I greatly admire Roger Walker ; not only his physique but his high degree of intelligence, brutal honesty, British sense of humour and wit. He really told it like it is with a lot of insight some of the other competitors who were interviewed did not display to the same degree.
I just cannot believe that you were able to get all these champions to talk about the 1980 Olympia and truly express themselves. You are just amazing! Thank you Mr Hansen for this extraordinary video.
I remember watching 'The Comeback'about Arnold's return. Not so keen on Arnold, but I enjoy Tom Platz in the video enormously. You do get to see bodybuilders back stage at the 1980 Olympia and see some legends. One in particular was the Great Demnis Tinerino who is in conversation with his partner Kenny. He says " Remember the golden rule." " He who has the gold makes the rules" Such an incredibly smart and pithy way of expressing the truth of the competition. At the time of watching the film I was unaware of the controversy and new to bodybuilding. That one line delivered by Tinerino sums up the entire show. He would have made a great interviewee.
@@oldskoolbodybuildingroutin7178cry baby far from it ! I remember reading the result and comments made back then in muscle fitness and Arnold stated I don't bumped into Roger elbow while posing because he is bigger than I am .
@@oldskoolbodybuildingroutin7178 wrong I remember that time Arnold was far from his best even the network knew it that's why they didn't air it! And the crowd was pissed and he tarnished his legacy especially find out that most of the judges was in his hip pocket that's facts sir !

@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines Wrong again, from our stupid, multiple account, Mike Mentzer troller. Roger Waller weighed at 235 LBS vs 218 LBS from Wedlock Arnold. Roger made him look like cancer ridden patient. Arnold was taller and look like a giraffe compared to Walker. Arnold's buddy, Paul Graham (who lived with Arnold, back in the day, best man at his wedding, did criminal business together, which Paul took the rap for, changed a judge the last minute, had friends of Arnold there, remove posing coordinator, after prejudging, had Arnold train at his gym, etc;) made sure NWO Arnold won his contest. Hence winning the most controversial, and corrupt bodybuilding contest of all time. Arnold admitted nudging elbows with Roger and which Arnold started it, Arnold said, "We playfully did this together, because I didn't want to make him mad, because he was so big and powerful." Roger would have destroyed him and scraped him up from the floor
This is a great montage! I've seen all of these videos separately. This montage really shows the consensus about Arnold's true placing that day. As always John, you do a fantastic work job documenting the history of bodybuilding throughout the firsthand accounts of the people that lived it.
Perhaps your best show ever. I love the 80 and 81 Olympia contests. So many guys came in their best condition and yet controversial decisions tarnished both shows. First, in my opinion, Arnold and Franco did the sport a disservice by competing in those shows. Both well below their best should have stayed away. They put everyone involved in those shows in compromised positions. Secondly, if they got what they deserved, they both would have done no better than 5th place. Yet, the other guys in both shows looked so good that they are my favorite bodybuilders of all time. I have my iron man mags from both of those shows and they have the greatest pictures of these men ever. Too bad the selfish egos of Arnold and Franco had to interfere.
@@gerryiannuzzi5122 You won't be disappointed. The book is as detailed as it gets about the 1980 and 1981 Mr Olympia shows. You will be left in no doubt about just how corrupt both 'contests' were.
@Mario Cantani The Comebacks is book one of volume three of Muscle, Smoke and Mirrors.I think it's only available from Randy Roach's Muscle, Smoke and Mirros web site. I hope this helps.
My thoughts exactly, makes me wonder just how low arnold would go to acheive fame and wealth? By the sounds of it arnold was prepared to fully emerse himself amongst the filth and shit of society and do whatever it takes.
Arnold also said that after awhile he will have his Olympia win number 7 and that will be all that matters. He had a drawn face or death face. Cheeks were drawn.
I haven't finished watching this just yet due to the length but it looks and sounds very interesting to me. I'll have to come back later and finish later.
Excellently done. Arnold should not have won that and everyone knew it. He shouldn’t have won in 1972 either . And Franco in 1981? You kidding me? All political. Nothing more .
ROGER WALKER WHAT A CLASS ACT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE GUY DOES NOT WEAR ANY MASKS JUST SAYS THINGS AS THEY ARE A STRIAGHT SHOOTER WHAT A RARE INDIVIDUAL
Chris Dickerson's memory of that night must be fading, as per the witnesses- "Among the competing bodybuilders Chris Dickerson, who finished 2nd ran out of the theater when the contest ended and “disappeared into the night.” Reasoning behind this is that he was not expected to place so high; maybe he feared retaliation."
A bit before Mentzer passed away Arnold visited him and they buried their differences. Mentzer would refer to Arnold afterwards as the greatest bodybuilder of all time. As far as Arnold's antics, it should be clear, he was up to his psychological games and he was trying to eliminate direct competition.
