Me and my friend Bill climbed to the top of the Zugspitze in July of 1976. We spent one night sleeping in a tent on the side of the mountain. We were still climbing the first evening when the clouds came in so fast it almost instantly became night. We walked around looking for a relatively flat place to pitch our little army tent and quickly fell asleep out of sheer exhaustion. The next morning I woke up first and got out of the tent to answer the call of nature and instantly froze. Just a few feet from our tent was a sheer drop off that should we have fallen would have taken us down at least a thousand feet. I called to my friend Bill and told him to carefully come out of the tent as there was something he had to see. He was understandably astounded and so was I. It was a spectacular sight that morning as the clouds were now gone and the view was stupendous. We got to the top of the mountain and what made it even more special was that it was July 4th of the Bi-centennial year of American Independence. As U.S. soldiers serving in the Federal Republic of Germany we were especially proud and the memory of that day has been a highlight of my life. I am now 67 years old.
Wow! What a cool experience and story. We are not that bad-ass. Maybe one day we will do the hike all the way to the top. Luckily it think there is a hut now to stay in, so we won't have to camp next to a cliff, or worry about clouds. :D I love hearing stuff like this. Thanks for sharing. :D

Great job narrating and giving us tid bits of info from Garmisch-Partenkirchen all the way to the summit I was there in 1982, I was a U.S.ARMY soldier and it was the coolest place I have ever been ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD Including the Redwood trees in California in Yosemite National Park a close 2nd

Hi Guys, loving the videos.I love the way you summarise at the end, really useful. I did the Zugspitze trip three years ago and would also recommend Partnach Gorge if the weather is not great for the summit. I would also love to see you do a video on Lake Chiemsee including Herrenchiemsee New Palace. My Son lives in Munich and I'm going over again in June. Will look forward to anymore videos you do. Sure they will give me ideas for outings. You capture just how beautiful the region is. Keep up the good work!:)
Thanks! We actually hiked in and around Partnach Gorge with some friends back in September, and I agree, it's a great alternative to the Zugspitze! We are planning a video in the warmer months. In addition, we are hoping to cover the Bavarian lakes starting in April, so look out for Chiemsee. ;)

Really cool video. I'm glad you had such an awesome weather. I'm in Garmisch several times a year and often you can have really bad luck with the Zugspitze.
The secret we don't mention, is that we got snowed out of the Zugspitze two previous times in our attempts to film. :D Luckily, the third time was the charm. :)

Stayed in Garmisch back in the mid-80s and rode the gondola up the whole way. I believe the guys riding down on the top of the cars are just inspecting the towers as they pass over them. I actually saw the movie Back to the Future at the US Army base theater in Garmisch at the time. The one thing I remember most was the birds at the top that could just hover right next to the railings to grab french fries right out of your outstretched hand.
That's so cool! I wonder how much has changed in 40 years. I grew up in a military family, so I am pretty familiar with the military base movie theater experience. :D Although, I've never been to one as cool as in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Wish I had gone there when I was near. Also, if you could make fewer but longer edits. I wanted to see the panoramas for a number of more seconds but you also cut it too fast often showing the side of a building.
I hope you get to go back and experience it :) And yeah, I think you are right about the editing. This was my straight-up first video ever, and so I still had a lot to learn, I still do, about editing and the art of making videos. Recently though, I really have been trying to slow down the edit a little bit and let people just soak it in. If you check any of those videos out, let me know what you think? In fact in a couple days I'll be dropping a simple drone footage compilation of Bavaria set to some slow music purely for people who want to sit back and soak it up, maybe consider giving us a sub and checking that video out when it drops, I'm sure you'll love it.

Thanks! The Zugspitze makes an excellent day or weekend trip. I actually just went back to Garmisch two videos ago to show off a hidden castle ruin that even some locals don’t know about. That area just has so much to do! I hope you manage to get out there and enjoy it.
I took the train up and the elevator sorry cablecar down, you must take this trip sometimes. It was in the 80th's. Ohh this was in the summer.

