Joel is one of the best drummers out there. A real musician too thanks for the interview!

A compilation of Joel's works would make for a killer book. It's all there....just needs to be placed into book form.

Joel is an awesome drummer... I was lucky enough to meet him and see a lot of the really amazing concepts he uses. He's amazing! Good to see you!

Joel has always been one of the kindest and most inclusive guys I have met in the business. He is totally immersed in his craft and "feels" the music. Thus he is integrated in the music and with all players. Our role as a drummer is variable as we can play with others by duplicating their parts or we can be the "response" to their "call". Drum hooks are fun to invent if the song needs some character......and all songs need some kind of musical "hooks" wherever it may come from. Being a composer helps being a drummer.

Incredible that he is under rated right> I mean not by musicians but by the drumming community. I just don't get it. He is a monster player!

10:00’minutes in.. I would describe that as being sentient and creating stream of consciousness real time along with others doing that. Being present not in body, but audibly focusing only on what your band members are doing musically and reacting real time. That is an experience that some never get to enjoy.

Spot on man! It's another level of music that the average person now has no connection to at ALL! Kind of sad actually. But yes we have the luck to have that in our lives

Great interview Phil! I can say amen to all that Joel said about being a musician vs a drummer. Most of the gigs I've done had no charts, just a UA-cam link to the song, so I developed my own way of creating notes, (a limited form of chart), about each song as to the basic elements of the tune. Time signature, tempo, feel (a way to interpret the song), maybe the basic bass drum pattern, and tools to use : brushes, sticks, or mallets. Every tune had to be adjusted to fit the band's lineup, such as no bass player for this gig. I had to fill in the bottom end when there wasn't a bass player.

Saw this guy in India playing with yanni at the Taj Mahal. . His fillls were crazy good. The dude played with Alan Holsworth. I love that Alan used to use the Yamaha DG series amplifiers.

PS Even Billy Cobham mentioned that he felt like he left his body when the music was off the chain, like he was watching himself play while he was in the moment. Phil perhaps you can do a series on "the art of listening" for drummers? Being a good listener is the most important skill to me.

That stuff is super deep and talked about by all musicians who have a very strong connection to music. It's the old world...something innate about being a human being.

Good interview. To say Joel isn't f*cking around is an understatement: ua-cam.com/video/yJMCfM27ou4/v-deo.html