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines My god what a stupid thing to say, Mike didn't go around fixing contests...did he! Your speculating on a fantasy scenario of what if to delude yourself for your own hero worship, that your idol can be justified positively in any light and therefore can do no wrong. Just how stupid do you want to get?
Steven Roberts He means from a bodybuilding standpoint. I think he would be more highly regarded today if he skipped this contest. It's a black spot on his record.

Hey John any where I can find the links or anything pertaining to his comment about… Once upon a time in Australia article?… I can't find anything anywhere I'd really love to read that
I think Mike Mentzer, Boyer Coe et al would have got the better of Arnold as they both were very fast, powerful and had wrestling backgrounds ( Mentzer) . However Ken Waller who was close by had a reputation of being quite the fighter and he may have come to Arnold's defence although he was friendly with Mentzer and Mentzer was incredibly strong which made him respected. I do realize strength doesn't necessarily make one a good fighter. It would have been a donnybrook with the Sardinian Samson although unsure how agile Franco was with his messed up knee. Roger Walker was actually a British Royal Marine and I'm sure he could have handled himself. Viator was as strong as an ox. I can imagine 15-20 powerful guys fighting. It could be a WWF event. Roy Callender was another powerful guy who actually did pro wrestling but he was very fast.
Mike would have wrecked him... Ric Drasin saw Arnold get in a dust up at Gold's in the 1970's and Arnold backed down! This is for real, look up Arnold Fight Gold's and it will come up here on UA-cam!!!
@@TheSpritz0 I think you may be referring to Jerry Brainum's account of when a guy who apparently was under the influence of drugs started a fight with Arnold. If so it apparently was stopped by Dan Howard,.Arnold received a couple of punches,.but then got the guy in a headlock and the guy bit him. Or is there a separate incident.
@@TheSpritz0 Jerry Brainium talked about Arnold's fight and he said the other guy chickened out. Arnold overpowered him. Branium said, the other guy was as tall as Arnold and was a big guy so Arnold was not beating up on small guys. Just because Arnold decided not to escalate it further, does not mean he could not have beaten Mentzer up. No one knows what could have happened. Arnold was a lot bigger and Mentzer was only on 800 calorie diet during the competition so no one can tell me he would have overpowered a 5.5 inches taller Arnold. Regarding the gym fight, Arnold got him in a head lock and then he bit Arnold. The guy was as big as Arnold and claimed to be a local boxer. The fight got broken out and Arnold asked him to come with him to the alley to finish the fight. Arnold was a lot bigger, taller and had the size advantage compared to Mentzer or Coe. Mentzer was only 5'8" and size does matter. Arnold was no slouch. He used to beat people up with he was 250+ lbs in Munich in the Beer hall. It is a well known fact. Arnold simply did not want to escalate his war with Mentzer and Coe.
@@odessafile75 Also, Arnold told him to come with him to the back alley so that Arnold could finish the fight. Remember that as well. The guy chickened out and walked out. The guy was as big as Arnold from what Jerry said, but claimed to be a boxer. Also, 250 lbs Arnold used to beat up German guys in Munich when they all got into bar fights in the Beer hall. Arnold himself said, he used to pick fights in Germany. He was no slouch.
For several years in a row, the O was won by men with relatively small legs. But at that time, Arnold was bigger than the sport. His star was on the rise.
@Mario Cantani I don't believe Jeff was referring to the Olympia winners from the 60s Larry Scott and Sergio as he spoke to several years in a row ( prior to 1980). He may have been referring to Franco and Zane . It's kind of hard to describe Franco's legs in 1976. They may not have been Platz like but unsure if they could be described as " small" for a 5 feet 4.5 inch bodybuilder. They had an unusual shape and were small and less defined only in comparison to his enormous, ripped torso. While people describe Zane's legs as small I thought they were a good size for his height and bone structure and proportional to his upper body. In 1972 they actually looked huge. Zane's thighs in 77 to 80 looked better than Arnold's 80 legs in my opinion.
I thinks he means they were not the cartoonish thighs seen today. Frank Zane actually stopped doing squats since his thighs we're getting too big. Arnold's thighs always seemed a little thin to me, except for 1974. But they were cut to ribbons.
@@kurtvonfricken6829 Zane's thighs were at his biggest at the 72 Olympia I think . But his calves although quite developed were not exactly in proportion to his thighs. It seems Zane allowed his thighs to shrink a bit from the mid 70s to early 80s.
odessafile75 He did it on purpose. His thighs were his fastest-growing body part. He actually stopped doing heavy squats. Unlike some bodybuilders known for one or two freaky body parts ( Tom Platz) he was smart and kept everything in perfect proportion.
