceland 1995), and one duet is Björgvin with Stefán Hilmarsson. :)
Teksti:
Your country's song that year was the best. So underated.
❤️❤️💞💞💖💖💙💙💗💗💜💜
A great entry
Bonita balada y fabuloso duo de setfan y Eyfi, que hicieron una maravillosa interpretacion.
Now I saw your information :D!
Very very informed!
Bravo!
As a Swede, I can verify that we don't understand much Icelandic unless we study the language. But we can understand Norwegian and (written) Danish pretty well. But as a linguistics nerd, I love studying Icelandic and Faroese, because these languages have hardly changed at all since the Middle ages, while Swedes, Norwegians and Danes all have changed their languages to a considerable degree over the centuries, most notably dropping the "th" sounds and simplifying the grammar.
@heidos7
The same thing in Greece! That year our country sent Sofia Vossou with ''Anoiksi-Spring'' and we took the 13 place!
But this song become our favourite and most listened until now!
1991 was an iconic year and - aside from Toto - this is one of the reasons why. I didn’t think much of this song upon first listen but now I can hear what a great song it is - it really is a grower!
toto iconic in a bad way
Great song!!
I wonder why it didn't make it into top 5.
i love this song :)
Amazing live performance of one of the best Eurovision songs there is.
Forget Sweden and France. This is the one.
Lol! I remember this from when I was a kid. When the guy in the purple jacket came in I was like *____* p..p..prettyyyy!
Aaaah, those childhood memories. ^^
it was a very nice icelandic entry!i also wonder why it got that low placing!i am sure it deserved a top 10 placing and the Icelandic language makes it so lovely!
P.S. The quality is perfect!
Liked this but I still think France was robbed of a win.
There is a English version on tape/cassette with this song :)
@heidos7
Great !
Keep eurovisioning :)) !
@oEpimenonNika Yeah I've heard it, that was a good song :) I actually went to their extra concert on May 25th and it was so fun, they sang many ESC songs, most Icelandic though :)
it is like eitt lag enn
3:00 it is like eitt lag enn
i luv this song, geggjað lag! vissi ekki einusinni fyrir nokkrum árum að það hafði farið í eurovision
Ah, the glory of the 1991 set! Also, shame on the director for not giving us more close-ups of Richard Scobie.
3:00 IT is eitt lag enn
@oEpimenonNika Haha yeah :)
@setheurovision94 For a greek ear it still sounds simillar :DD. just kidding :p. Thank you very much for your reply. Actually i like more swedish and norwegish than danish. danish seems to me a mix of swedish and german :p.
A complete lie. While Iceland was indeed colonized by Norwegians, Iceland was never a penal colony for Norway, like Australia was for the UK. The vikings were rebels who fled the authorities of Norway and settled on this uninhabited island they found. Nothing was keeping them there. If there were, how do you explain the famous viking raids, where they brought people from the British isles back to Iceland with them?
And the Icelanders were also the first Europeans to colonize what today is Greenland and Canada.
setheurovision94 where’s the English translation of this song? It says in UA-cam that this video has an English translation
@@jezzaqc It was an annotation translation, until UA-cam went and ruined that by getting rid of them.
setheurovision94 ah! Fair enough!
@@jezzaqc I've taken that out of the video title now, to avoid further confusion, thanks for bringing it to my attention!
i really liked this song too :). should have been top 5. question: can icelandic people understand norwegian, swedish and danish too? ( i always thought these langueages are like dialects of each other, sound very simillar).
2:42 FABIO!!!!
2:00 Is that Sigga?
According to Diggiloo Thrush, that's not Sigga but another woman named Erna Þórarinsdóttir. But it sure looks like her.
they are Stefan og eyfi
lekkert hárband.
Djöfull er Stefán fallegur.
I bet i thought the blonde guy was hawt
damn, eyfi got me feeling like a fish! /pos 🐟🐠🐡
eyfi > stefan
I'm Icelandic and I can understand Danish because I have learned it in school but the language I find easiest to understand is Swedish mainly because some of the pronounciation and word sounding is the same not as the Danish as we say speak with a potato in their throat
jepp þetta er flott lag

It is a brilliant song, possibly Iceland's best ever. I love the arrangement and piano. But the singers....were they really the best they could get? They really oversing it in places and the outfits didn't help.
How were they oversinging? Stefán is one of Iceland's best singers, and still fronts his successful band today.
It's just a bit belted out for a tender love song. I'm sure he's great with the right song, but I think this would be benefited from being a little more understated. There's lot of interesting trivia on the And The Conductor Is...website about the rehearsals and the woes that the conductor had with the orchestra all week (as did just about everyone apart from Israel).
"Nína" is a belter, that's how it's written. It's also not just a tender love song, but about a love affair tragically cut short by death.
Really? Because if so, it indeed gives off that feeling.
i think norway, Denmark and Sweden have a simillar langueges. but icelandic is really diffrent from them
@johny7even These languages are closely related, but Icelandic is still very different from Danish/Norwegian/Swedish, so we don't generally understand them. We do learn Danish in schools, but the manner of organising the teaching is sub-par, as we mainly learn reading and writing Danish and not enough speaking it - a GRAVE thing not to focus enough on. Now living in Denmark, I find that Danes, Norwegians and Swedes can mostly understand each other, but they don't understand Icelandic at all.
Very quirky
Our by far most overrated entry and it does not deserve it. I'm so tired of drunken people singing this along with guitar accompaniment in parties until they can't sing anymore at all. Hate it.
Stefan Sigfinnsson still to this day can't understand why this song didn't do well in 1991. Greetings from Cyprus!
I see that you have a bad experience with other people singing this while drunk, and that's a shame. But this performance in Eurovision is great.
Stefan Sigfinnsson
Why do you say that?
I loved it completely, especially due to the fact that Icelandic, kind of like Russian, has no articles.
stupid headbands hahaha
True story; right before entering the stage, Eyfi put the headband on, and Stefán stopped him to ask, "Really? You're wearing that?" Eyfi replied, "Yeah."
setheurovision94 yes, i heard this as well
