I have watched this so many times and tried to get the relaxed strokes you have. I love this video and all your others. 🙏
Hello Jet! Practice is the key. I recommend buying some liquid Chinese ink and a couple of Chinese brushes. Hard to paint in Chinese technique using Western materials. For bamboo, hold the brush perpendicular to the paper and move the whole arm, not just the wrist. Keep going!
i watch several cbp teachers on youtube, and you are the easiest to follow! thank you!
Thanks, Cheryl! I want that on my epitaph! I always want to understand, so that's what I want to pass on to students, artists and followers. I'm glad to hear it works for you! Happy painting!

@evedust Thanks! A friend lent us a flip camera; we liked the result so much we thought we'd share it. I plan on more mini demos like this - it was so easy.

Is Sumi-e painting the same as Chimese brush painting?
Both are based on calligraphy strokes and use the same techniques. Sumi-e developed in Japan following the arrival of Buddhist monks from China and Korea, who brought with them Chinese calligraphy and brush painting as mental disciplines. Some would say that the differences in style are more philosophical.
Can you please do a tutorial for the orchid as well?
Thanks for the suggestion! i'll put it on the list. Happy painting!