Thanks John. What is interesting is that Coe, Dickerson, Zane, Walker, Callender, Bannout did not say they should have won but Arnold should not have placed higher than 5th to 9th. There is a general consensus that Zane, Coe, Mentzer or Dickerson should have won. Then you have another group including Walker, Callender, Tinnerino et al who looked better than Arnold. Even the guys who placed quite low such as Padilla, Duval, .Emmott , Viator, Bannout were arguably in better shape and more proportional. I'm unsure how Waller should have placed. I think Walker said it best. Arnold is wearing a stolen watch. I had seen Coe, Zane, Dickerson, Tinnerino, Ray Mentzer ( who was taller but not as freakier as Mike) compete/ guest pose from 1979 to 1981. They all looked better than Arnold. The corruption in the IFBB was incredible as described by Roger Walker, Boyer Coe, Zane etc. The honest judge Dennis Stallard was discharged, Serge Nubret was discarded, a criminal and Arnold buddy was promoting the contest. The other judges could be bought, swayed etc.
@@smattgoss Do you mind me asking what age group you are in? I find those who think Arnold was the best were very young or not necessarily even born in 1980. Those of us of a certain age such as 55 and up ( I'm 59) who met/ attended contests, saw guest poses, or saw these guys training have a different perspective. Coe, Mentzer, Callender etc were shorter than Arnold but not " small". Boyer Coe was one of the most impressive bodybuilders I have ever seen. Callender was massive. Mike Mentzer and his younger brother Ray were Herculean.
odessafile75 Ray was noticeably bigger than mike and even Arnold so if we are giving out awards based in size alone Ray Mentzer wins hands down. Overall appearance is where is at. That's where smaller guys can really shine like Zane, dickerson, makoway, sean ray, Bob Paris. They all won more than ray mentzer even though he was much bigger.
Thumbs up and already subscribed. Always like John Hansen's Podcasts. The simple hard truth about the 1980 Olympia is the world found out 80%of Arnold was still better than everyone else. Hard pill to swallow, especially for people with small ego's but it's the truth. Arnold was blessed with better genetics not just in being taller but also his perfect "bone structure" proportions but also Arnold is a sculptor/artist like Rafael or Miachael Angelo, how? he sculpted his body with weights instead of clay. What do you mean? He did what in my "Professionally trained Artists"community is we know as inner shape balancing. I don't get it, can you illustrate? maybe, the laymen don't understand but here it goes: In art school we draw about 600 sketches per semester, bodies, faces etc., we get sick of it, but one thing we learn is how to "balance sweeps", for example Arnold's trapezoid is long and begins the upper sweep, then its interrupted by his mid body and it gets picked up with another sweep in his lower back, where if you made an imaginary path line it lines up perfectly, perfectly, let me say it a third time, perfectly. Most bodybuilders either don't' have that sweep or have it 'miss aligned, or unequally in size, they don't even look for sweeps never mind train to mind them. Now factor in that there are sweeps "all over" the human body that we artists have to draw with 'construction lines' first which we later erase when we draw in the actual muscles. Arnold has "ALL of these sweeps right", in the right begin and end, in the right balanced size for both sides, and aligned on top of it!!. So in 1980 he still had ALL that "symphony of shape" just a little smaller than usual is all. So what? he still had it and so he won. The reason you will always have controversy is because most people can't draw and never will. I picked up a pencil at 5 years old and could draw, it was already there, I duplicated the comics in front of me in seconds while ALL the other children in the classroom could not, only bad draw sticks and circles, still took years of schooling and training to train my eye and what to look for and understand human shape. Most people not only do NOT have the eye, they also don't have the training. Sadly, many bodybuilders were born with muscles beginning and ending in the wrong places proportionally, so they will never achieve that "symphony of shape" no matter how hard they train, how big and defined they get. Very much like a guy with short legs and a long upper body will never be able to change that curse no matter how big he gets. Men don't like to face those facts, but nature is nature, it's what it is. Arnold won because his parents were up on stage competing with the best GENES out there, and he was up there having developed those genes to 80% of their potential which was still better than everybody else, if not as good as his usual 100%. That is the 1980 Olympia explained for anybody who with the guts and courage to accept it. Stuff with a marker and simple photos of Arnold I have explained/shown to family and friends only to watch their faces light up when they see it. I should probably set up a channel where I show this, will probably get a million hits.
Interestingly, about Arnold, he does look slender, but he has his natural ability that when he poses and flexes, it seems like he actually gets bigger, and spreads out much wider than he is just walking around. That’s always been his strong attribute looking at the photos he still looks superior, objectively I think just his aura created a stink around the contest because he’s so popular even back then.
I enjoyed Roger Walker's interview the best. He is a very honest intelligent man. I like his quotes such as " Arnold has always been an asshole" , "He is wearing a stolen watch" etc.