I do hope the COVID situation allows for travel to resume, and that you can soon visit Bavaria safely. The Zuspitze is definitely a lot of fun, but if you are going to be here for a little while you might want to check out some of my other videos in the region. I've covered Bavaria pretty well at this point and have tons of suggestions for where else to go when in the area. The World of Castles, Forget Neuschwanstein, and Garmisch vs Mittenwald videos would all be applicable, though my favorite recommendation right now might be lake Walchensee :) I hope you get to have a fun and safe trip.
@@NearFromHome ideally we’d be there for 8 days, so there might be plenty of time to move around, if the situation allows it.
I was checking the Garmisch vs Mittenwald video just a few hours ago, it was also pretty entertaining and it made us reconsider where we should spend our time and how to divide it properly between all the beautiful places in the area. The main thing would be to wait for the announcements on state specific restrictions and see how the next two months look like for regional travel.
Otherwise, we were also planning on doing a different type of trip in the area, maybe staying in a house close to the mountains (there were some good accommodation prices in Farchant with 100% flexible refund options), work remotely for a few hours a day and also enjoy the surroundings, research different hiking routes and maybe not risk going that far away (?). It wouldn’t be what we were initially expecting to do, but we are craving to get out of the city for a while now and just do something different while still enjoying the beautiful mountains and nature that surrounds the area. What a wonderful and informative video, thank you so much. I'd like to ask a rather 'silly' question as you say "daunting" and "trepidation" etc., just HOW harrowing (bends, steep,...? i.e. scary!) is the cogwheel up to Zugspitzplatt? (We would take it from Eibsee and there is no way I would manage the cable car, but I don't want to miss out on the (lower) glacier.
I wouldn't say the cog wheel train is too scary, especially compared to the cable car! It's not too bendy, and I'm not sure if the steep drop is super noticeable unless you are hanging out the window. Much of the ride is inside a tunnel as well!

Pretty good video, thanks for the info. I'm planning on visiting in June, when it's not so cold. Any recommendations on what to do when there's no snow? Also, maybe I missed it, but I couldn't see the Austrian side on this video.
I'm a railways engineer, so I 'm specially looking forward to riding on the cogwheel train.
What a cool job! I think the best thing to do would be to find a panorama path to walk in the summer. We showed the Austrian side in the broll sequence, but I don't think we talked about it. The shots of the wooden goat are all on the Austrian side. lol
Hi Ben, Many thanks for posting such a great video. Image quality and production outstanding. I know Garmisch Partenkirchen and Zugspitze very well having skied there for many years.
Can i ask what camera\equipment did you film this presentation in. Any particular settings and so forth and in particular the editing software used? I usually post (unedited) videos of my ski trips or adventures but thinking i may start producing a more polished look if i have the time. Many thanks and great work - Richie
Sure thing mate.
So this video is mostly shot on an Sony A7 III, with a 35mm f1.4 lens. Though supplemental shots were made with a GoPro Hero 7 black. Both of which have ring adapters to allow the use of a variable ND filter to make sure that my shutter speed remains at the correct angle to frame rate. The frame rates mostly being 24 for dialog and 60 for slo mo.
Editing was done through adobe premiere pro. Where we also mixed in off camera audio that was recorded via a lav mic and separate device I keep in my pocket.
Hopefully that helps a little bit, but if you have any more specific questions then don’t be afraid to keep them coming. If you liked this video then I’d recommend checking out Ehrenberg as it’s only one more hour south and is really something special. Also like and subscribe :) lol
@@NearFromHome Hi Ben, Many thanks for the reply and for the detailed information. That camera looks like a solid piece of kit and of course the GoPro is top of the sports cam market. Personally I have defaulted to Chinese Imitation models which deliver 80-90% of the spec and functionality for a fraction of the price within my price point. Agreed that Adobe is a very powerful editor.
I have viewed several of your other features and each one is as entertaining. I have also liked and subscribed so will get the updates as they come through. It’s difficult to make the videos any more awesome but if I could suggest something. A fact sheet or details on prices would be helpful. Such as mentioning the Bavaria Card for DeutscheBhan for group travel or being able to purchase the all in one ticket from Munich HBF to top of Zugspitze perhaps. Also if you are making additional videos during the winter season perhaps profile the Garmischer ski ticket which includes return train and ski pass. Its fantastic value.
I will be passing through Munich between Jan 8th and 12th for a few days skiing in Garmisch Partenkirchen perhaps our paths will cross and grab a beer with you and discuss filming/editing.

Thanks for watching! I used a Bayern ticket to take the train down the Garmisch, and then bought the generic Zugspitze peak ticket from the Zugspitzbahn station. However at the Munich Hauptbahnhof you can buy a combo ticket to save some money.
The crossing platforms up at the Alpspitze would require either a broader combo ticket or another ticket from what I bought as it’s a different peak. I’m not sure if it’d be possible to do both in one day, maybe, but myself I’ve never done it.

