@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines on the contrary the bashing came from Arnold. When Mike and his high intensity system started challenging Arnold and Weider’s system of training it didn’t go down well. During one seminar Arnold tried rubbishing Mike’s philosophy, unbeknownst to him Mike was in the audience. Suffice to say Arnold did a backtrack that if it was a moonwalk it would have challenged Michael Jackson. Arnold was all about Arnold and Weider was all about Weider. That’s why they got on so well. When Arnold was given the floor to make his point about why he wanted the two classes abolished. His reaction was to act like a petulant child bereft of anything meaningful to say. Which is why he accused Boyer of acting like a child. Boyer wasn’t annoyed he found the whole incident bizarre. It was Arnold being Arnold. Or as Mike put it ‘a big Prussian son of a bitch trying to walk all over us’.
I always wonder how this would have affected Arnold's career if he ended up getting like 5th place in the 1980 Olympia. Breaking his winning streak and affecting all the promos for him in Conan The Barbarian coming up. Plus all his ad venue as top champ in the magazines. Seeing an alternate reality to what really happened would be such an interesting unfolding of what may have happened for many of bodybuilders continuing careers. So true. Mike Mentzer winning the Olympia would have changed the trajectory of bodybuilding and the Olympia forever. But it was not to be, as former competitor, Roger Walker once said "Arnold flew over in his own plane, with his own film crew. They followed him to the toilets, showers, everywhere. They were here to promote and publicize his new movie. There was NO WAY he was going to lose, and everyone knew it."