@@TheSpritz0 I haven't been to a Mr Canada since 1980 ( Hamilton) but I agree the standards have been quite high and produced a lot of quality physiques with great leg development.
It is hard to believe the photos were so forgiving to Arnold, but were not forgiving to any other the other top competitors. I think it was much more lilely that the photos were the same for everyone. Arnold looked good enough to me in the photos to win. But, we will never know for sure.
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines Don't talk about evidence dickhead theirs a whole video of it here and from many other videos "From People Who Were Actually There."
However if Mentzer would had continue saying most supplements ( particularly Weider supplements) were a waste of money and worthless and in some cases harmful,.genetics was the predominant factor in bodybuilding success in combination with training and drugs, certain machines such as Nautilus were as effective or in some cases more effective than many barbell exercises, you don't need to train with as many sets and as many days per week etc and contradicting the Weider gospel I don't see how they would allow him to win once let alone 3-5. Dickerson was clever enough to stay in the Weiders good graces, not boycott the 81 Olympia so he was " awarded" the 82 Olympia although Bannout,.Viator, Zane were arguably better.
@@odessafile75 Yes, you are absolutely right. But if you'll notice Mentzer didn't rail against the Weiders until after 1980. Mike was the Weider darling up until then and probably if he would have placed 2nd to Arnold he may have been able to deal with that. and let's face it Mike insisted that his way of training was the only way and just isn't so. Look at early photos of him before Arthur Jones and Mikes physique was already championship quality. You know that Ray Mentzer trained identical to Mike and he was never an elite competitor. Getting back to my idea of Mike 's attitude, if he would have come back in 1981 and Franco won, would have looked even worse for Arnold and the Weiders. Because Franco looked far worse than Arnold.
@@lonemapper You've raised some good points. Regarding Ray not being an elite competitor he did win the Mr. America and competed in some pro shows. He actually in some ways was bigger than Mike but as he was taller did not look quite as freaky as older brother Mike. I'm unsure if he was as driven as Mike and trained as consistently. I agree that Mike Mentzer should not have let the 80 Olympia affect him so much. Coe and Dickerson kept at it and won a lot of shows including the Olympia for Dickerson. Zane still placed high in 82 and 83. I agree that Joe Weider appeared to be " fond" of Mike Mentzer for a couple of reasons and started calling some training that Mentzer did a Weider principle such as Weider Rest Pause which Mentzer actually learned from Tony Garcy.
Actually you need to be close. That’s why the judges have front row seats. Frank Zane looked nothing in real life like he did in photos. photos don’t do him justice. Wayne Demilla said in an interview he won’t comment on anyone based on photos, he needs to see them on stage.
I mean the competitors are too close and see through their eyes only. They are too close to it. The judges must be close to see the line-up. To make comparison by standing competitors next to each other to make comparisons.
Umm not sure if you paid attention to what those who were their had to say on this video and on many other video's on the same subject i might add. Or maybe your just hero worshipping.
Was Roger Walker trying to imply by saying Arnold was more “than just friends with him” referring to the guy associated with putting in the contest that they were business partners? Or something else like romantic? What was he implying?
I heard that Ken Waller, who you can see sitting on the floor next to Arnold, (a good friend of Ric Drasin's who Ric describes as an actual tough guy who loved to get into bar brawls) was going to beat the shit out of Mentzer if he had actually tried something with Arnold.
All of these guys had flaws. You can make an argument that anyone in the top six could have won. My personal favorites were Zane and Metzner. They were both in condition, although Zane was downsized. Roger Walker, Roy Calendar and some of the others were kind of overlooked.
I think Zane, Mentzer or Coe should have won. Others think Dickerson deserved victory. I thought Walker , Callender, Tinnerino and others looked great.
