  • The Planets, Op. 32, is a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst. With the exception of Earth (the centre of all yet influentially inert astrologically, all the astrological planets known during the work's composition are represented.
From its premiere to the present day, the suite has been enduringly popular, influential, widely performed and frequently recorded. The work was not heard in a complete public performance, however, until some years after it was completed. Although there were four performances between September 1918 and October 1920, they were all either private (the first performance, in London) or incomplete (two others in London and one in Birmingham). The premiere was at the Queen's Hall on 29 September 1918, conducted by Holst's friend Adrian Boult before an invited audience of about 250 people. The first complete public performance was finally given in London by Albert Coates conducting the London Symphony Orchestra on 15 November 1920.
    Instrumentation
The work is scored for an exceptionally large orchestra:
Woodwind: 4 flutes (3rd doubling 1st piccolo; 4th doubling 2nd piccolo and a "bass flute in G", actually an alto flute), 3 oboes (3rd doubling bass oboe), an English horn, 3 clarinets in B-flat, a bass clarinet in B-flat, 3 bassoons and a contrabassoon
Brass: 6 horns in F, 4 trumpets in C, 3 trombones (2 tenor and 1 bass), a "tenor tuba" (euphonium in B-flat) and a bass tuba
Keyboards: a celesta, and an organ
Percussion: 6 timpani (2 players, 3 drums each except in "Uranus" having 4 drums for 1st and 2 drums for 2nd), a bass drum, a snare drum, cymbals, a triangle, a tam-tam, a tambourine, a glockenspiel, a xylophone, and tubular bells
Strings: 2 harps, 1st and 2nd violins, violas, cellos, and double basses
Voices: ("Neptune" only), 2 three-part women's choruses (SSA) located in an adjoining room which is to be screened from the audience
The suite has seven movements, each named after a planet and its corresponding astrological character (see Planets in astrology):
    1.Mars, the Bringer of War
    2.Venus, the Bringer of Peace
    3.Mercury, the Winged Messenger
    4.Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity
5.Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age
    6.Uranus, the Magician
    7.Neptune, the Mystic

Listening to this on vinyl... Dec25 2019.. this year my two best friends died... and this very day the doctor has told me my partner has liver cancer.... I listen to it over and over; the choral arrangement comforts me and helps me believe that there is another place after death, where maybe a soul has a place to go.. and rest.

Deep down on the dark depths of Neptune's world wide ocean, the mystic God dwells around his dark drystal globe. No lights fill the dark, under water cave other than his precious heirloom. He and the strangest and most alien fish of the depths moved around the globe... thinking. "So long have the humans stoped believing in the virtues of the sea... Yet longer still it has been until they uncover the depths of my realm and its darkest secrets." Anxiety filled the waters of the liquid planet. "Will they ever find us again? That remains to be seen..." said the mystic god, as he walked out of the dark underwater cave. The light turned dark as the human shuttle inside the globe took off from the ground and rose towards the vast and infinity of space.

I fondly remember having this playing in my head as I was on watch one night in Spring of 1999 while my unit was in the field at Fort Lewis, Washington. It was quite and still, partially overcast with the Moon illuminating the clouds. It was me, the woods, the night sky, and this song...and it was magic.

Before I ever heard of astrology, when I was a child I loved to listen to echos coming from metal barrels. And static from radios. Colors had a magical fascination for me. Each color had it's on unique fascination for me . And smells like gasoline , even and many others smells could move me. Later I found I had my natal moon exactly trine Neptune. Also mars trine Neptune. And Mercury conjoined Neptune . And my ascendant may be square Neptune which may be on my midheaven . So those who say astrology is just big business have a lot to learn. Astrology is very real!

Long and far have I traveled to meet you; far from the light, outward into the confines of infinity. I come before you in our hour of destitution. ...Present yourself, Mystic Neptune. You must not cower. You must know the warmth of the light; lest you sink into the recesses of abberation. Thus is my gambit to save you, from which there is no return. Hear the plea of man. The first time I heard this as a teenager, I imagined all kinds of scenes as the previous movements unfolded... when this movement played, all I could see was a massive planet out in cold space, with a huge Buddha face completely covering the surface! Karajans interpretation appears to be the longest of the versions on UA-cam, and I think the spacious effect is entirely right for the piece (don't always agree with Karajan's conducting - not that he would care). Lovely, ethereal singing to the careful harp, exquisite stuff

Mr. Tom Sudholt, one of the DJs for the classical music radio station
near me played this after Ms. Katherine Johnson (portrayed by Taraji P.
Henson in the movie "Hidden Figures") passed away back in February.
Mr. Sudholt related how Ms. Johnson made all her calculations for the
Apollo and Space Shuttle launches with just a pencil and paper and how
accurate said calculations turned out to be.
He then went on to tell a story of how, after NASA got, in his words "One of those new fangled computing machines", the people working the machine came up to Mr. John Glenn with the calculations for his first space flight and while listening to them Mr. Glenn calmly said to the guys "No, no, I want to hear what Ms. Johnson has to say.".....from what I remember Ms. Johnson's calculations were not that far off from what the computer had.

Late answer but those are two harps playing chords of harmonics, the same technique is used in parts of Venus, Saturn and Uranus as well

I’m unsure if you are talking about the harps or the flutes, because both are playing by then.

Why do people bang on about Holst's work being plagiarised by the likes of John Williams.
Comparisons are odious, but if you must, then use someone more worthy of Holst like Stravinsky.