@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines How could the judges tell when he didn't do the poses that were called? Sort of makes a mockery out comparing compulsory poses.
My only comment about the 1980 Mr OLympia is that I use to go to a gym that was owned by 2 brother here in Australia that got the opportunity to see Arnold compete. They told me that Arnold was the most impressive on stage and that he deserved to win. You can't judge a contest by photos.
@Mantastic-ho3vm Yep, when I heard Mentzer followed Skalak's example I was pissed off. He left all his fans over one loss proving it was never about his fans but all about himself and his fragile ego. Others were crapped on by the IFBB such as Padilla, one of the most under-rated BB's of all time. He was way better than Columbo. But Padilla never quit. Padilla was the short version of Arnold IMHO. Then we have Lee Priest. He never quite over the IFBB crapping on him. Look at Jay Cutler. He got second to Coleman many times before finally dethroning him. Then lost one and came back to recapture. Although Arnold had much, much more potential than Chris Dickerson he shouldn't have won in 1980. Mike Mentzer wasn't conditioned enough to win the title. He was too flat but I put it him before Boyer Coe. Frank was very conditioned but he lacked of size although if he had won with Arnold I wouldn't have surprised too. Chris was in his top condition and was complete in comparison with Arnold. In 1981 the best competitors were Danny Padilla and Roy Callander but Frank Columbu won ! Even Tom Platz and Chris Dickerson were better than Franco and deserved 3th and 4th place. Frankly, Franco could have fought for 5th place with Jusup Wilkosz and for me Jusup was also better.
Bill Pearl was supposed to be the head judge and he was with full knowledge that Dickerson was competing. Pearl was involved with the judging of other recent contests including Dickerson.
Arnold’s chest and arms were just so dominant his back was great too and his calves and abs. In 1980 his thighs were pretty weak and in some poses Arnold looked weak but he was probably the best ever at avoiding doing things that made him look weak.
All the talk about Arnold being 'small' in 80, but he still made nearly all the rest of the line up look like boys by comparison in terms of his chest, traps, arms. His legs were definitely weak, but to me he still had the best upper body there. But I know plenty will and do disagree. That's the thing about bodybuilding, et the end of the day it largely comes down to personal tastes and preferences....I don't know of a single Olympia win that you won't find others who think someone else should have won. But, it's fun to keep the conversation going 😁👍🏻
LucianPopa I don't disagree with your points, his legs were clearly really weak in 80 and certainly no where near the level required, as you say, even with personal preference taken into account. All I saying is that some of the criticism has taken on the level of hyperbole at times and that due to the absolute focus on Arnold (and him not being good enough) there doesn't seem to be much balanced discussion about the flaws in the other competitors: of which there was plenty. So don't find the discussions overly balanced.
A bodybuilder is only a good look from a distance. Up close it has no comparative advantage due to proportion and size up close. Arnold was good looking from the vantage of the audience to the stage.
Funny I remember that there had been two weight classes for YEARS including the previous year. So Arnold wasn't wanting to change anything! Just continue as previousl years!
Well Arnold was not in his best shape, but he did stand out on the scene and was very good at posing.Had he been in 74-75 shape,he would have smoked them.
What about Yates winning with a torn biceps or Ronnie needing a perfect scores on posing and to out pose flex wheeler and does to win MR.O or Jay Cutler beating martinez and everybody back stage had him winning sound familiar and the biggest thing Arnold only trained 8 weeks while what everybody else got a year and it looked like he belonged on stage so what if Arnold would have had the same amount of time to train then what it might have been not even close then Mr heavy duty went out smoked a cig which is not good for a image of a MR.O
Did you all watch the new Jocko Arnold podcast interview? It’s really good. He talks about the 80 olympia and admits he backed out of judging to compete last minute. But he didn’t say much else.
I've got the video of the 80 Olympia...there's no way Arnold won--wouldn't of placed him in top 5! It was close between Mentzer and Dickerson. The former had a better physique but was shaky during posing and Dickerson, as usual, had a great routine. I think Roger Walker was overlooked: dense and ripped with no weak points...look at his back, legs and abs density compared to Arnold! I would of given him 3rd. 1) Dickerson 2) Mentzer 3) Walker 4) Coe Arnold would've been 5th at best.
How do you have it? Can I have a copy so I can post it on my podcast channel the underground sound? Look up underground sound Bostin Loyd you’ll find the channel
he did win politically but I still think he looked the best on stage. Not in individual pictures but his posing next to others on video. I don’t think there’s 1 Mr Olympia that won without controversy. But that being said... I’m a huge Arnold fanboy, but I’ll admit Arnold woulda won in 1980 even if he didn’t train for it. He coulda came on stage with a gut and woulda won. That’s the power of politics and having the right connections.
Thumbs up and already subscribed. Always like John Hansen's Podcasts. The simple hard truth about the 1980 Olympia is the world found out 80%of Arnold was still better than everyone else. Hard pill to swallow, especially for people with small ego's but it's the truth. Arnold was blessed with better genetics not just in being taller but also his perfect "bone structure" proportions but also Arnold is a sculptor/artist like Rafael or Miachael Angelo, how? he sculpted his body with weights instead of clay. What do you mean? He did what in my "Professionally trained Artists"community is we know as inner shape balancing. I don't get it, can you illustrate? maybe, the laymen don't understand but here it goes: In art school we draw about 600 sketches per semester, bodies, faces etc., we get sick of it, but one thing we learn is how to "balance sweeps", for example Arnold's trapezoid is long and begins the upper sweep, then its interrupted by his mid body and it gets picked up with another sweep in his lower back, where if you made an imaginary path line it lines up perfectly, perfectly, let me say it a third time, perfectly. Most bodybuilders either don't' have that sweep or have it 'miss aligned, or unequally in size, they don't even look for sweeps never mind train to mind them. Now factor in that there are sweeps "all over" the human body that we artists have to draw with 'construction lines' first which we later erase when we draw in the actual muscles. Arnold has "ALL of these sweeps right", in the right begin and end, in the right balanced size for both sides, and aligned on top of it!!. So in 1980 he still had ALL that "symphony of shape" just a little smaller than usual is all. So what? he still had it and so he won. The reason you will always have controversy is because most people can't draw and never will. I picked up a pencil at 5 years old and could draw, it was already there, I duplicated the comics in front of me in seconds while ALL the other children in the classroom could not, only bad draw sticks and circles, still took years of schooling and training to train my eye and what to look for and understand human shape. Most people not only do NOT have the eye, they also don't have the training. Sadly, many bodybuilders were born with muscles beginning and ending in the wrong places proportionally, so they will never achieve that "symphony of shape" no matter how hard they train, how big and defined they get. Very much like a guy with short legs and a long upper body will never be able to change that curse no matter how big he gets. Men don't like to face those facts, but nature is nature, it's what it is. Arnold won because his parents were up on stage competing with the best GENES out there, and he was up there having developed those genes to 80% of their potential which was still better than everybody else, if not as good as his usual 100%. That is the 1980 Olympia explained for anybody who with the guts and courage to accept it. Stuff with a marker and simple photos of Arnold I have explained/shown to family and friends only to watch their faces light up when they see it. I should probably set up a channel where I show this, will probably get a million hits.
Mantastic (Captain Mantastic, Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines, OSBR, AntiHit, MarkHayden, and others for over 15 years) has left the building for now! Lol!
It was said here, 'Everybody looks at the open Mr. Olympia as the REAL Mr. Olympia' ... Nope Nope... the open Mr. O is looked at today by everyone I know as the carnival freak Mr. Olympia, and we have no interest in these near 300 pound chemical clowns.
Arnold was 30 pounds bigger and 6 inches taller than Dickerson. Name me one competitor that was bigger than Arnold. Plus , Arnold always had a great shape to his muscles, like he did a lot of stretching.
@LucianPopa Arnold had better calves than anyone and tight glutes and hamstrings. When he flexed his quads they leaped to attention and he looked proportional as he flexed with his arms down to his sides.
Size alone don’t mean squat. He’s structured was way of from previous years. Mentzer was in much better shape and condition. Fanatics get blinded many times and forget to be objective. He was Weider boy, plain and simple.
But Arnold only had 8 weeks to train while everybody had a year now think if Arnold had the same amount of time to train but nobody brings that up and think for training 8 weeks he looked like he belonged on stage
No one talks about it because it has nothing to do with nothing. We would merely be speculating. What each bodybuilder does to prep for a show is irrelevant. We don't know that others did and no one really cares.
Actually Arnold trained for over 6 months. The director for Conan the Barbarian wanted Arnold to get his body weight up to 230 lbs where it showed him as a older more massive individual. The director asked Arnold if he could get up to that body weight and he said he could. Arnold trained hard and was on a split routine. Contrary what other people was saying about him. Arnold was unable to get up to that body weight. He was long, lanky, skinny and malnourished looking.
Who cares what Danny says. Him and Arnold were good friends and he idolized that liberal creep. I wonder how he felt when he was shafted in the 81 Olympia to 5th place (looking his best) by Arnold"s romance buddy, Gyno boy Franco? The same with Tom Platz. Two shitty Olympias back to back.