So for the last few days I’ve been listening to all the different interviews about the 1980 and 81 controversies. And tonight I watched the Arnold Rebuild documentary. I think he definitely won that show, I think that he was about 80% of his best, and even that was good enough to be everyone else. He dwarfed everyone and your eyes go to him every time. Especially after prejudging, he tightened up and looked even better. Just my opinion. I respect them all though. Legends
There really is no controversy. This ongoing myth really needs to die now. Controversial? Not really, big guys always have the advantage. Dorian over Ray and mostly Cutler over Dexter etc. Arnold was big and developed while the other competitors were tiny compared to him. Bigger is better in the real world. First up. The story of CBS sports, which was covering the event, had supposedly Mentzer pegged as the winner before the contest results were announced. After the contest, they pulled their crew and never aired the coverage and never covered the O again. Well that’s all a lie. The reality is there was never any statements by CBS about a fix or anything at all. No footage was broadcast because the filming crew had run out of tape. That’s all it was. They never filmed the whole thing. The story about CBS pulling because of a "fix"was conjured up by Coe and Mentzer since they were bitter losers and wanted to discredited Arnold. The story is still being kept alive by fans of Mentzer’s training philosphy who want to rewrite history, because what else do they have to hang on to? Nothing. Secondly. Mentzer was never a contender. Mentzer still would have been in 4th place even if Arnold never entered. This whole Arnold vs Mentzer thing was created years later he was never a real threat onstage. He was a footnote and nothing more. Revisionist history. He became a contender years after the fact when he had a resurgence of popularity from his HIT training system. Back in 1980 he was just a footnote now somehow he was better than Arnold. People can’t seperate their need to embellish his brief competitive record because they like HIT. So they make it seem like Arnold and Mentzer were rivals, when Arnold barely knew Mentzer existed most of the time. Arnolds only rivals were Sergio and Ferrigno. Mentzer just wasn’t worth noting as competition and no one would remember him if he hadn’t become an author of HIT books later in life. Mentzer couldn’t even beat Zane or Dickerson and they were pretty small. HIT devotees want to deify their idol though so they won’t stop claiming he was the rightful winner despite the evidence. Ludicrous. Mike Mentzer places lower than he felt and spends the rest of his ‘career’ whining about it. And another thing about Mentzer- his HIT is BS. Did he train like that? Nope. First he says train 4 days a week, then his HIT gets more minimal over the years so he can get some attention. Finally, how often did he advocate training a bodypart- once every 12 days or something? Just a pile of BS to generate money. Nothing more. As for Arnold not being at his best is he didn’t need to be. He didn’t have to be at his best. Do you know why Arnold risked his legacy to compete one more time? Because it was a WEAK line-up. All the major contenders were gone like Sergio, Ferrigno and Nubret and all Arnold had to do was beat a bunch of B-Listers who were half his size. None of them could be a dominate Mr Olympia they were just keeping the seat warm until a guy like Haney showed up. Zane beat Mentzer at the 79 Olympia but both guys were pretty small, and in 1980 Mentzer finished a distant 5th while Zane got 3rd. There were a lot of guys in the contest but they were all B-list or C-list in some cases so stacked doesn’t mean much at all just a lot of filler. Now if an A-list guy like Sergio had of competed Arnold may not of entered. Only Samir had the potential and drive but he finished 15th in 1980. So yeah full but weak line-up at this contest. The big guys had moved on, and the second tier guys were left or do you really think a small guy like Dickerson could have beat Sergio? Nope. Between the Arnold and Haney years was the rise of the smaller, skinnier Olympians who put more emphasis on conditioning rather than mass. Anyway Zane was way off, Dickerson was too small and Samir was a long way from achieving his potential so none them posed a significant threat to Arnold which is why he entered and won. And finally, people tend to believe what other people tell them about the 1980 contest, that is until they get to see the actual evidence for themselves and realise it was really was much ado about nothing. For some people it can be quite a surprise to realise that the judging wasn’t some great scandalous betrayal of everything that was good and holy like Mentzer constantly claimed in his articles up until death finally let him get over it. It’s funny how people always say how Arnold’s prestige affected the results, when all this “controversy” is due to Mentzer’s constant crying about the result! It was MENTZER who has created a hype around himself! He didn’t like Arnold’s training style, so he didn’t like Arnold. Mike just could not stop acting like a little child, very bad sport.

@@goldenera4ever Rewatch this video again and take note of what is said about the photos not doing any justice to how bad arnold looked. Besides you cannot judge any bodybuilding show by photo's alone. When Dorian Yates won his first few olympia's someone wrote into musclemag (back in the early 90's) that looking at the pictures of him he does not look that much better then the other top contenders like Paul Dillet, Vince Taylor, Shawn Ray, Lee Labrada. The reporter responded that the photo's didn't do justice to how huge Dorain was when you saw him for real, his muscle thickness at the time was unsurpassed and those that saw him for real (Jay Cutler stated exactly the same) were left in know doubt at this point in Dorian Yates career how far ahead of the competition he was. The same is true for arnold at the 1980 olympia but at the opposite side of the spectrum, i knew 3 guys who travelled up to sydney to watch this show (can hardly call it a contest) and they all said arnold looked terrible and should not have competed. Also the major point to all this is that Bill Pearl resigned from the judging because like it is stated here and elsewhere he knew the decision was already decided who was going to win and he wanted nothing to do with this circus and when asked some time after the show where would he have placed arnold, Bill responded certainly not first. Arnold himself stated years latter that it was a mistake upon his behalf for entering the event, why would he say such a thing if he won fairly and their was no rigging of the results and he had not cheated. Besides that many people do not boo without reason and the reason was obvious to all who were their arnold screw you freedoms cheated.
