Randy It's roughly synonymous with "That's so hardcore." It's not literally the same thing as "cool." Just a couple examples: A really neat optical illusion: cool, but not "so metal." Someone chopping off their own hand to get out of a bear trap: definitely "so metal." Of course the phrase is also often used ironically to refer to things that are not considered hardcore at all, e.g. "I just stubbed my toe, went right on walking like it was nothing" "dude that's so metal".
I find it's more like Demon's Souls but sekiro-ified. Either way, this and Remnant are the first 3D souls-likes to actually be really good but still original.

Yeah I love Mortal Shell. It's an excellent homage to Dark souls/Demon souls in the best way and still has its own unique mechanics to make it stand out.. one of the best games this year imo..
At first I thought, "Meh, another Dark Souls clone" but after I tried it, man it was good, I think people should play this before they play dark souls, you know to adjust with the difficulty a bit
As a souls fan, I loved this game! Absolutely worth the 30$ no question about it! Loved the atmosphere and mood the environments gave off. I would highly recommend to souls fan or newcomers wanting to get into the genre to play Mortal Shell
As most recent comments go I’ve been playing the enhanced version on Game Pass with Series X. Absolutely incredible game, I normally don’t go for these dark souls style games because of the difficulty but this one is an absolute gem. 10/10
@@armored-clown You don't need to spend anywhere near that much on a system to get a better experience than the consoles, but the series X port is pretty solid, so you would need a 2070 super/3060ti at least. @@JustS0meK1dd It is a great deal! I’m signed up through mid 2023 on Game Pass absolutely love it. And my comment slightly changed I ended up building a 3080 ti rig since I was able to finally get the parts at MSRP or below. Currently working my way through Elden Ring very slowly haha
9:09 this attack animation using the hilt and guard as a blunt strike is actually a thing. It's a tactic and technique that you can actually find in ancient sword fighting manuals dating back to medieval times. There are a few HEMA practitioners on UA-cam that demonstrate and explain the use and history behind it. Skallagrim being the first that comes to mind.
@Heinrich Barbarossa Half-swording is another thing entirely: it’s when you put one of your hands in the middle of the blade of a big sword like it was some sort of spear and then you stab with it. That’s why some zweihanders have no sharp edge on the lower half of the blade and they even have a secondary guard.
Thanks for the coverage on this. I didn't know about this somehow and I'm glad to know this exists. I'll probably hold out for the October physical release, but awesome. This is definitely on my radar now.
I agree. I actually more than likely give Bloodborne "Game of the Decade" personally. But they working on Elder Ring. Who know how long it would be to get a second Bloodborne title.
Finished the game last night. Solid game. Combat was great, the environments, fantastic sound, enemy variety, really well optimised and not a single bug encountered. Things that I didn't like. Few upgrades and weapons. And not that great character progress system. Other than that, I say it again solid game! Hope the team gets recognition for what they achieved here, and will go on strong with a few dlc's or a series in the future.
I am loving this game. But I have encountered a very annoying bug. After beating the boss in the zone where you get the big fire staff I made my way back to Falgrim tower through the fog with my gland only to have the game crash as I talk to Sester. Here’s where it gets good. I reload the game only to have a notification pop up saying corrupt save file. When I reload the game it resets the whole world. BUT...it loaded my character with all my upgrades and inventory. So all the one of items I got to pick up again. I also got to refight the weapon bosses with the weapon I’m supposed to unlock from them. Lol. What sucks though? I beat the boss in the fire zone a second time and took it to bird beast. Which was enough to trigger the final boss fight. Yet I still had one more gland to get. So, I go get that gland and try to use my ornate mask to fast travel back to Falgrim tower. But you can’t fast travel while holding a gland. And sincethe bird beast already left to ascend I have no way to get rid of the gland. 🤬🤬🤬
I want my 30$ back, was extremely bored at the beginning with everything looking the same and the holes leading me up to places I was already at...very horrible first impression.
Mortal Shell is probably the most satisfying Souls-like I've played yet. It takes exactly what it likes from Souls and makes its own streamlining improvements. Thank you gameranx for highlighting this game. I feel the developers really had a handle on this game, right down to giving the player agency wherever they could (by creating a central hub that can branch out to the other "biomes", taken in any order.) when they knew the customization would be a bit limited. This game still feels like a triple A experience all around.
