  • With just hours before the implementation of the UK's new strict travel restrictions, I managed to get one final day trip in. While having a look through Ryanair's Black Friday sales I noticed very cheap fares to and from Milan Bergamo. Knowing that BGY is the biggest 737 MAX base outside of Stansted, I decided it was worth giving it a go to try and get on one of the new aircraft. Based flights out of Milan Bergamo are operated by Malta Air, an airline I first flew with to Cologne and back in 2019. I arrived at Manchester via train, which was an easy and pleasant experience with a nice view across the snowy landscape. A short walk across the skybridge and into the terminal. It was nice to see Terminal 1 back to a somewhat busy state while I waited for 9H-QBY to arrive on the inbound flight.
We boarded the aircraft around 5 minutes before the scheduled departure time and were ready to go around 10 minutes late, unfortunately, we ended up pushing back around 50 minutes late due to a lack of push back drivers available, by the time we got going it was starting to rain quite a lot, due to the near freezing temperatures, any more time on the ground would've probably required a de-icing before departure so it was good to get into the air. We climbed up into bright afternoon skies. The flight went by very quickly, I managed to get a quick power nap in before we began our descent under some stunning sunset skies. This approach into Bergamo was possibly the most stunning I've had in quite some time with stunning scenery, clear skies and amazing sunset lighting. We eventually landed and parked on stand around 35 minutes late. After a short bus ride and quick check of the relevant Covid paperwork, I had arrived in Italy, a brand new country for me!
Overall, despite the delay, this was a really nice flight with Malta Air, even at nearly 6 years old, the Boeing SkyInterior cabin was as pleasant as ever, the crew were fantastic and despite the delays, the whole departure and arrival experience was straightforward and easy, the views on the arrival more than made up for the late departure.