There actually is a separate interview with Roy Duval, but it's only on audio, no video. Go on Google and type in Roy Duval bodybuilder, then scroll down a little and you'll see Season 5, Episode 8 and there you go!
Arnold was not his best but he still won and proved boyer and Mike that they did not move forward. Arnold at his worst was still the best. All boyer had was calves and bicep peaks. Mike looked like a brick and chris never looked that great even when he won (possible the worst olympia ever). The only one that was close to Arnold was frank. Roger walker can suck one off 😅
In a line-up you see why Arnold pulled it off. If you saw him face to face it is different. The point is Arnold is confident up front and nervous back stage. He knew the cortisone shot was bearing on his condition and the water had to be released. Arnold wrote he flexed and strained to get the water out. It left him drawn out and smaller. But Zane was not massive so he went for cuts. Arnold won and that is that. 1981 was a fiasco compared to 1980. And muscle memory made Arnold close in 8 weeks.
I couldn't disagree more looking at the footage Arnold dwarfs everyone even at his lighter bodyweight . Mike's arms and upper body looks tiny Vs Arnold.
3 words condition, condition, condition in terms of condition, Arnold looked like shit compared to most of the other competitors, and by 1980, conditioning was EXTREMELY important, If you don't think that's true, look at Zane in 1977, 78 and 79, the previous 3 years, each of which he won, based on largely, but not completely, his phenomenal condition. Arnold's 'win' in 1980 was absolute bullshit and obviously, to everyone other than the most hardcore Arnold fangirl, was a fix.
It's NOT about who is "the biggest", it is about who looks both conditioning and development... Chris Dickerson, Boyer Coe, Roger Walker, and Mike Mentzer all had the WINNING look that night, Arnold looked "off"...
Pay attention to what was said about how the photographs didn't do justice to actually how bad arnold actually looked by those who were actually their. And that many people do not boo without a reason.
@@smattgoss I knew 3 guys from the local gym down here in Australia who travelled to sydney to watch the show and upon their return they said arnold looked terrible and should not have been their, and this was coming from before the show arnold fans. I was 10 years old at the time and remember them saying how the whole place went quite when Mike Mentzer was placed 5th until someone a few rows in front yelled out bullshit! Then as arnold was announced the winner the whole audience erupted into booing. That many people do not boo without a reason or maybe you think the audience all had a bad case of being bitter as well hmmm. Now with all the information here and in other videos from those who were their and none of the other competitors saying that they should have won but instead all of them naming others who were in better shape then arnold and could easily be placed the winner, and this is the big point here, Bill Pearl quitting the judging panel as he stated he knew the show (carn't call it a contest) was already fixed and decided and he wanted know part of the circus. (i notice none of the arnold fans defending him here can say anything against that fact) Bill was asked some time after the event if he had been judging where would he have placed arnold? He responded with certainly not first. But i guess this sort of information is rather hard to take for some when their hero who by all accounts with the facts and information presented had cheated. Commonsense logic and LISTENING to the facts from those who were there and not just from other competitors seems to go out the window when the person they hero worship for what ever reason is shown to be not the pillar of inspiration and perfection that they had believed or deluded themselves to be.
Notice that they never said they looked the best and that they should have won. They all said roughly from second to sixth were the obvious winners and that arnold around sixth. Also Bill Pearl resigning as judge and what he stated was going to happen, seems pretty conclusive that the show was not going to be a contest dosen't it. And that many people do not boo without a reason...do they.
Boyer Coe is wrong. Arnold still was the biggest ,with the best arms, chest and shoulders. All the other competitors had smaller frames and did not look as impressive. Look closely at pictures. The other men being shorter with smaller bone structure didn't help. Plus , by night show and all that posing , Arnold looked harder.
Boyer Coe is a very honest and highly intelligent man. I had the honour of meeting him when he guest posed at the Mr. Can Am in Watertown, NY in the late 70s/ early 80s. He tells it like it is. Arnold may have had the best biceps but he did not have the best arms . Boyer has incredible arms as well as others. Several competitors had far superior forearms and triceps including Mentzer, Coe et al. Arnold did have his great chest but others also had very well developed chest. He did not have the best shoulders. Dennis Tinnerino et al had better shoulders. Several of the competitors relative to their height and bone structure were much thicker than Arnold. Almost every competitor including Samir and Padilla who placed very low looked better than Arnold.