Mike was the most conditioned there, you did not see the photos in his heavy duty mind and body
Bill Pearl was supposed to be the head judge and he was with full knowledge that Dickerson was competing. Pearl was involved with the judging of other recent contests including Dickerson.
Arnold’s chest and arms were just so dominant his back was great too and his calves and abs. In 1980 his thighs were pretty weak and in some poses Arnold looked weak but he was probably the best ever at avoiding doing things that made him look weak.
great memories this is pure gold most other "Bodybuilding" channels just seem to be about bullshit
Not hardly
Funny I remember that there had been two weight classes for YEARS including the previous year. So Arnold wasn't wanting to change anything! Just continue as previousl years!
Arnold told me once... I'm gunna distroy budobuilding!!!
And he did so after that show 😂🤣
Well Arnold was not in his best shape, but he did stand out on the scene and was very good at posing.Had he been in 74-75 shape,he would have smoked them.
And he won't--ever!
I've got the video of the 80 Olympia...there's no way Arnold won--wouldn't of placed him in top 5! It was close between Mentzer and Dickerson. The former had a better physique but was shaky during posing and Dickerson, as usual, had a great routine. I think Roger Walker was overlooked: dense and ripped with no weak points...look at his back, legs and
abs density compared to Arnold! I would of given him 3rd.
1) Dickerson
2) Mentzer
3) Walker
4) Coe
Arnold would've been 5th at best.
How do you have it? Can I have a copy so I can post it on my podcast channel the underground sound? Look up underground sound Bostin Loyd you’ll find the channel
@@davenportbarbell734 go to Prime Cuts Bodybuilding DVDs....it's there under 1980 Mr olympia, 2 DVD set, $39.95
Dickerson with his little arms ,torn bicep ,ghastly torn pec,I don't think so
Arnold was always overrated and only had a notable physique when he was on gear.
Great stories. Arnie won because all eyes were on him. It’s history now.
Plus the Gyno !! Wow !! AND no legs. Dickerson obviously getting the 82 because he didn't boycott the 81.
Didn't another Australian bodybuilder Ian Riley compete in the 1980 Olympia
Totally agree with what Haney says about the pecking order. Know you're place on the gym floor
he did win politically but I still think he looked the best on stage.
Even when he’s not 100%, Arnie is a winner through and through.

