Photographing Popular Locations ...

  • There are lots of popular photography locations in every single country in the world ... and if you research any of those locations with photography in mind, you will easily find them. But why bother going to them at all? Well there are a few advantages as well as a couple of disadvantages and funnily enough, that's what I am talking about today.
    I suppose you could called this a landscape photography vlog ... but I prefer on location landscape photography!

    You mentioned hearing your favorite song on the radio or learning to play a favorite song…. This video reminded me of a wonderful movie that I saw years ago. Patience is not a virtue I posses unfortunately. There have been a number of times I have regretted moving on. As far as who I take pictures for, it is definitely for myself. My family often gets annoyed that I don't share my shots, and I also do not partake in any social media. I agree with your statement about not caring what others think. Photography is my escape from the day to day pressures of life. Great video as always, cheers.

    I really like that you include “bad” shots as well as those that work. It would also be good to see the final shots pre and post edit. Coming from a 35mm background it is the editing that always causes me the biggest headache. I either never get round to it or when I do, never know how much to do! Thanks for the content, keep up the good work.

      I know what you mean. There have been a few times where I've been to locations and just not bothered photographing them.
      A prime example was when visiting NZ. We were at the Wanaka tree ... There were about 5 people huddled around it taking various shots ... I stayed in the flanks and ended up getting a nice shot of the milky way over the town instead ... Always shots to be had!

    I got blessed with the only 10 minutes of sunlight of that entire day for waiting another 30 minutes XD

    I live in Southern Ca, which means I am close to some stunning landscapes. A photographer friend invited me to a camera club trip last March. The club leader had carefully mapped out key locations in Utah (Arches Nat’l Park and Canyonlands Nat’l Park) and calculated the ideal position of the sun for each. He made a pdf of where we would be and when.
    Great.

 All we had to do was get up at 4 a.m and hike in the dark to a spot so we could shoot in the golden hour.. Where my friend and others in the club and I differ is retaking the same photograph hundreds of people have taken of these landmarks. I don’t want to copy something that’s been on dozens of calendars.

 So I look for compositions that differ, screw public opinion. In one place, I concentrated on photographing the crowds of photographers as they shot.

    Living as I do 30 minutes from various SoCal beaches, I have the most fun shooting seascapes in winter when the lowest tides coincide with sunset, exposing vast “wet sand mirrors” that reflect colorful and interesting skies. Same beach, same spot-and the images are never the same.
    If you ever come this way (Ventura County), let me know and I'll share some intel.

      @mikesphotography  Рік тому

      Thanks very much Jim ... and when I do make it over there, I'll be sure to get in touch!
      I have been to quite a few locations where I have not even got my camera out because it has been so busy ... other times, I have taken a similar shot to what you were going for where it is more about the people than the scene ...
      It is all about making the shot your own ... and those personal shots are about reminding you of how you felt when you were there ... I sometimes look back through my photos and it really does take me back to that feeling I had when I was there.
      As always thanks for watching 😁👍

    I never were to a popular photography location, except maybe Frognerparken Park in Oslo, but not really landscape photography. Will drive around Helgøya Island in Lake Mjøsa at Sunday, as I've to go to Hamar anyway, but the forecast is gloomy. But maybe I find some good compositions for another time?
    Love the upcoming EOS R6II by the way, but wait for the a7V.

    Depends if it’s my first time or not at a location. If it’s my first, I’ll bite the bullet and keep on walking after I find nice compositions. Like you said, there may be more opportunities than all the popular shots others have taken. Then I’d return either on my way back through and pray for good lighting, or try and come back again for the specific shots I was found. No matter what I do, though.. I always feel that I’m missing out on something! Haha. 😅 You do very well with your patience. At least it seems. 👏 Great stuff, dude! Love your gentle reminders throughout.

    A matter of degree, IMO. At one extreme is the tourist bus load syndrome - lots of folks jump out and grab an “I was here” shot, or “Look what I replicated” image. Might as well buy a postcard. Tougher “popular” venues can better develop shooting skills and composition “chops”. My sense is that most people would not appreciate my own personal interpretive rendering - saying, instead “Oh, that’s such and such mountain”.
    No, I tend not to be patient enough. Perhaps I’d be more patient if I had a bigger portfolio of good stuff to lean back on.
    BTW, pic in pic effect works very well, Mike. Description gear roster excludes A74 (picky, picky😊). Cheers!

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Рік тому +1

      That is true, nothing worse than being at a location and as soon as you get there, a tourist bus turns up and hundreds of selfie grabbers see you and think you must be in the best spot and hoard around you and your camera! 😆🙈
      My Aunt actually goes and photographs postcards with her phone and then puts them up on facebook ... everyone thinks she's an awesome photographer!! ... for the record she is on my wife's side of the family, otherwise I'd be having a stern word with her!! 😆😆
      Great to hear the pic in pic effect works well ... that's due to the A74 having the stabilisation built in helping me get smoother shots I'm happy to put in my videos!
      And thanks for the heads up about the A74 not being in the description links ... completely forgot to change out the A7iii! 😆

    Great video, Mike. I know the light did not cooperate with you, but I still thought the photos you got looked really nice. I love going to places to try and recreate photos that I have seen. The reason we see them is because they are usually taken in fantastic places. Back when I was just using my iPhone for photography, I hiked up a mountain at 3AM in Lake Bled for a fantastic view of the lake, town and castle. It remains one of my favorite photos and I absolutely loved recreating a photo that I had dreamed of seeing with my own eyes for many years. I hope all is well with you and your bride. Have a wonderful weekend.