@@smattgoss Boyer Coe inherited some rather unusual genetic characteristics in which it appears he only had 1 or slightly more set of abdominals showing and apparently he trained his abs very hard but did not have the number rows of rectus abdominals that most of us have. Another poster once commented that he had noted that 1 or more Louisiana bodybuilders had a similar look. Boyer is what is known as a Cajun which means he is among people who had some French Spanish backgrounds . I'm unsure if they are related to Acadians who were of French Canadian background who migrated to Louisiana when it was a territory of France. No matter what ab exercise Boyer did or how hard he trained he never developed abs like Zane, Teufel ( deceased) Tinnerino ( deceased) etc. I would categorize Casey Viator as a Cajun with a very distinct look although he has abs similar to most bodybuilders in terms of rows of rectus abdominus. Or perhaps they are buried in the torso ( not visable) but I'm not a kinesiologist so I'm unsure how to accurately describe. Coe did have quite a small and lean waist line. If nature denied Coe great abs he was super compensated with absolutely incredible arms, calves and other body parts. I'm of the opinion that Coe looked absolutely incredible at the 80 Olympia. This opinion was shared by many others include Bill Pearl. Even Frank Zane commented that Mentzer looked good and Coe looked very good. Several of the competitors as well as many of the fans in attendance would have accepted Coe, Mentzer, Dickerson or Zane as the winner although some would be of the opinion that Zane was too small. So no Coe is not bitter he simply told it as it is. Regarding Mike Mentzer those who opine that he was no good, small etc are among the people who never met him, saw him guest pose, train or compete. He looked like Hercules.
If I was a judge I'd have 1. Mentzer 2. Coe 3. Zane 4. Walker 5. Dickerson 6. Callendar 7. Arnold
Arnold should of been at least 6th! He was deformed and had no legs
You're insane.
Boyer is missing too much and has weird or no aesthetic quality.
I cannot get enough of the 1980 and 1981 Olympia. Thanks for the great content, John!
Thank you for watching Brian
Amazingly entertaining compilation. I'm particularly impressed by Boyer Coe and Roger Walker. Both tough guys with integrity.
He says
" Remember the golden rule."
" He who has the gold makes the rules"
Such an incredibly smart and pithy way of expressing the truth of the competition. At the time of watching the film I was unaware of the controversy and new to bodybuilding. That one line delivered by Tinerino sums up the entire show.
He would have made a great interviewee.
This is such an important video. Keep up the good work John.
'It doesnt matter what country you're from. Everyone can smell bullshit' great quote from Roger Walker at the end. Appreciate his straight talking.

By the sounds of it arnold was prepared to fully emerse himself amongst the filth and shit of society and do whatever it takes.
Fantastic! Thanks, John.

I remember reading a few years ago that Arnold has said he regretted competing in 1980 and it was mistake on his part.
Arnold was not at his best. Maybe 80 percent of his best. But enough to win against the other 16 who competed that day in 1980 in Sydney, Australia.
Arnold also said that after awhile he will have his Olympia win number 7 and that will be all that matters. He had a drawn face or death face. Cheeks were drawn.
@@jeffreylocke8808 i thought the same until i saw the backshots. Arnold was nowhere near as good as Mentzer or Dickersen from the back.

Chris Dickerson's memory of that night must be fading, as per the witnesses- "Among the competing bodybuilders Chris Dickerson, who finished 2nd ran out of the theater when the contest ended and “disappeared into the night.” Reasoning behind this is that he was not expected to place so high; maybe he feared retaliation."
arnold did not deserve to win.
mri80 and 81 have been a joke to fairness

This is amazing ! Great intel ! Like a police lineup 😝. You can basically infer the actual winners and they all say it !
I would have paid to see Arnold and Mike come to blows, would make great drama :)
Arnold watching this: " yeah, but i had a vision, i had a goal. "
For several years in a row, the O was won by men with relatively small legs. But at that time,
Arnold was bigger than the sport.
It seems Zane allowed his thighs to shrink a bit from the mid 70s to early 80s.
odessafile75
He did it on purpose. His thighs were his fastest-growing body part. He actually stopped doing heavy squats. Unlike some bodybuilders known for one or two freaky body parts ( Tom Platz) he was smart and kept everything in perfect proportion.
@@kurtvonfricken6829 Agreed!

Still waiting.......
Lot of words, but lacking in reality.
Zane was peeled to the bone...
Chris Dickerson looks like a completely different person.
81 ...where a guy with 1 leg wins best comment of all these champions
Franco winning the 81 Mr O was a much bigger farce than Arnold at the 1980 show. In 1981 Franco's legs would have been poor even for local level show.
@@shack7631 I can add even if he was competing here in the Mr. Canada he would have been laughed off stage, legs are judged here strictly!!

put Chris Dickersons mind set in Mentzers head and Mike would have won 3 to 5 Olympia's
VERY accurate reply, I've thought that many times...

When you are looking in comparison Arnold looks like he should win. If you are just walking around you cannot judge well. You are too close to it.
