  • Today I talk about the two things you need to become a landscape photographer. ... now obviously you need more than these two, but if you have a camera and then these two things ... you'll be on your way to getting some great photographs.
    I suppose you could called this a landscape photography vlog ... but I prefer on location landscape photography!

    Well, I giggled when you admitted the '2 things' so early on - but your delivery and follow-on was amazing. You made me realize that the sunrise shots from the last few years that I've been happiest about were on mornings where I got those 2 things right. Thank you. Great opening by the way - you totally owned that one!

      Haha! Thanks so much Bradley ... I couldn't keep it a secret for the whole video ... that would have been cruel!! 😆
      That's great to hear! It very much is about those times of sheer joy when out shooting ... sometimes it doesn't quite work out, but when it all comes together, it is so well worth it!
      Thanks for watching 😁👍

    The best light often happens at the edges of storm systems, if the forecast looks changeable that can be a good time go out if you don't mind getting soaked. I mostly go out in the mornings to catch the mist and fog.

      Nice!! It's a high risk high reward process isn't it ... I love it when the weather is super changeable ... like you said, if you don't mind getting soaked, you can get some cracking photos!!

    A fiver... It didn't take long for the Wales to come back to you. I have always been an early riser, so sunrise photography is where it is at for me. Sunset is fine, but all the looks I get being in my pajamas just isn't worth it. Really great photos, Mike. I hope you and yours have a great weekend!

      Haha!! Next I'll be saying "Boy'yo" and "shomay" 😆
      I have to be honest, I am the same. I have no problem in getting up super early ... I'll even stay up all night if it looks like a good sunrise ... but then the Long Haired General gets angry when I get sleepy for the next few nights. 😆😆
      Lol ... now that would be funny heading to a location in PJs!! 😆😆😆
      All good here dude! Got my first 1-2-1 workshop next week so really looking forward to that!!
      I hope you and the family are great!!

    Thanks for another great video. It’s certainly easier to create great images with good light and you need the motivation to get out early or stay out late. For me, motivation to become a better photographer not only gets me out of bed but also drives me to seek the advice of others. For example, I learned in one of your street photography videos to keep the shutter speed at 1/200 of a second or better to eliminate camera shake. I applied that tip during a recent trip to Paris and was pleasantly surprised to see how sharp my images were. Also, less concern on the technical details allowed me to focus on composition so there was a multiplier effect on image quality. Just one simple piece of advice led to a massive upgrade in results. You’ve had a big impact on my development as a photographer and I appreciate it.

      @mikesphotography  Рік тому

      That's so great to hear Dan and it really motivates me to keep making these videos!!
      Like what you said, if you can focus less on the technical aspect, it really does get your brain working in other ways!
      As always, thanks for watching 😁👍

    Another great video sir. I don't mind hitting the "Tourist spots" photos. I see what is posted on social media/travel media and when I'm there look to see how I can make it mine. Angles, time of day, and season may have been played out on a site by a bazillion people. So I think of what I can add. An overlook or peak and adding some trekking poles in the shot may be all it takes. A sun behind me lighting up a view but including my shadow(or my wife) give it a little personality. I never try to compete with shots that are out there since 1. I may not have the right lens/camera or 2. my time there (many times it is a family vacation) is not the best time/lighting.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Рік тому

    Such a true video, but for me its the afternoon light that I prefer. Why? Well, after years of getting up early for work (04:00am starts) and now that I am semi retired the thought of getting up at silly o'clock to take photographs just doesn't appeal, maybe that's why nowadays I like winter so much, lol!! For me catching a sunset is much more appetising, its that afternoon light, rolling into golden hour watching that setting sun that I really enjoy, then there's that post sunset light as we head to blue hour, maybe even catch a moonrise if i'm lucky. But, and this is possibly the most important factor, if Mother Nature doesn't play ball and let the light do its thing then I can always go to the pub for a pint, you can't do that at 05:00am :)

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Рік тому

      Haha! That's a very good point Martin, drinking before 11am is kind of frowned upon these days...😆 ... Although it's always 5oclock somewhere!! 🤔
      I'm sure in a few years time, I'll think along the same lines.

    Good story-telling aspect to this vid, Mike, including at home preparation scenes - nice. Perhaps its just me, but I seem to detect a better video quality to this post (clearer, perhaps sharper than usual). Something different?
    Sound advice. Skills plus motivation , preparation and opportunity = better odds of getting fine images.
    Out of place for “digital guy” like you to use “retro” alarm clock😂 - but still works when power is out.
    Some folks are just not morning people; for them, perhaps sunsets and night shoots would be better. Same alarm clock, different setting😊. Cheers!

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Рік тому +2

      Haha! The retro clock had a lot of screen time in this one!! 😆
      Thanks very much dude, I spent a lot of time on this script and great to hear it all came together and made sense ... It did take about three goes to get it all though ... a few aborted missions when the sunlight didn't make an appearance ...
      You're right about some not being morning people, and they can keep away from the mornings so it is quieter ... for me!! 😆😆😆
      As always thanks for watching 😁👍

    Clever thoughts. Plus very entertaining video. Thanks a lot.
    What I’m still struggling with is how to manage getting up at sunrise and going out at sunset when you are a parent having young children. Because basically children needs parents at sun rise/set.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Рік тому +1

      Thanks very much Gabriel, great to hear it was entertaining ... I'm working on the entertainment side of my videos to make them more fun to watch, instead of boring tutorials (although tutorials do have their place).
      I know what you mean ... I don't have children so I don't have that problem, but my brother has two and he doesn't get a minute to himself!
      I suppose it's about grabbing those moments when you can ... Waterfall photography is a great one to get into if you can't wait for the weather to be good ... I got absolutely soaked today, but got some great images of a little stream.
      Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing your problems ... although in no time, they will be all grown up and you'll have your mornings back 😁👍

    I went to chrome hill a couple of days ago. I live 2 hrs away from there so had to get up at 3:30. I had the whole place to myself that morning....well just me and the sheep. Beautiful morning. Massively overexposed all my sunrise shots doing a timelapse.....nevermind. Enjoyed it all the same.

    I watch this while snoozing for the 4th time.
    Also, you forgot the absolutely most important thing: owning a car. Unless you live in the landscape you want to shoot, there is no public transport that will get you to your location. Much less at 4 a.m.

      If you don't own a car, the best thing to do is to arrange a trip somewhere, or take a workshop ... then you'll be able to get to those locations ...and on a workshop, they will drive you to all the best locations!! 😆