Really liking these videos of you guys highlighting lesser known games coming out. Theres so much stuff being released that I keep missing these gems amongst the rumble of crap that gets shown.
For the size of the team working on it and the budget for $30 this was an amazing game. A little short and I would have liked a few more hours gameplay, a couple more weapons, maybe another shell or two. Definitely hope they expand on it, either with DLC, a sequel, or both. Really good effort from these devs
Thanks for your take on this game. I've been looking at this game in the Xbox store since it came out but wasn't sure that I wanted to try it. Now that I've seen gameplay and learned about some of their mechanics, I think I will buy it. Keep up the great work!
I loved this game. I’m still playing it. After having played the demo I was sold. I was ready to pay $60 for it - and even now I still would have. Then they released it for $30 which is an absolute steal for this game. I’ve put over 20 hours in it and don’t see me really stopping playing it anytime soon. Not until November anyway. 8/10. Bought this game on a whim and I’m so glad I did. It is amazing! It’s also easier to get the hang of than Darksouls. This studio deserves all the attention it can get. Hope they release some DLC soon.
I picked it up and I feel like it’s my next favorite souls-like outside of the surge series. Sure, there could be a few QoL adjustments but I’m really happy with it so far. Huge potential for this series.
I absolutely love this game. I am a souls veteran and I love the similarities and differences it’s familiar and new and I can see myself playing this quite a bit and I’m all for a sequel.
Beat this last week and had an absolute blast! Pissed me TF off for the first 3 hours but after 24 I had every shell, weapon and upgrade. All bosses beaten, this is now a favorite for sure!
I love the look of these games so much, and I always watch 100% playthroughs and speedruns, but sadly, as a 33 yr old man, I am too much of a wuss to play them. Edit: I love all the guys in the comments beating their chests about how old they are and how they've beaten the Souls games. I can tell you're very proud of yourselves... Edit 2: I've now beaten DS1 and 3. I thought 1 was OK at best and 3 was really fun in a lot of places. I'm still not huge on the mechanics of the methodical gameplay over a typical hack and slash, and I do wish the environments were brighter, but I think I'm going to give this game a try.
Hey I’m the same age as you and thought the same about these type of games. But I started playing them earlier this year with Sekiro, and now I’m in love with them. I also upload my boss fights to my channel, always nice to look back and appreciate what I’ve fought through. Give it a try my friend!
I just played it last week I was really impressed with the game I had ALOT of fun especially because of how tactical you have to be in attack and defense
One thing about the lute - try playing it next to Sester Genessa and look what she's doing. Apart from that lute aggroes the enemies from around you. So if you want to pull some enemies, just play the lute.
At least mention the Discord server. Great game, by the way. I completed it with the balanced shell the first time and I am running through it again. The ballistazooka is integrated correctly in the gameplay: it is effective, but you need ammo for it, which is not cheap. This makes the players appreciate every occasion they have to use it. Also, the cat has a name: Sero, the serotonin cat.
If you play the lute to the giant frog he spews at you giving your armour a different and really cool look, and a different one for each shell. It’s actually rad. That’s why the giant frog is there. I’m late to the party with this game but man, I really really really hope there is a full sized sequel. Fifteen people made this game!
This game is incredible. The difficulty of it draws me in because the bosses are difficult but beatable. At least the ones I've fought so far. Makes you wanna jump back in and play until you finally beat the bosses which is incredibly satisfying once you do. 10/10 for me. 🙌
It’s so cute how the loading screen is almost identical to dark souls and bloodborne ones. The devs also said they love dark souls and demon souls. Idk just find that so cute.
Yeah me too. I understand the RPG genre is a really wide umbrella but I clicked on this I was hoping there’d actually be... role playing. There’s nothing wrong with souls like games but Idk if they’re not really “role playing games” outside of the skill building aspect.
It’s a pretty forgiving souls like, unlike others, so maybe you would still enjoy it. For $30 it’s worth trying at least. There was a free demo you could get from their website, I don’t know if that is still there
You guys and Dreamcast Guy really think the world of this game and I can see why. This looks really good, especially since the devs took the time to get the experience they intended properly. Gonna check this out!