If Frank Zane said that to Arnold winning his 3rd Olympia in 1979 shows what an utter chump he is
I heard that Ken Waller, who you can see sitting on the floor next to Arnold, (a good friend of Ric Drasin's who Ric describes as an actual tough guy who loved to get into bar brawls) was going to beat the shit out of Mentzer if he had actually tried something with Arnold.
he was a a gay arnie fan 😁
Ken Waller was dead last at that contest. Lol!
I have zero respect for the IFBB. How many MrOs have been rigged? Arnold and the Weiders, I have no words.
They should cut and make that film

bannout looked so incredible in that 83' olympia. one of my favorites. and i still say ahnoold was best at the '80.
I can finally tell Boyer is wearing a toupee
We can tell that Arnold had work done on his face
@@lateralus2199 ok
Roger Walker was jaded and looked like a spurned person. Arnold was good enough to win. Franco was not.
Yeah cause you were there to judge right
Hero worshipping are we?
So for the last few days I’ve been listening to all the different interviews about the 1980 and 81 controversies. And tonight I watched the Arnold Rebuild documentary. I think he definitely won that show, I think that he was about 80% of his best, and even that was good enough to be everyone else. He dwarfed everyone and your eyes go to him every time. Especially after prejudging, he tightened up and looked even better. Just my opinion. I respect them all though. Legends
Arnold looked the best to me on this vid!

Samir is so passive. He never talked shit about Arnold
Yes he did in a interview and stated Arnold was his not his best and shouldn't won !

Arnold is Arnold!!!Its all!!!
Awesome compilation of interviews. Roger Walker is so bitter that Arnold, at his worst, was better than Roger at his best.
Not bitter just telling the truth which happens to be the same as everyone else's opinion on this video and on others about the same topic.
And to state otherwise especially from those who were not there just seems...well stupid!
@@shaundouglas2057 you are so right...everyone has an opinion.
@@goldenera4ever I"ll take the opinion from those who their over those who were not. Anything else would be rather stupid wouldn't you agree?
@@shaundouglas2057 you can still compare two bodies that are in the same photo. Of all the ones I've seen with Arnold and Roger, Arnold at his worst still beats him.
Arnold was head and shoulders taller and he won fair and square. His structure was such that his muscles grew bigger when he flexed.
is there a separate interview with Roy Duval ?
Yes, Roy Duval was among the competitors John interviewed. He was the guy with the British accent other than Roger Walker ( British/ Australian)
@@odessafile75 i know but wheres the chat prior to talking about the 80 Olympia
@@petechumly985 Oh, the only Roy Duval interview was the one discuss ing the 80 Olympia. I don't know of any other interview.
There actually is a separate interview with Roy Duval, but it's only on audio, no video. Go on Google and type in Roy Duval bodybuilder, then scroll down a little and you'll see Season 5, Episode 8 and there you go!
Must have killed these guys to see Arnold go on and become one of the most famous men ever.
Carisma wins over muscle size
Lol wut
No Charisma, but arrogance acknowledgement that he knew he was going to win because it was rigged
Of course the ppl that competed are gonna say Arnold should of got 6th lmao. Cus he beat them all 😂
Because the show was set for him to win
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines Uh does what Bill Pearl had stated about this circus ring any bells, how stupid do you want to get?
I couldn't disagree more looking at the footage Arnold dwarfs everyone even at his lighter bodyweight . Mike's arms and upper body looks tiny Vs Arnold.
3 words
condition, condition, condition
in terms of condition, Arnold looked like shit compared to most of the other competitors, and by 1980, conditioning was EXTREMELY important, If you don't think that's true, look at Zane in 1977, 78 and 79, the previous 3 years, each of which he won, based on largely, but not completely, his phenomenal condition.
@@shaundouglas2057 pics from that era don't lie . Some very bitter men you are listening to. No photo shop in 1980
@@smattgoss I knew 3 guys from the local gym down here in Australia who travelled to sydney to watch the show and upon their return they said arnold looked terrible and should not have been their, and this was coming from before the show arnold fans.
Mentzer was by far the most complete with the overall package. Dickerson , torn pec, torn bicep, tiny thighs.
Dickerson's thighs were far from tiny. They actually were quite developed.
Look closer
@@odessafile75 Yep, he had the best legs in the show. Dude must be blind.
Tiny????? Chris was known for his lower body. Quit smoking.
Can always rely on bodybuilders who lost to be objective in their views...😅😅
Yes ,but they did not say they should have won only that Arnold did not deserve victory.
odessafile75
That’s the key....
I do agree that Arnold's upper body was still decent but the legs were small so therefore he did not deserve to win in my opinion.
Correct no abs Boyer still bitter menzter never had a good body at all
@@smattgoss Boyer Coe inherited some rather unusual genetic characteristics in which it appears he only had 1 or slightly more set of abdominals showing and apparently he trained his abs very hard but did not have the number rows of rectus abdominals that most of us have.