I agree 💪👍
@Mantastic-ho3vm You are right, will do it soon.
......Still waiting for that to happen. What's taking so long?

@@tomasf.alvarez9556 Mentzer had a shallow chest compared to his arms. And his look was good but his chest lagged behind in thickness.
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines Exactly right!
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines I knew you thought Mentzer had a great ass lol Mentzer lover old stool lol
I know the details why the judging panel was fixed John. Tell u in private.

Didn't anybody interview Arnold?
Apparently Arnold doesn't want to talk about it
But Arnold only had 8 weeks to train while everybody had a year now think if Arnold had the same amount of time to train but nobody brings that up and think for training 8 weeks he looked like he belonged on stage
Don't care Arnold wasn't his best but he was still better compared to the rest I mean does anyone see Conan The Barbarian up there besides Arnold?
Danny Padilla said he thought Arnold was good enough and deserved to win the contest.
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines 🐴💩
Very magnanimous of him 😀
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines like they would ?????
Who cares what Danny says. Him and Arnold were good friends and he idolized that liberal creep. I wonder how he felt when he was shafted in the 81 Olympia to 5th place (looking his best) by Arnold"s romance buddy, Gyno boy Franco? The same with Tom Platz. Two shitty Olympias back to back.
Danny still works for the Weider corporation now?
Arnold still looks better.
1972; Busek was Not the promoteur . He worked for Athletic Sports Journal
A good friend of Arnold who has followed him when he came to the US from Europe. Trained with Arnold as well and was a judge at 80 Olympia and gave Arnold first place looking like dog meat

40 years on and the Arnold haters are still crying over the 1980 Olympia.... get over it Arnold won move on and get a life
That's like saying that people today are still talking about WW2 or any other historic event.
This show, along with the '81 Olympia, have infamous places in history, and it's a shame.
@@PaulSter but Arnold is being judged by his 1975 physique standard not the physiques on stage that day ... they all had strengths and weaknesses but he was still the best ... most of these people moaning weren’t even born then and probably never competed in their life’s

@Mantastic-ho3vm Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines, Captain Mantastic, Mantastic and others: Padilla destroyed Dumbo Columbo! Danny was ripped, more balanced, bigger arms, calves, and legs. The dead one had terrible legs (sausage thighs, with one of them being smaller than the other), just like his bromance love partner, Stupidnegger who also had shitty legs in the Olympia prior (and promoted this show), Golf ball sized biceps, to round out the terrible package he had to offer. The worst boofest in Olympia history! Your other worthless account (Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines) was here as well. Lol!