Mortal Shell is one of my favorite games right now in terms of souls likes even though it is short it makes up for that with its weapons and shells. I hope they make more content for this game it's awesome.
Two facts about that frog: 1. Its name is Gorf, which is Frog backwards. 2. Speaking with the frog enables or disables the background humming music. Its quite eerie actually, took me a while to realise.
Being a dark souls like needs to stop being said with a negative connotation. Honestly if your game is 99% percent dark souls and 1% unique, if it’s good than I’ll buy it everytime.
it baffles me as to how these guys made a game like this on such a small budget, this game is amazing, the weapons, the upgrade system, the story. This will definitely be the birth of something legendary. Please!

the wizard of tech badass? Wtf that makes no sense. They love dark souls so much the made a very similar loading screen. Lmao tf? “Badass”
@@reaper3509
The wizard is right.
@@reaper3509 It is badass to show your love for something even tho people will call it copying
Bhupesh Sharma not badass. Cute that they love them so much it influenced they’re style... y’all make no sense I’m out tho cya
I’m probably the only one in the world that was considering this game and then had to reconsider cause it’s “Souls Like”.
I'm at a point where I can't play games that don't have Soulslike combat.
Youd really like Fall Guys. the combat is so gripping
@@justinbean971 hahhahah
Probably because Souls games have nailed the physics of carrying and using different types of weapons and different weights.
@@RainmakerAnton good luck doing a roll while carrying a ultra greatsword in real life.
I'm usually not into souls-like games, but you may have just sold me on this one...
Me neither but I just beat this game the other day it’s so worth it
Dont bother if your not into dark souls, its a copy with just different names for stuff.
@@janitor8884 oh really? Thanks for letting me know. I have nothing against the Souls games, they're just not for me.
Two facts about that frog:
1. Its name is Gorf, which is Frog backwards.
2. Speaking with the frog enables or disables the background humming music. Its quite eerie actually, took me a while to realise.
The game for me really clicked when I learned how to integrate both the harden mechanic and special weapon abilities.
Remember people this game was purposely designed to be similar to Dark Souls
Yeap. Developers said they are a big fan of the Dark Soul series and likes.
"have you heared of mortal shell?"
*I have already finished it twice*
This was made by 15 people, I want to support these guys as much as possible they can go on to make more great things
btw falcon in dark souls there is a convenient feature mapped to l2 called a parry wich is very similar to the harden system
After watching this video, I’ll give the game another chance. I wasn’t too happy with it at first, but I’ll definitely give it another run.
I felt the same really might as well just go play any Dark souls and get the real souls experience.
The start of the game is rough. It gets better - a lot better - but you have to get through it.
Try using Tiel the acolyte. I wasn't feeling the game either until I found him. He gives you the most dark souls feeling
Just came out on psn for free cant wait to play it this weekend
“Silent Hill-looking monster person” LOL
Waiting for the physical release. Oct 2, can't wait!
Being a dark souls like needs to stop being said with a negative connotation. Honestly if your game is 99% percent dark souls and 1% unique, if it’s good than I’ll buy it everytime.
Imagine saying first
Do you guys have any news on games like Plan 8 and beyond good and evil 2?
My biggest complaint is that its too short... but besides that... it was an awesome experience.. sequel please!
POV your here because PlayStation plus
I honestly don't want another souls like.I just want Eldenring,Demon souls remake and Bloodborne ported to pc.
But....
Elden Ring was featured on a Microsoft event, so it's definitely coming to PC. I hope they work on Sekiro 2 after releasing that.
it baffles me as to how these guys made a game like this on such a small budget, this game is amazing, the weapons, the upgrade system, the story. This will definitely be the birth of something legendary. Please!
Eredrim, The Venerable + Martyr's Blade = I'm the Captain now!
Here goes all the "I'm first" and "nobody asked" comments
@Simple Man i like your name...its very simple
@Simple Man nobody asked.
epic games anyone??
yup
The new shell run is the definition of get gud son 😂
Enjoying it so far wish the parry mechanics were a tiny bit better but its all learning ☺
