    Fun fact: the creator of Little Witch Academia (Yoh Yoshinari) is a My Little Pony fan. He was really into G4 when it was airing in the early ’10s and drew fanart of the characters. He also used some of the ponies designs for his own witch characters, like Sucy having Fluttershy’s hairstyle or Diana’s hair resembling Sunset Shimmer’s (human). Plus in the background of the specials and series (as little Easter eggs) you can see pony figurines, with one blatantly looking like Rarity.

    I adore everything about LWA. The animation is gorgeous, as expected by Studio Trigger, and every moment fills me with wonder and excitement. The magic present in the show is somehow both easy to understand but also unexplainable. It really feels like a true magical world. Akko is also a delight, as well as pretty much every character

    One thing that becomes clear in the TV series is that the secondary theme is magic=animation (and a lot of the easter eggs are western). Diana's room mates are Hanna and Barbara (Hana-Barbara, MGM's top animators, and later studio founders), the extra girl with them at the "bus stop" is Avery (as in "Tex" Avery) and HER room mates are named Mary and Blair (Mary Blair, famous Disney designer from the 50s, most noted for doing most of the design of Disney's Alice in Wonderland). Plus there are the legendary Nine old Witches (the "Nine old men", were Disney core animators well into the 80s).
    The original story was a Government-sponsored internship program (giving in-betweeners a chance to key animate and direct). It was such a success, they launched a kick-starter shortly afterwards for a sequel and blew the roof off in record time. What WAS notable, was that a large majority of the funding came in from abroad (thus Enchanted Parade leans into the international scope of the cast).

    1:57 Well, yes and no. The show actually aired on TV in Japan but when it came to the English release Netflix acquired the license. It like how Komi Can't Communicate is listed as a Netflix Original Anime but it technically also aired on TV in Japan. On Netflix you'd be surprised at the small amount of anime that actually are Netflix Originals compared to one that are listed as such but in actuality aired on TV in Japan.
    Anyway other than that, I love this show and it was how I became fascinated with Studio Trigger. I even own a Nendoroid of Akko.

    • @willpina

      They're Netflix originals because Netflix was a producer, not because they're exclusive to Netflix. Same as Crunchyroll.

    Fun fact the short was part of Young Animator Training Project which is an annual project launched in 2010, and funded by the Japanese government's Agency for Cultural Affairs in order to support training animators.

    This show always makes me so emotional. The believing in yourself message is so nice :'''). I wouldn't mind a reaction series for LWA!! I feel it feats the theme of the channel (even though I don't consider this to be a magical girl show, but it has all the vibes)

    Another great show... the cards used to be available, released with Japan's blurays, but are now too expensive to collect!

      @heinrichagrippa5681 11 місяців тому +2

      You were "younger" in 2017? I mean, technically everyone was, but I'm assuming you mean younger as in childhood, in which case... wow, I mean, clearly that means you're really young, but I still can't help but read that and feel really old.

    • @usami_ichika
      @usami_ichika 11 місяців тому +1

      @@heinrichagrippa5681 Oh noo don't feel that way! I'm not a child haha, I just meant younger as in this was a while back. Also it blows my mind that 2017 was 6 years ago 😭. It feels just like yesterday, but yeah I can't help every day thinking of how much older I'm feeling 🥲. We keep on troopin' tho, life's still got a long way to go!

    • @heinrichagrippa5681
      @heinrichagrippa5681 11 місяців тому +2

      @@usami_ichika Don't worry - it's just me pointlessly griping. Yeah, 2017 does seem remarkably recent. Actually, even being 17 seems sort-of-but-not-quite all that long ago, until I remind myself that 17 was 17 years ago. Your original comment is in that weird liminal space where I see some of it if I click the notification thing, but cuts off at _"I'm actually glad more people older than me are still enjoying these ..."_ Though if I click on it, it switches to the above comment as it is currently. I actually liked where that original comment seemed to be going.
      Anyway, even if you weren’t thinking it, there’s a non-creepy reason why I - a guy beginning to have a few grey hairs appearing - occasionally feels drawn to the mahou shoujo genre. In Canada, _Sailor Moon_ took off significantly stronger than it did in the US. So, when it began airing - just a couple weeks after I had turned 6 - early in the morning before school, it happened to be the coolest thing on TV, and had a distinct aesthetic that was memorable and totally different from anything else (most likely because it stood out as pretty much the _only_ locally broadcast anime at the time). So, the usual: the things you imprint on in your formative years and all that. In a somewhat turbulent and frustrating early childhood, it was something I could really immerse myself in and enjoy. So now, even though mahou shoujo series probably represent less than 4% of the visual media I currently consume, my brain seems permanently hardwired to subconsciously associate the genre with those feelings of comfort and early-childhood wonder.
      Wow, I’m not sure why I suddenly felt the need to give a bunch of unsolicited oversharing like that. Perhaps because _“[...] people older than me are still enjoying these..."_ cutting off made me wonder what exactly the rest was going to say, which for some reason made me feel prompted to say something on that topic.