Thanks mate! And you are totally right, in the future we are going to start adding price breakdowns. It just completely slipped my mind. I also plan on making a video breaking down train ticket purchasing and prices as well. Since a lot of the day trips from Munich all use the same ~25€ Bayern ticket.
The Zugspitze itself is a little pricey, costing 59€

Just to make it clear, you spent 59 euros total in transportation from Munich to Zugspitze and back, or 59+25 euros?
59+25. It’s ~25 to get from Munich to Garmisch and then 59 to ascend from Garmisch to the top of the Zugspitze.

We were there at the end of January, so you should have about the same amount of snow! I don‘t love this time of the year in Bavaria, because I like to hike, but if you‘re interested in snowy Alpine views, it might be perfect for you!
Hello, Thanks for the great video ! We are planning to stay in Garmisch for couple of days, family with kids (youngest is 10) How many hours does it take to enjoy a trip to the Zugspitze? from start to finish, including ascension time with the cog train then spend time at the platue and then the summit then descend down?
I would say half a day! Add an extra hour if you want to take some pictures at Lake Eibsee!

No worries about the questions. I have realized that I keep forgetting to include price breakdowns in my videos, so that’s something I’ll be working on.
I wouldn’t go this weekend, and would instead suggest waiting a few more weeks. The igloo hotel hasn’t finished construction yet, so you can’t see it or get a drink there yet. Also a few of the toboggan routes haven’t had enough snow and are still closed. So depending on what you want to do, you might not get the best value for your money just yet.
Getting there and back, I show leaving from the Munich Central Station with a direct train to Garmisch. The ticket will cost around 25€-ish. If you only go for a single day then you could use that same ticket to go in the morning and come back at night. You can purchase this ticket from any of the red DB ticket machines, or even the DB Navigator app.
The last thing to consider is the ticket to the top of the Zugspitze itself, which isn’t cheap sadly enough. It costs about 59€ not to mention food and beer on the mountain.
This isn’t the cheapest day trip from Munich, but with good weather I think it can be really fun. For something cheaper I’d suggest watching my video on Ehrenberg because besides the train ticket, and being 1 more hour further away, it’s completely free!
@@NearFromHome I ended up actually going, there was still a route for tobogganing which was still fun. I think for the experience it was worth it. I managed to get a winter combo ticket which was cheaper. It gets you from Munich to Garmisch, up to the top of Zugspitze and back.
Just for anyone interested in the future. You can get "Garmisch Ski Ticket" which includes a train ride from Munich to the top of Zugspitze and back aswell as a Skipass. Costs 60€ as of right now.

Hi, this was in February. There will be a lot of snow up there in January. I managed to get it the igloo with water proof hiking boots with a good grip!

It will be warm in Germany, but still cold at the top. Bring a jacket!
which month did you go in? September? I am surprised it was still that snowy in Sept, I am thinking of going once the global situation improves. But I am thinking which month would be best to go, as I do want to see the peaks covered in snow. Any suggestions?
I think my favorite time to go would be closer to proper winter. Around late November is a pretty great time, but even into December/January. By then the igloo hotel will be fully formed plus the sun will set before final call off of the mountain, which is about as beautiful as you can imagine and then some. The downside of this time though is that my other Garmisch suggestions like Werdenfels castle, Partnachklamm gorge, Ehrenburg castle, and what not can become rather hard to do depending on your luck with the snowfall. So it’s a tough balancing act but no matter what you do I’m confident you’ll have a great time.

It’ll cost about 25 to take the train from Munich and then 59 per person to get to the summit. If you go to the DB desk in Munich Hauptbahnhof then you can buy a discounted combo ticket.

I’m sure you can forgive us, it was the first video we ever produced. We’ve made 62 more since then, so hopefully if you check them out you’ll agree that we have improved!
Great Video but, I find it strange that you should asked your female companion a question, then you jumped right in to answer the very question you asked her. That wasn’t very nice or polite.
I mean you aren't wrong, and we would go on to change how these were written to address that exact problem. However, in context this was our very first video for the entire channel and the whole thing was entirely scripted. So it was less an interruption and more poor writing and presentation skills, as we wrote it that way on purpose and had rehearsed the whole thing multiple times exactly as it is in the video. Camille was much more camera shy at the time, we both were, so it was written that I would introduce the question and go first in answering it. We later changed that to fix how it might come off. In our latest videos we are trying to scrap the whole conclusion format in general to go with something much less scripted and more natural.