    • @usami_ichika
      @usami_ichika 11 місяців тому +1

      @@heinrichagrippa5681 ohh haha I deleted that part because I realized it probably wasn't best to assume other ppls age ;-;. But yeah I do think that it's a good thing tennagers & adults are into Maho Shoujo! I got into it during my early teenage years so I didn't really get to experience it in my childhood, but it's always had a positive impact on my life and I'm glad that seems to be the case for you too!
      Also I was a girl who grew up with battle shonen and "boys" cartoons so I can definitely relate to you on that aspect! Magical girls can be a safe space for anyone and it's great that you found it to be yours just as I found it to be mine! It definitely doesn't come off as creepy, but actually very relatable in a way lol.
      Edit: Also basically what my original comment was going to say was something like this "Although I'm actually glad more people older than me are still enjoying things like these. Most people would only expect kids to be watching these types of shows, but it's only when you're older that you can really comprehend all the deep meanings incorporated through series. It's also kind of comforting, in a sense that people are finding their inner child instead of hiding them away."

    • @heinrichagrippa5681
      @heinrichagrippa5681 11 місяців тому +1

      @@usami_ichika That’s a funny coincidence, we kind of had opposite trajectories in that regard. I got into mahou shoujo (or I guess, more specifically, _a_ mahou shoujo anime) very young, but only ended up watching any battle/fighting shounen much later. When I was in my mid-teens, my significantly younger brother became obsessed with Dragon Ball and wouldn’t ever shut up about it. But after hearing him talk about it so much, I started remembering names of characters despite having no idea what they even looked like, which gradually made me curious. It took about two years, but I eventually caved and binged Dragon Ball and then DBZ. It had its moments of excitement, though typically short and interspersed between really, _really_ drawn out periods of almost nothing happening. I didn’t dislike it - I saw it through all the way to the end of all 8 billion episodes or so after all - but I think I missed that window between the ages of about 5-10 when it would have really clicked and become something cherished.
      Going into it at 17 with zero nostalgia was different. In any case, its padded and redundant exposition meant I didn’t need to be paying 100% attention to follow what was happening, which turned out to be an advantage as it allowed me to put it on while doing the one thing it was good at motivating me to do: lift weights. As for the other shounen classics that I never got around to, like Naruto and One Piece, no matter how much praise people I’ve met give them, I always just look at the number of episodes and go “um… you’re kidding, right?”
      In my case, starting with mahou shoujo was kind of incidental, as that was all there was (and also happened to be one that had at least one fight per episode, which helped appeal to my little boy brain). As for you, was starting with battle shounen something that happened on its own, or due to older male siblings? Either way, It’s nice to see you find comfort and a level of emotional catharsis in mahou shoujo series as well.
      Also, I’m glad you said it, because I think you’re right about there being certain things you appreciate and understand more as you get older. Not to say all shounen are just guys who are only ever happy, sad, angry, and other basic emotions, but overall shoujo series _tend_ to be more nuanced and explore the more complex thoughts and conflicting feelings of characters and their complicated interpersonal relationships.
      I’m pretty sure that’s why the late Kentaro Miura called Berserk “more of a shoujo”. At first glance, a hyper-violent, dark medieval fantasy - where the protagonist is an edgy, brooding, one-eyed, battle-scarred, large muscle-bound man known for wielding an unrealistically humongous sword - sounds intuitively like the polar-opposite of the girly, bright-eyed, slender-limbed, pink aesthetic one normally thinks of when they hear the word “shoujo”, but it actually makes a lot of sense. He read a lot of shoujo manga, and it shows in how even in such a grim fantasy, it’s the many layers of the characters and their thoughts and feelings about themselves and each other that form the backbone of the story.

    Since you say you’re enjoying isekai…
    Have you heard of Aura Battler Dunbine? It’s a janky 1980s mecha show for boys where…
    1. the giant robots have insect / fairy wings
    2. The giant robots leave a trail of sparkles
    3. The main characters have been whisked away to a fantasy land (with fairies!)
    I don’t think it’s streaming anywhere unfortunately.
    The 80s animation can be painful to watch. It’s a fun little curiosity though.

    Oh wow, I got bamboozled last week, I thought you would be covering OD! Or maybe it's planned for week 4, as a big finale? 👀
    My overall opinion on LWA is that it was a peek into what OD could've been if it released in the 2010s. I liked the LWA story but pacing was all over the place, world building fell flat several times, and tbh I forgot about the characters since watching. And the lack of budget really showed with the second opening (love the music tho) Akko is just a brown-haired Doremi, change my mind
